Help disguise this monstrosity!

We recently bought a property with the most god awful spiral staircase in the living room. It was supposed to be ripped out and a normal staircase put in but we've been let down by the person who was supppsed to be doing it and due to new quotes won't be able to afford it 🙄

Please someone help me disguise this monstrosity or help me devise a way that doesn't make me want to cry every time I enter this room.

For clarity the doorway is on the wall directly facing the staircase, but in the right hand corner. The staircase is on the left.

Maybe painting the balustrades a light colour would help it blend in with the walls more. Like this one it is different to yours but blends more with lighter walls

Do nothing until you can afford to replace it. My friend had one in their house and over the years they tried painting it, affixing carpet to the treads, painting the treads, boxing in the staircase (that was the most successful as you could forget it was there) but it was all bollocks til they replaced it.

Cover it in fairy lights and bunting. Paint the steps a rainbow colour. If it looks mad enough you'll forget how ugly it is.

Paint the metalwork and treads a light colour, and fill in the treads so it doesn't have an open tread.

I think a large slice of its' ugliness is that it looks both spidery and insubstantial. This might help alleviate that!

Plants?
I'd paint it white/cream first though, and then I'd get lots of trailing plants to hang on the outside. You could even get fake ones that are quite convincing if, like me, you kill everything you bring inside!

Plasterboard to create a small hallway. Will give you hidden storage too.

If I went with plasterboard I'm worried it would cut off the light, and we'd be able to see all our storage from the top of the stairs wouldn't we? Or am I being thick?
I just can't see myself ever being comfortable with those stairs once our LO learns to walk and I am beyond angry that we can't get rid. Was a deal breaker for me 😢

You could paint them a more contemporary grey?

If you've got a very small child, then definitely fill in the open treads, to stop them disappearing between them halfway up!

I like it ! I would put pots on the railings and put hanging plants on it and big plants under it if that makes sense

Paint them a light colour and string them in soft fairy lights, perhaps some of those funky ones that look like light bulbs or some shaped like stars or flowers. Loads out there.

I like it too, it's the colour and the treads that are the issue. I'd paint both white. And yes filling in the threads will make a huge difference.

You can buy ready made staircases for £200.
Why waste money doing a botch job, save and do it properly

I'd paint it completely white and put fairy lights on it.

You won't see the storage underneath it from the top if the treads have been filled in.
From my limited experience you'd need to create a wooden frame then plaster board around that for the walls. You needn't go to the bother of creating a door frame if you don't want to. I wouldn't think it would take a builder long to create two stud walls.

Well over £2.5k and we've got the boiler to replace already and electrics to sort. Our budget just won't stretch. It was a family member who was meant to be doing the work for us so it was going to be that much. More like £1k.

I'd box it in, that would be quite cheap I'd think.

Could you just render the black bits?

I was imagining a new wall so the stairs are in a newly created hallway.

We wouldn't really have the space to be honest. It would remove a chunk of the living room.
