Which city break did you NOT enjoy?

Where’s overrated, and why? Looking at making a 2023 travel itinerary and curious.

I wasn’t fond on Rome.

I would love to try Amsterdam but worried about safety: wouldn’t be interested in any of the ‘popular’ activities that folk do there, or the red light district. I more like the look of the food, culture, boat trips and museums.

Never thought about visiting Cologne. What's good to do there?

Joelyn · 05/12/2022 23:40

Milan and Prague

Tryingat47 · 05/12/2022 23:40

Only positive experience in Istanbul but probably not in December.

Winter city breast in Verona + Venice beautiful.

Marsa Al Alam in Egypt loved it in December.

ACynicalDad · 05/12/2022 23:41

Vegas, just awful

BaddogGooddoggy · 05/12/2022 23:42

Belfast was utterly depressing but Kracow was the most well-loved place I’ve ever visited.

RewildingAmbridge · 05/12/2022 23:42

Madrid, nice restaurants, bars and galleries but several times my then boyfriend was approached fairly aggressively by women selling sex, all while clearly with me and on some occasions whilst holding my hand! I felt for the women, but it made for an uncomfortable situation for both of us.

Vancouver - didn’t excite me, a bit too safe and beige

JamSandle · 05/12/2022 23:43

I'll add some I loved to compensate for those I didnt:

Venice
Nice
Cannes
Auckland
Brisbane
Berlin
Rome
Edinburgh
New Orleans
Chiang Mai
Seoul
Busan

Thinking Seville in winter

TheYummyPatler · 05/12/2022 23:47

I really liked Warsaw.

I’ve been to San Francisco twice. It was much better the second time. But I still felt it was wildly overrated. And expensive. I think I liked it better the second time because we hired a car and visited places that were not san Francisco, whereas the first time I just stayed in the city. 🤣

Cats23 · 05/12/2022 23:47

Paris
Overcrowded, beggers in your face every second, overpriced and over rated.

oviraptor21 · 05/12/2022 23:48

Stayed one night in Vegas and that was plenty for me.

Loved New York.
Love Venice despite the overcrowding and overwhelming tourism.
Love London.
Lots of wonderful British cities too. I'm planning to visit all of them.

TheYummyPatler · 05/12/2022 23:48

The worst city trip I’ve had was to Dundee though. I really dislike Dundee. I’ve been several times (because work made me). I wouldn’t choose to go again.

Whynobreadpudding · 05/12/2022 23:55

Austria, Vienna is very average, and we got conned into buying fake opera tickets by a very dressed up tout right outside the famous opera theatre.

Hemelbelle · 05/12/2022 23:56

I loved Rome but thought Amsterdam was overrated.

Try Rotterdam, like Amsterdams younger cooler sister!

I hated Rotterdam, we were attracted by the 90s song but then realised the lyrics weren't exactly selling it. It was very industrial and we didn't find much redeeming about it. Many other places in Holland we nicer, Den Hague, Delft, Amsterdam etc. We cut our trip to Rotterdam short to leave and go else where. Did we miss what was special about it? What did you find that you liked?

HellonHeels · 05/12/2022 23:58

Loved: NYC, Paris, Cologne, Nuremberg, Ghent, Amsterdam, Budapest, Athens, Thessaloniki, Rome, Krakow, Glasgow

Hated: Dublin (boring unless you like pubs and bars), Edinburgh (grey, forbidding), San Francisco (depressing, trading on the beat generation and summer of love, menacing vibes)

In the balance: Berlin (i liked it eventually but took a few days to warm to it). Bath, Sydney (should have been fun but the overt racism was awful), Barcelona (lovely to look at, but felt an edge of menace and saw police violently extracting someone from a car which was unpleasant)

Firen · 06/12/2022 00:03

LA is the worst place I’ve ever been to. Just dull, roads everywhere - you can’t walk!! I could feel any real life or culture there.

Doodar · 06/12/2022 00:05

I've been to most of the cities mentioned, the only place I haven't enjoyed is Vienna, very dull and £££££

Stunningscreamer · 06/12/2022 00:05

Marrakesh is the only one I really didn't like.

I like many of the places other people don't like on here because I like architecture, eating out and museums and you can find interesting places for that in most cities.

Puppylucky · 06/12/2022 00:07

Copenhagen was dull and very expensive!

Frizzlington · 06/12/2022 00:08

Lucca in Italy is lovely

Puppylucky · 06/12/2022 00:07

Copenhagen was dull and very expensive!

I'd agree with this.

TortolaParadise · 06/12/2022 00:11

Venice. too many pigeons

MsMelody · 06/12/2022 00:20

Another vote for Vegas. I expected it to be really kitschy and fun, but found it quite depressing.
