What is it with tiny beds in holiday cottages

When there’s clearly plenty of space in the room? Trying to book a UK break in October. We would like a super king, but at the very least need a king. But cottage after cottage is just double beds. Why? And you can’t even easily search for it, although I know I’m not the only one wanting a decent nights sleep.

Although most people's preference seems to be King size or superking, I dont think that automatically means a double bed is "tiny".
It's a standard size - albeit potentially not suitable for people who are much taller than average.
DD had a small double (4ft) in her uni halls. That was a pain, especially to get bedding for, because it wasn't really a regular size so i could understand if people described that as tiny

My oh and I are both pleasantly plump and manage perfectly well in a double on holiday.

Same here, we both lie on our sides and are fine in a standard double it doesn't make us get shoved into one another. In a superking he's too far away to poke when he starts snoring.

NormaSears · 23/08/2025 18:28

I agree that a double bed isn't tiny. Width-wise it is ample for 2, as long as they aren't bed-hoggers.

CheeseWisely · 23/08/2025 19:51

@Fizbosshoes I had a small double for a while when I was single (and actually still for a while after DH moved in with me) and just used a double duvet on it, with a double flat sheet.

Lorrymum · 23/08/2025 20:07

I'm intrigued as to why double beds are now thought to be only suitable for one person. So what is the point of single beds?

I assume its because people are generally taller and larger than say our grandparents generation were due to better knowledge and availability of food, healthcare, different jobs etc.

I think of singles as being for children, but per person, a single provides more space than 2 adults in a double!

A single is the same size at 2 super kings together, so 90cm or 3ft wide each for each person, whereas a double only offers each person 67.5cm or 2ft 3inches!

For children? Would feel really cramped for me alone.

Of all my single friends and family members, not one of them has a single bed. Why would you not want space to stretch out and be comfortable?

WhyAmISoReal · 23/08/2025 21:01

Lots people on this thread failing to understand that bmi/ weight/ being 'plump' doesn't affect your height. King-sized beds are longer than doubles.

DH is tall and skinny and would even prefer a longer than king/superking mattress if one existed.

I believe for some types of beds you can get 'extender blocks' that go at the head end under the pillow!

WellyBellyBoo · 23/08/2025 21:06

Double bed doesn't bother me (so long as not against the wall). I always look at the sofas. No proper, comfy sofas and it's off the list. Ditto if someone would have to sit in the dud seat in the middle of a three seater.

Also lots pf people failing to understand that for plenty of people a standard double is fine and maybe that's why so many holiday homes have them. I now get that it's annoying for tall people. But I never knew that kingsize were longer as well as wider, so maybe a lot of average height holiday home owners simply haven't realised either.

Flossflower · 24/08/2025 00:00

I think the message is slowly filtering through. We usually book at least a 2 bedroomed place for just the 2 of us. It gives us sleeping options. One cottage was advertised as having double beds but it meant we could sleep separately and my husband could sleep diagonally. When we got there, the owner let us in and showed us round. There was a king size bed. She said she had got it because all her reviews were very good apart from saying it only had double beds. I told her she should change her description of her property quickly as more people would be inclined to book.

YANBU! I have taken to bringing an extra mattress to go on the floor, a double is suitable for one person only. I have no idea how adults sleep every night sharing a double!

Why not book somewhere with an extra bedroom instead?

Yes, it's one of those things that is so blindingly obvious to some people tjat a double is small that they are baffled by anyone not getting it and vice versa. I didn't realise king size were longer too and have never found a normal double to be in any way small.

So if I had ever owned a holiday let it wouldn't have crossed my mind to put in a king-size bed because in my experience a king-size is an extra big, out of the ordinary bed that I wouldn't be expecting.

I was talking about comments saying "I'm overweight and a double is fine" as if width of person is the only factor.

What comments did you mean where people didn't understand that average-sized people are ok in an average-sized bed?

Quite the drama about my husbands bent knees since I’ve been gone, to clarify he sleeps on his side, so in something of a fetal position. I naturally do the same, despite being shorter than the bed. Given that an apparent 60% of people sleep on their side I’m stunned that anyone actually imagined he was sleeping on his back or front with his legs bent up??! It’s given me a laugh anyway Grin

No I didnt think that, I assumed he was on his side.

Over the night, people go in all sorts of positions, only 'righting' themselves when they briefly wake up even if they dont remember that in the morning. So although thats his chosen position the reality is the body needs to stretch out during the night, its a natural thing. Its really bad to sleep sort of hunched up for a solid number of hours.

Because it’s cheaper to buy obviously!

landlordhell · 24/08/2025 09:19

DH is 6ft 4 and he doesn’t moan. He bends his knees!

bumbaloo · 23/08/2025 08:05

Well yes you are happy because you have a small bed at home so it’s no sacrifice!

doubles are really only suitable for one person unless you literally have no choice. I. The summer I couldn’t bear being that close to someone else. Also I move around a lot on my sleep and would disturb my dh too much. He’s like a furnace. Nope. Would never work for me.

plus anyone over 6ft tall struggles in a double as they are only 190cm long so they’d have to be right up against the headboard or gave feel dangling.

anyone over 6’3 which is common these days would be dangling off the end

@WhyAmISoReal You asked for an example of someone not understanding that average sized people are fine in an average sized bed. This poster thinks doubles are only suitable for one person, regardless of their size.

was buying bedding for DS for uni yesterday. Dunelm have lots of fitted sheets for small doubles thankfully.

The thread title for a start. For average sized people a standard double is not tiny. It might feel that way if you are used to king or superking or you sleep
like a starfish but it is big enough for regular side, back or front sleeping.

YABU. Nobody needs a super king. Absolutely nothing wrong with a double. If you are so extremely obese just have separate beds.
I am morbidly obese and sleep in a double with my partner every night.

Fine if you just want one in your own home, but to expect others to provide one us a bit ridiculous.

Well, why should I sleep less comfortable then at home? I have a king at home and DH and I both sleep spread out.
We were in a hotel recently for one night who only had a double and the night was awful, we both woke each other up all the time.

@Lorrymum too narrow. I had one on a single holiday two years ago and always bumped against the wall or woke up sleeping at the edge.

Give me a king and I am happy, a super king and I really love the property.

Yes but you understand that they cost more surely ? When most guests don’t need it, they are unlikely to be standard Premier Inn has kingsize as standard so you’d better check in there in future! 😂
