Which city break did you NOT enjoy?

Where’s overrated, and why? Looking at making a 2023 travel itinerary and curious.

I wasn’t fond on Rome.

I would love to try Amsterdam but worried about safety: wouldn’t be interested in any of the ‘popular’ activities that folk do there, or the red light district. I more like the look of the food, culture, boat trips and museums.

Dublin definitely. I feel robbed at every turn and the weather is shit.

slowquickstep · 05/12/2022 21:44

Amsterdam, Glasgow and Gibraltar (I know it's not a city but it is great for a weekend as you get to see all of it) are my top 3 and will always return to them. I will never visit Paris, Dublin, NY and Rome again.

Copenhagen. Dull.

You obviously didn’t visit when the Sex Museum was open then - now closed! Think it was on Straget. Grin

WhoopItUp · 05/12/2022 21:44

Wasn’t fussed on:
Dublin
Warsaw
New York

Loved:
Stockholm
Vienna
Prague
Vancouver
Toronto
Rome
Venice
Florence
Paris
Boston

Cakemonger · 05/12/2022 21:45

New York - couldn't see what the fuss was about.

Lisbon - didn't hate it but I wouldn't go back. Just a bit shabby and run down and lacked any feeling of magic.

I LOVE Paris.

Peakypolly · 05/12/2022 21:45

To me, it felt like Birmingham in January.
Have you been to Birmingham in January? The theatres and music venues are buzzing (The 1975, Lewis Capaldi, Guz Khan), the Botanical Gardens have events and the restaurants still have more Michelin stars than any city in the UK outside London (although admittedly 4 less than Amsterdam). Also the chance of precipitation is lower in Birmingham than Amsterdam in January (and every month except April in fact).
I agree with others that a city break in Paris can be difficult to get spot on.
My favourite city breaks have been Boston, MA and Vienna.

C1N1C · 05/12/2022 21:48

Echoing the above it seems.

Hated Naples but actually had some redeeming catacombs.

Quite liked Vienna (but we geocache and that jad a lot of fun ones)

France, yep, dirty, smelly, eugh!

Vancouver had some nice areas and some really druggy areas... if you avoid them it's OK.

wishingchair1 · 05/12/2022 21:49

Dublin seemed a tad underwhelming. Had a good time but didn't hit the spot. Loved Berlin, Prague. Barcelona was fab but think its more stag nights now. Amsterdam was good.

JacquelinePot · 05/12/2022 21:49

Hated Brussels and felt quite unsafe at times, couldn't wait to get home. That trip was salvaged by a daytrip to Bruges which we both loved.

Didn't like Warsaw, partner hated it.

Both disliked Paris but the weather was bad, I was ill and strikes meant the one thing I really wanted to do was closed.

Not keen on Dublin, found it to be meh.

Liked Amsterdam, Florence (loved the daytrip to San Giminiano), Berlin and Cannes.

Loved Bruges, Budapest, Edinburgh.

Gemütlich81 · 05/12/2022 21:49

I thought I was the only person not to like Paris! So many people on here mentioning Paris.

Love Madrid, Tallin, Wroclav and Gdańsk.

BeethovenNinth · 05/12/2022 21:49

Meh- Paris. Barcelona. Dublin (really disliked, sorry). Kuala Lumpur.

Love - London, New York (haven’t been for years), Montreal, Madrid,

like - Boston. Lisbon. Washington. Singapore.

I used to live in edinburgh and expect everyone to love it so am surprised when it’s hated but it is badly run now

Elphame · 05/12/2022 21:50

San Francisco - really don't get the appeal at all.

Prague - Not suitable for vegetarians!

Cattenberg · 05/12/2022 21:50

I didn’t enjoy Prague that much. It’s beautiful, but people kept trying to rip me off, I saw a bloke chasing a pickpocket who’d just robbed him, I saw a bloke with a knife get on our bus and argue with the bus driver… I had a good time in Ceske Budejovice and Cesky Krumlov though.

I also didn’t enjoy Reykjavik as much as I thought I would. Perhaps it was because it was a rainy day in March, but seemed small and fairly dull. The shops are great if you have plenty of money and are after wooden handicrafts, sheepskin rugs, jewellery and woolly jumpers. But I loved the scenery outside Reykjavik. It’s stunning.

kateandme · 05/12/2022 21:51

I suggest any of Norway.i no your asking for not.but I can honestly say there is not one in Norway I didn't enjoy.and they are all so different.oslo is great but then go to the outer parts and it's brilliant.beautiful insummer and great winter.

RTHJ14 · 05/12/2022 21:52

I adore San Francisco too! Seriously thought about living there when the opportunity arose xx

NibbledSwitch · 05/12/2022 21:53

Las Vegas - tacky low-brow unsafe expensive overly hot dump

MrsMariaReynolds · 05/12/2022 21:54

Didn't particularly care for Bruges (Disneyfied "Europe" and way too touristy), Bergen, Norway (gorgeous but never stops raining) Toronto (just "meh"), Pittsburgh, Austin TX, or Edinburgh (DH was mugged on the Royal Mile).

My absolute faves have been Rome, Athens and Valencia.

TiredButAlive · 05/12/2022 21:55

San Francisco. Awful place. Litter everywhere. So many homeless and begging ... there didn't seem to be a lot happening to help them. Queues for everything and the place was cold and foggy in summer (admittedly I should have researched this). I was there with the kids and the atmosphere was very intimidating and unsafe, even for the US (we lived there at the time).

JamesLincs · 05/12/2022 21:55

Bangkok - I lived there for a year.. Love the humid warm weather, cheap street food everywhere you go.. Tons of malls, amazing public transport, subway, sky train, cheap taxis everywhere.. Beautiful tropical beaches with turquoise water a few hours away. Nightlife awesome

Los Angeles - Gigantic if you consider LA as the metro area / county. I have a thing for vising movie filming locations of LA is a must for this. Malibu beach, hiking in the Hollywood hills or visiting some dodgy South Central neighbourhood.

Moscow - Fascinating Russian and Soviet history all around, the metro stations are like museums all in themselves and very cheap to travel on. Lots of Georgian and Uzbek restaurants around. Modern and clean and I felt very safe walking around at night.

Cakecakecheese · 05/12/2022 21:55

Didn't like Paris or Milan.

SwedishEdith · 05/12/2022 21:56

The only way you'll find out if you like a place is to go yourself. So many places people say they hate, are just as loved by someone else. And so much depends on what you're interested in, the time of year you go, who you go with etc.

inthedeepshade · 05/12/2022 21:57

Valencia. Full of cockroaches, food was meh, not really enough to do to fill a long weekend.

gaf · 05/12/2022 21:58

Dublin. Expensive and nothing really there apart from the Guinness factory.

FleasNavidad · 05/12/2022 21:59

"Venice particularly (beautiful but a bit dull and it absolutely stinks)."

No smell at all this summer. But people who visited around 30 years ago said the same

EastLondonObserver · 05/12/2022 22:00

Mydogatemypurse · 05/12/2022 20:20
