We're booked to fly there next weekend.

OP posts:

It's awful to watch, feel so sorry for the people who live there.

Holidays don't seem very important when we're watching people's homes burn.

Climate change is getting pretty bloody unignorable suddenly.

TizerorFizz · 23/07/2023 22:26

It’s not surprising. What does your insurance say regarding not being able to access accommodation. Fires are in the north. Are you staying there?

EVHead · 23/07/2023 22:27

DD is there now. Due to come home tomorrow. I don’t think I’m going to sleep tonight.

All of this. Mass migration is a reality, how the world will cope I’ve no idea.

Viviennemary · 23/07/2023 22:35

I just heard on the news that authorities have called for evacuations on Corfu. It also said that Corfu wasnt yet on the list that the foreign office has advised people not to travel to but this is expected to change very soon. It's not great for holdaymakers but a total tragedy for local people losing their homes and possessions.

SweetSakura · 23/07/2023 22:36

Heartbreaking for the people whose homes and lives are on those Islands. At least we can choose whether or not to go on holiday. For them it is devastating.

I hope, I really hope, we'll start to heed these signs of things to come and start to turn things round

Isn’t it arson?

calmcoco · 23/07/2023 22:44

Tippexy · 23/07/2023 22:38

Isn’t it arson?

The conditions in Europe currently are caused by climate change.

Fires start for all sorts of reasons - including arson - but climate change is making fires much more common and much less controllable.

EmmaEmerald · 23/07/2023 22:45

Tippexy · 23/07/2023 22:38

Isn’t it arson?

Whatever it is, it isn't helped by disposable barbecues etc.

poor everyone involved, it's beyond nightmarish.

SweetSakura · 23/07/2023 22:45

Tippexy · 23/07/2023 22:38

Isn’t it arson?

The vegetation is tinder dry due to the high temperatures caused by climate change and these temperatures are so high that the vegetation can just ignite without human intervention (beyond all that human behaviour that caused the climate change of course)

JustMint · 23/07/2023 23:25

I mean you should probably cancel and take pressure of what is going to maybe be limited infrastructure.

Rhodes fires have been caused by arson and that has been confirmed.

Heatwave is likely due to climate change but it’s complex and will take time to analyse.

JustMint · 23/07/2023 23:25

@SweetSakura it’s normally tinder dry in the med in summer though…

StellaJohanna · 23/07/2023 23:27

Tippexy · 23/07/2023 22:38

Isn’t it arson?

My relative works for the police in Rhodes and he told me yesterday they believe a lot of it is arson and copycat will now follow.

This comment is an example of climate change denial.

Things have changed, are changing as a result of climate change. One consequence is more fires, and worse fires, some spontaneous and some as a result of carelessness or deliberate actions.

The temperatures are breaking records constantly though, this is not normal. Look at the globe on the whole.

JustMint · 23/07/2023 23:51

It’s not climate change denial - it’s saying that in this month those regions are usually tinder dry.

They are. That is different to saying no records have been broken.

Arson on tinder dry land is a recipe for wildfires.

CandyLeBonBon · 24/07/2023 00:30

I've just spoken to the owners of the apartments we're staying at and they're very clear it's fine. Some fires in the mountains. Apparently very common at this time of year.

Went to Granada in May last year and heard similar stories.

We're flying in 2 days and will still be travelling.

SweetSakura · 24/07/2023 00:40

There is absolutely nothing normal about the conditions in southern Europe right now.

Exactly. We have family in Greece. They are very clear this isn't normal. That this is climate change. The worst thing,.they live very low impact lives,

Am I reading the above right? It's set to be up by a "massive" 0.38°c?? That's not exactly massive is it?! Talk about scaremongering

Then you don't understand climate science.

You either don't understand the science, or you're deliberately minimising, or you've swallowed a climate conspiracy theory.

It's not scaremongering.

Hmm It is hotter and drier.

Because the climate is changing.

That is why there are worse fires than there used to be.
