Shit, wild fires now on Corfu

We're booked to fly there next weekend.

Back to Corfu, are fires spreading rapidly or controlled? And is it likely to be put on don’t travel list?

I'd just assume holidays are off

It's awful to watch, feel so sorry for the people who live there.

Holidays don't seem very important when we're watching people's homes burn.

Climate change is getting pretty bloody unignorable suddenly.

Ehh, I thought it had been confirmed as arson?

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 24/07/2023 06:42

It's astonishing to see how many people are in denial about climate change.

Do people not understand that, regardless of how the fires may have started, the climate conditions have a huge impact on how the fire spreads and the extent to which it can be controlled.

I guess some people just don't want to know.

toomanyleggings · 24/07/2023 07:01

My dad is a corfiat. He said it’s no hotter than normal this time of year.

Tulips2507 · 24/07/2023 07:15

Greece is on fire yet people still don't think climate change isnt a problem. Staggering. How much worse will it have to get before people realise what's happening?
It doesn't matter what someone's dad said, or a local waiter said. Look at what every scientist has been saying for years, what the data is showing.

Tulips2507 · 24/07/2023 07:16

*is a problem! Sorry that first sentence didn't make sense

bellac11 · 24/07/2023 07:19

Tippexy · 23/07/2023 22:38

Isn’t it arson?

It usually is, even in this country

I feel a bit uncomfortable reading about people's holiday experiences when actually these are also residential areas and peoples lives and homes/wildlife.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 24/07/2023 07:40

I got back from Corfu yesterday. It was certainly hotter than I've ever known it. My friends are still there as they aren't due to fly home until late tonight.

They were evacuated last night but couldn't find any alternative accommodation. A kind hotel owner opened his lobby to evacuees so they spent the night there but didn't get much sleep. He's just given them breakfast too. They are really touched by the kindness being shown.

BroomHandledMouser · 24/07/2023 07:41

Foreign minister on BBC now - he’s saying that there was ‘movement’ in Corfu but these people have now been sent back. He’s saying the situation is under control

My dad is a corfiat. He said it’s no hotter than normal this time of year.

His thermometer is perhaps not working as accurately as the scientists' thermometers...

As the saying goes, there's none so blind as they who will not see.

The vegetation is tinder dry due to the high temperatures caused by climate change and these temperatures are so high that the vegetation can just ignite without human intervention (beyond all that human behaviour that caused the climate change of course)

how does dry grass catch fire by itself?

calmcoco · 24/07/2023 07:52

JasonOsCubanHeels · 24/07/2023 07:49

The sun causes it to catch fire, so it is not 'by itself' but spontaneous combustion of dry matter is a risk at times of high temperature and drought.

User16534 · 24/07/2023 07:56

All threads keep being derailed by climate change posters

DatumTarum · 24/07/2023 07:59

Climate change plus arson equals this.

Anyway, I think they've got in under control

TodayInahurry · 24/07/2023 08:01

We went there maybe 20 years ago and there was a massive fire on the mountain behind where we we staying. Nothing new, as people have said cigarette, disposable BBQs etc

calmcoco · 24/07/2023 08:05

The issue is that lives are being derailed by climate change, not just threads. It is weird to want to discuss the situation in Europe but not include climate as a factor.

You can't demand people to leave climate change aside when it's part of the picture.

Its ostrich behaviour.

What was that film recently that highlighted it so well?

A broken piece of glass can set off a fire.

How is it derailing?

We might not like it, but climate change is a factor here. It is real. We can't keep pretending it isn't.

I'm no eco warrior, but I can't ignore the facts when they're staring us in the face.

Burying our heads in the sand about it is not going to make the problem go away.

barofsoap · 24/07/2023 08:13

Climates change. Sometimes they get hotter and sometimes they get cooler.

Do you have a source for the arson allegation?

Weird how this latest sudden rise in temperatures can be carefully plotted right back to when we started burning fossil fuels eh

YukoandHiro · 24/07/2023 08:15

"Climate change is getting pretty bloody unignorable suddenly."

And yet those that have the power to tackle it go on ignoring.

And voters chose to oppose ULEZ.

So here we are. Sorry your holidays are all ruined folks.
