Help disguise this monstrosity!

We recently bought a property with the most god awful spiral staircase in the living room. It was supposed to be ripped out and a normal staircase put in but we've been let down by the person who was supppsed to be doing it and due to new quotes won't be able to afford it 🙄

Please someone help me disguise this monstrosity or help me devise a way that doesn't make me want to cry every time I enter this room.

For clarity the doorway is on the wall directly facing the staircase, but in the right hand corner. The staircase is on the left.

I'd get a very large pot plant tree to sort of go behind it. An airy ficus.

stabbyjoe · 04/09/2017 19:04

Ouff that is bad. I wouldn't spend money on it, save everything to get it replaced & in the mean time cover it in tinsel.

bigfatdoughnut · 04/09/2017 20:01

Rip it out and get a ladder? 😂

ArcheryAnnie · 04/09/2017 23:59

And a slide!

PovertyPain · 05/09/2017 00:13

Paint it a pale colour and attach muslin or something similar to both sides of the railing, under the hand rail. Make sure it's secure so no one trips on it.

tumpymummy · 05/09/2017 00:30

I think it would look great painted white and plants and fairy lights draped from it. I love a spiral staircase!

JediStoleMyBike · 05/09/2017 10:00

Big and Archery - if I thought I could teach a toddler to use a ladder safely I would be doing that for sure!!

Just had another chap come to quote to put a set of stairs in using the same footprint as what's there. So steps, landing and turn, steps. Will see how that goes!

Once the treads are filled in it will be lots better. The treads need to be paler wood, more the colour of the floor and if you can paint the black to white it'll make a real difference. Some storage underneath that is pretty but functional. I wouldn't try to disguise it but just blend it in a little

JediStoleMyBike · 18/09/2017 18:06

Update! We've started to work on the stairs. The treads as being filled in and I'm painting them. They are looking better already 🙂

My friend bought s staircase off eBay - dirt cheap!

JediStoleMyBike · 18/09/2017 18:20

Problem is fitting it, and there's not enough space to fit it in without cutting a chunk of ceiling as it's low. It was easier to work with what we have, given we'd have to have a set of stairs that wound up anyway but with sharper turns in wood so there was no real point anymore. Hopefully by the end it'll fit in the room, with lights and stuff.

Do post pics as it's being done, OP! (And it already looks a bit better on the white-painted side.)

Orchardgreen · 20/09/2017 23:27

I'd sell a kidney to get it replaced

Justgivemesomepeace · 20/09/2017 23:33

Ooh keep the pics coming. I've something very similar going to my daughter loft bedroom. I hate it and it puts the fear of god in me when little DS tries to go up. I need to see how you fill these treads in. I think I'll paint mine white too now I've seen yours!

Solo · 20/09/2017 23:49

I had a boyfriend once who had a very similar one bed house in Coventry with the same spiral staircase; it moved as you went up and down it! I'm sure his was in cream but, it was a very long time ago now!

FanDabbyFloozy · 22/09/2017 12:27

The white version looks much better!

Care to share a pic of the finished product?

JediStoleMyBike · 24/09/2017 15:03

Here is just after the treads were filled. Just getting a picture of it now as we've done more work! Incoming shortly 🙂

Treads filled in. Underside painted, railings painted. Just waiting for carpets now that'll cover all the stairs. Getting there!

Wow! It looks much better already.

Solo · 24/09/2017 17:52

That's lovely! Well done!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 24/09/2017 20:34

That looks much better. It now looks like a proper staircase rather than a brooding spider!

Any ideas to beautify the handrails? They do look like a string of paper clips.
Could you do something with that tubular foam pipe cladding/ insulation?

Fernanie · 24/09/2017 20:38

I quite liked it in the original post, but it's gorgeous now you've worked on it! Well done, Jedi. Look forward to the finished pics!

Whinesalot · 24/09/2017 21:58

It's amazing how much different to the original it is.

LavenderDoll · 24/09/2017 22:01

Looks great. Totally different from the original pics.

ArcheryAnnie · 25/09/2017 08:34

It looks like a staircase now, rather than a tangly metal thing. Well done!
