Where’s overrated, and why? Looking at making a 2023 travel itinerary and curious.

I wasn’t fond on Rome.

I would love to try Amsterdam but worried about safety: wouldn’t be interested in any of the ‘popular’ activities that folk do there, or the red light district. I more like the look of the food, culture, boat trips and museums.

Venice was disappointing - when we visited a lot of the buildings were being renovated so were behind tarpaulins. St Mark's Square is - a square. I'm not a fan of religious architecture so the basilica was wasted on me. The campanile is a rebuild from 1912. We lived in the Netherlands so canals were nothing new.

Berlinlover · 05/12/2022 21:31

Paris is just awful.

Cuckfancer · 05/12/2022 21:34

It's really interesting how people's tastes vary! I love Barcelona, Paris and Rome but didn't like NY, it might be because I went there at the tail end of a relationship tho.
Liked but slightly bored by Sunday: Amsterdam, Budapest, Ghent
Hated: Brussels (bored by Friday night) Tangiers (rats and cats)

Teakind · 05/12/2022 21:35

Hated Barcelona as I felt on edge the whole time.

I love Amsterdam and Paris!

I don't understand how people don't like Rome but it does seem a bit marmite.

Dublin

Crikeyalmighty · 05/12/2022 21:36

Ones I love

Copenhagen(lived there for 20 months-) better I think as a resident than a visitor as eating and drinking out are pretty expensive but other things as a resident suprisingly reasonable. Great food, shopping centres, riverside terraces , beaches and family sports and activities

Stockholm - similar situation to Copenhagen - except you can get Uber!

Utrecht- prefer to Amsterdam but only 18 minutes away- lively and attractive without the seedy aspects

Córdoba/Malaga/Seville - lovely med vibes - very attractive places

Palma- Majorca- to me a much nicer more compact Barcelona

Krakow - tons of history, attractive and cheap

Istanbul- loved this- a real east meets west experience and great food- you do have to watch being ripped off though

Nuremberg - my favourite of the German cities-

Rome- I loved Rome to look at and the food - again though can be a rip off place

Bruges- always lovely if a bit chocolate box chintzy

Youcanlaugh · 05/12/2022 21:36

Loved Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Barcelona, Prague, New York, San Diego, Rome and Milan.

Didn’t like Munich (not a v touristy place anyway I guess), San Francisco okay but didn't feel safe and LA the same if not worse. So much homelessness and drugs everywhere.

Itsoktogiveup · 05/12/2022 21:37

Paris was disappointing, as was New York. Much preferred South of France, and Washington

Isleoftights · 05/12/2022 21:37

Preston was ok, the bus station is Grade 2 listed, and no-one tried to rob me.

N4ish · 05/12/2022 21:38

Toronto was biggest let down - felt like there was nothing much to see, food options were dull and loads of homeless/drug users wandering about.

Also wouldn’t bother going back to Dublin, Barcelona or Brussels.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 05/12/2022 21:38

I hated Paris but ended up there in June this year for an event with dh. We stayed near liberty square and absolutely adored it. It truly surprised me.

3peassuit · 05/12/2022 21:39

Marrakesh. I thought I’d love it but it wasn’t a great place for a woman traveller.

🤣.

AntiqueCestChic · 05/12/2022 21:40

Copenhagen. Dull.

Hohofortherobbers · 05/12/2022 21:40

Ditto Cairo, very intimidating as a young woman. Karakow is a total gem and well worth a visit, very quaint with lots of history and great food. I enjoyed Rome, but we stayed outside the centre in Trastevere which had a great evening vibe which made it for me. I like Barcelona but its too busy with tourists to really enjoy. Ho chi Minh was fascinating for history and food too.

FlissyPaps · 05/12/2022 21:40

Also, London😂

I’m northern, so absolutely hate all the rushing around and running Londoners seem to do, especially on the tube. I don’t get the wow factor from any of the landmarks, and most places bar Westminster, Southbank and Kinghtsbridge are pure shitholes.

AntiqueCestChic · 05/12/2022 21:41

Oh and Toronto- for the same reasons as pp said.

JamesLincs · 05/12/2022 21:41

Dublin..

Looks like any rundown small British city.. think Stoke on Trent

12 euro for a pint of Guinness as well

QforCucumber · 05/12/2022 21:41

Hated paris,

absolutely loved Amsterdam

pinkhousesarebest · 05/12/2022 21:41

Weived in Paris for four years pre dc and were glad to leave. It took me 15 years to go back but we were unambitious didn't venture too far from the 6th and had a lovely time.
Can't stand Dublin and my dc are at uni there.
Loved Venice, Porto, New York.
Madrid made us throw the head up and leave the UK forever ( though not to Madrid yet). We went in February and it was such an antidote

Els1e · 05/12/2022 21:42

Dublin. Lovely in itself. But probably not worth the cost

TheGander · 05/12/2022 21:42

Dubrovnik. Just so crowded, like some kind of human sheep dip with overpriced cafes and nowhere to just sit and relax without having to open your wallet. Give me a place like Bucharest anyday ( not picturesque, not on the cruise ship itinerary but full of interest if you scratch a bit below the surface).

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 05/12/2022 21:42

Loved:- Copenhagen, Prague, New York, La Rochelle, Barcelona, Lisbon
Ok: Paris, Florence, Verona, Venice

Hated: Bordeaux

Happylittlethoughts · 05/12/2022 21:42

New York ... just couldn't catch the vibe at all... was dull
