What is it with tiny beds in holiday cottages

When there’s clearly plenty of space in the room? Trying to book a UK break in October. We would like a super king, but at the very least need a king. But cottage after cottage is just double beds. Why? And you can’t even easily search for it, although I know I’m not the only one wanting a decent nights sleep.

@JDM625 , A single is the same size at 2 super kings together, so 90cm or 3ft wide each for each person, whereas a double only offers each person 67.5cm or 2ft 3inches!

You mean a super king-size is the same size as 2 singles.

Clearly, as they are profit-making businesses, they provide the cheapest option to save money on buying and equipping the bed, to save time on changing and money on laundering.

2 singles are the same width are a super king.

@NormaSears Yes, I meant 2 singles. I don't know any bed the size of 2 super kings, only an emperor size maybe?

I’m always surprised how many people have kingsize beds. We have a double at home (small room), and it’s against a wall as no other options. I think it’s all a question of what you’re used to - but as two average sized, normal weight adults, we find it absolutely fine.

I certainly don’t care about the size of holiday cottage beds. As long as the bedding is clean and the mattress is firm, I’m happy.

Agree, I'm shocked that so many people appear to be shocked that two adults sleep in a double.

@JDM625 , I'd need a bigger house. Smile

Google tells me a king / super king is only 3” longer than a double, that’ll be why I never noticed.

Yes but you understand that they cost more surely ? When most guests don’t need it, they are unlikely to be standard Premier Inn has kingsize as standard so you’d better check in there in future! 😂

Well, there are plenty of s/c options I always found. So some landlords do listen to feedback or are just happy to provide comfort when space makes it possible.

As DH and I sleep in separate rooms at home I also don't mind doing this on holiday if I can't find a king size.

NormaSears · 24/08/2025 16:38

@ExcellentDesign , You'd notice if you were over 6' 2".

Average height for men in the UK is 5'10", so the length of beds seems short.

It's the same with single beds. I remember staying in a caravan quite a few years ago and the size of the single beds was ridiculous! I didn't actually measure them,but I swear they were only about 2 feet wide.
