Which city break did you NOT enjoy?

Where’s overrated, and why? Looking at making a 2023 travel itinerary and curious.

I wasn’t fond on Rome.

I would love to try Amsterdam but worried about safety: wouldn’t be interested in any of the ‘popular’ activities that folk do there, or the red light district. I more like the look of the food, culture, boat trips and museums.

Berlin is one of my favourite cities in the world! Very hard to go by others opinions - and you don’t know what they did there either 🤷‍♀️.

Mydogatemypurse · 05/12/2022 20:20

New York. Horrible place, Horrible people

MasterPretender · 05/12/2022 20:20

I second San Francisco. Found very little of interest to do there, and anything there was was so spread out.

Just didn't feel like a place you could wander around for hours. Also, fairly cold even in June.

Mumblechum0 · 05/12/2022 20:22

Venice was a big disappointment. San Fran is always freezing.

I like Prague, Budapest,Santa Barbara, Marrakech, New York, Rome, Milan, Córdoba,Seville, Singapore, Sydney, Hobart, Boston, Avignon, basically all the main cities in Europe,Aus and US, except Venice.

Wasn't impressed by either Paris (more grotty than expected and too many aggressive hawkers) or Lille (massive flea market when I was there so way too crowded - got caught up in a truly frightening crush of people in a cul de sac).
Amsterdam is my favourite city. So much to see and do, friendly people, very walkable. Felt very safe overall. OP, the more dodgy parts and activities are easily avoided. Liked Rotterdam too but it's got a more edgy feel.
Ghent is truly lovely and Antwerp is under-rated in my opinion.

tpmumtobe · 05/12/2022 20:22

Lisbon. Blergh..

Spendonsend · 05/12/2022 20:23

I didnt find copenhagen a great place for some reason.

Underscore21 · 05/12/2022 20:23

Dublin

Snoopystick · 05/12/2022 20:23

Agree about Istanbul, lovely buildings but generally felt unsafe and the friend who I was with was groped.

Underscore21 · 05/12/2022 20:23

very underwhelming

Caspianberg · 05/12/2022 20:24

Loved Berlin, Love Krakow for a long weekend, Ljubljana

Vienna - meh

Curtaintwitcher72 · 05/12/2022 20:24

Dublin. Disappointingly dull.

lonlon7 · 05/12/2022 20:24

I found Edinburgh underwhelming, it's so grey. Didn't love Dublin
Absolutely love Paris though and have been lots of times.

CrinchyGrinchy · 05/12/2022 20:25

Barcelona and Brussels. I would never want to go back to either. I hated them equally

JamSandle · 05/12/2022 20:25

I wasn't overly enamoured with:

Sydney
San Francisco
Paris

That said I had enjoyable times in each place but as places they didn't really jump at me. Sydney felt quite sterile. San Fran had beautiful houses but I just couldn't love it. Paris I found ugly and disappointing. But there are so many things that can go into having an enjoyable or unejoyable time and one persons idea of a not nice place is someone else's favourite.

shreddies · 05/12/2022 20:25

Dublin.

Love Paris but not when freezing cold

lonlon7 · 05/12/2022 20:25

Also love Amsterdam, Berlin and Barcelona

saffy7 · 05/12/2022 20:26

LiftyLift · 05/12/2022 20:05

Try Rotterdam, like Amsterdams younger cooler sister!

My friend from Rotterdam would agree!

I hated Barcelona, didn't feel safe, or particularly welcome.

My favourite city break is Madrid, but I really want to go to Sevilla next.

NameChangeLifeChange · 05/12/2022 20:27

Cologne was gorgeous and surprised me how much I loved it. To be honest I love most places I’ve been! Found Washington a bit bland but still enjoyed it. Parts of Paris v smelly and saw a homeless man pooing in the middle of the street! Still love Paris though!

jelly79 · 05/12/2022 20:28

Loved, Berlin and Nice
Hated Madrid

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/12/2022 20:28

I've been to Paris 3 times, I don't really understand the love.

BlueWalnut · 05/12/2022 20:28

It’s impossible for us to tell you because we all have different taste! Can we say a bit more about why we didn’t like particular cities?

I’ve found that most places have some redeeming features if you research them well.

jelly79 · 05/12/2022 20:29

tpmumtobe · 05/12/2022 20:22

Lisbon. Blergh..

Oooh I went recently and loved it

Forzatesoro · 05/12/2022 20:29

Bordeaux lovely
Munich nice
Here's great things about Maastricht and Bruges.

Agree about Dublin... not my cup of tea

diamondpony80 · 05/12/2022 20:31

I’ve loved all of those places listed. Don’t think I’ve ever been on a bad city break. Someone did try to grab my friends bag in Paris (didn’t succeed as she was holding on to it fairly well) but I’d expect that’s a problem in any city.
