What is it with tiny beds in holiday cottages

When there’s clearly plenty of space in the room? Trying to book a UK break in October. We would like a super king, but at the very least need a king. But cottage after cottage is just double beds. Why? And you can’t even easily search for it, although I know I’m not the only one wanting a decent nights sleep.

We get a 2 bedroom cottage and have a room each. I search for 3 adults. However lots of the 2nd bedrooms have bunk beds and it's hard to tell if they are long enough for an adult!

Favouritefruits · 19/08/2025 19:29

I refuse to book anywhere with a double bed, we’ve even booked a lodge with an extra bedroom at centre Parcs and forest holidays!

Wrt choosing holiday home based on bed size - we have so many other considerations on a sliding scale that if we added bed size to the list we'd never find anywhere 🤣

Bed size is a red line for me. If I can’t have a king or better, I won’t book. I’d rather not go than spend a week without proper sleep 🛌 .

Omg I thought we must be the only ones as it's not a common search filter!

Even then, I swear the ones who say King are actually doubles.

Both DH and I are stretch out sleepers. Never looked back since getting our super king and I hate when we have to stay somewhere without and we aren't even that big!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/08/2025 20:30

Yep!

DH 6’2”
DS 6’3” and still growing
DD and I both 5’8”.

We like big beds!!!

DiordreBarlow · 19/08/2025 20:51

....and you cannot lie.

ExcellentDesign · 19/08/2025 20:51

It would never occur to me to search on bed size, we are both side sleepers and fairly short so it doesn't matter at all, in fact I feel a bit lost in a superking (we have a king at home).

100% agree.

We stayed in a lovely cottage a few years ago, the main bedroom was massive but it only had a double. It's pissed me off ever since, as it was perfect otherwise and we'd have gone back if it had a bigger bed.

Parking is our other non-negotiable. Bed size #1 and parking #2. Actual location probably #3 😅

Yanbu

SumUp · 19/08/2025 21:06

In my opinion it depends on who you share with, your respective sizes and if either of you flail around or starfish in the night 😂

Provided the bed is long enough for me to straighten my legs, I’m good. A comfortable single bed with no one but me in it is bliss 🥰

DappledThings · 19/08/2025 21:10

Never found it an issue and I don't think if I was ever in the position of owning a holiday let I'd have considered buying a bigger than usual bed for it.

Have occasionally had bigger than a normal double hed in hotels, never at home. It's nice I guess, a bit different to being at home but not a particular selling point.

SunnyPrague · 19/08/2025 21:13

YANBU.

I won’t book cottages/ villas with standard doubles. Sleep is really important - especially so when you’re away from home.

BoilingHotand50something · 19/08/2025 21:13

I think what makes it worse is that some say double room to distinguish it from twin room and sometimes the bed is larger than a standard double but you cannot know for sure so still don’t book.

Ny bug bear is bunks. My kids have hated bunks for years and there is usually room for twin beds anyway.

Hedonism · 19/08/2025 21:26

I'm not going on holiday somewhere that is less comfortable than my own home (which has a king size bed). See also: camping.

Laiste · 19/08/2025 21:29

Would be interesting to start a thread asking about the order of non negotiables for holiday rental ! I might do it ...

CanOfMangoTango · 19/08/2025 21:32

Agree

I have a super king at home and will only book a minimum of a king.

I'm not going on holiday to have a worse bed than at home.

I can't sleep in a double with DH, we have tried on many occasions but now we're used to a big bed it is so uncomfortable.

So many have those cute metal frames and footboards as well which are awful for tall people. At least on a divan you can hang your feet out the end.

1/3 of the holiday will be spent sleeping, so for us, bed size is very important!

Baninarama · 19/08/2025 21:37

Urgh, this is reminding me of a gite we rented with friends a few years ago. All the beds were doubles apart from one, which had a ceiling entirely made up of glass and no curtains (you couldn't see that in the pictures online). So DH and I shared a double. It was hotter than all hell despite the aircon as we were pressed together, and opening a window was a no as I get devoured by mosquitoes. On the third night I went downstairs and slept on the kitchen floor.

mamagogo1 · 19/08/2025 21:39

Really? I have no issues with a standard double and dh is 6’1, both of us are overweight. I’m not that keen on super kings, I prefer to be snuggled up.

Is king size "bigger than usual" these days? Most of my family & friends have king size at least. I'm not so sure a double is the norm anymore.

lololola1987 · 19/08/2025 21:44

We were hoodwinked recently.
My far from huge DS and I had to sleep on tiny camp beds. Not Indicated in description at all. We had bruises on our hips.

QuietLifeNoDrama · 19/08/2025 21:58

Yanbu. Unless the property can’t fit one in there’s no need to be cheap and just put a double bed in. These places charge £££ per week. My other bugbear are the places that say ‘sleeps 8’ yet there’s only 4 dining chairs and one sofa.

I have absolutely no idea what size bed any of my friends and family have, it's not something that ever comes up in conversation and I don't go in their bedrooms.

Me either. But a double is the basic standard. Usually referred to as a "standard double". So I so assume it is still the most common size and anything bigger is extra big.

Maybe more people have king-size than standard these days. I never have, nor have I ever noticed one in any of the family or friends' houses I've ever stayed in.

soupyspoon · 19/08/2025 22:12

I dont know anyone with a standard double to be fair

Theres 2 double sizes isnt there? the 4 foot and 4 foot 6.

And a kingsize is 5 foot?
