We're booked to fly there next weekend.

@Keykaty that option would get my vote too. Would definitely make it easier taking holidays outside of high Summer.

This comment is an example of climate change denial.

Things have changed, are changing as a result of climate change. One consequence is more fires, and worse fires, some spontaneous and some as a result of carelessness or deliberate actions.

Did you type that with a straight face? 😂

Yes. 'climate change' makes people into arsonists...

Charlotteowensdodgydad · 25/07/2023 08:22

@Largeslice what are you inferring then ? That we can only discuss things in isolation ? Are you suggesting everything is ticketyboo and these record breaking temperatures in southern Europe have no significance ?
Greece might have wild fires every year but the fact that tourists are being evacuated for the first time in large numbers is pretty newsworthy.

Charlotteowensdodgydad · 25/07/2023 08:25

@Largeslice maybe not climate change denier but definitely climate change minimiser. For god knows what reason who knows.

If I wanted to start a fire now, it would go nowhere, ground is wet and trees/grass damp too.
There are always going to be arsonists and criminals. These arsonists are not caused by climate change, but it's very easy to cause a lot of damage if tinder is dry and there is potential for fire to spread.
Why do so many people here want to minimise climate change? I get that people don't want threads derailed by it but a bit of research would show it to be a real thing.
Whether you want to make any personal changes because of it is a different issues, but climate change is real.

This is what I can't understand. I can only assume it's just too scary to contemplate.

Everyone I know with a science background/anyone remotely intelligent I know tbh knows that it is real and happening. The science has been solid on this for decades now.

Even if people don't feel able to make changes themselves they could still support and endorse the efforts of others.

Keykaty · 25/07/2023 13:44

I think most people do fear climate change but feel powerless to influence or change much themselves.

People need direction in circumstances such as this, but do NOT need lecturing or hectoring. Not much influencing coming from those who need to influence us really. If that is because Governments know that they will lose elections if they get tough well, that says an awful lot about people's priorities. And of course you have those "lecturing" us doing the exact opposite to what they think "we" should be doing.
