Which city break did you NOT enjoy?

Where’s overrated, and why? Looking at making a 2023 travel itinerary and curious.

I wasn’t fond on Rome.

I would love to try Amsterdam but worried about safety: wouldn’t be interested in any of the ‘popular’ activities that folk do there, or the red light district. I more like the look of the food, culture, boat trips and museums.

Panama City. Not really a touristy type of break… wouldn’t go back again

TricolourCat · 05/12/2022 23:17

Valencia is a lovely City to visit and unlike Barcelona with so many foreigners now living there it feels authentically Spanish and great seafood. Florence is also lovely if you like history of Art and delicious Italian food. Not a lot to do in Pisa once you have seen the Tower ;-D

Pidgeonslipshit · 05/12/2022 23:20

I went to Gothenburg and very underwhelmed…also quite scary after 9 pm .

LemonTT · 05/12/2022 23:21

Barcelona, because of the low level street crime. It had definite good points but isn’t a safe place. Lots of people I know have been mugged there. I wouldn’t recommend it.

SF was uncomfortable due to the homeless problem and I haven’t been their for nearly 20 years so fuck knows what it is like now. Has its good points.

Paris can be both overwhelming and underwhelming. I think you have to find time to feel vibe.

Love: Palma, Budapest, Oslo, Zurich, Berlin, Copenhagen, Washington DC
Meh: New York, Geneva, Belgrade, Rotterdam, Bratislava

Seville seems to be universally loved < licks pencil tip >

Seville is a lovely city to visit, but it is insanely hot in July & August.

I've never been anywhere where I haven't found something to like, but I don't think I'd go back to New York. I'm glad I've been and seen all the major sights there but it didn't blow me away. Dublin wasn't a great experience either but I was just pregnant with my first and was very sick (I was hospitalised with hyperemesis a few days after we got home) so I should probably give it another go.
My favourite cities in Europe are probably Milan, Berlin and Brussels though I also really enjoyed Valencia, Strasbourg and Zurich.

pinkpirlie · 05/12/2022 23:26

Love the Netherlands. So much I keep saying I want to move there You don't need to just do Amsterdam. I recently went for 10 days and only spent 1 day in Amsterdam.

Loved Barcelona,Warsaw, Copenhagen (just expensive), Malaga (off-season, January).

Hated Rome.

Hillary17 · 05/12/2022 23:27

Amazed so many people are hating on Paris; I went for the first time last year (after not really being that bothered) and cried because I loved it so much. Absolutely incredibly and fully lived up to the hype! Wasn’t a big fan of Brussels or Verona.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/12/2022 23:28

I don't think I've ever been on a city break (or longer city-based holiday) I didn't enjoy. We've avoid high summer and find that learning something about it first enhances our enjoyment. We've not done enough yet though.

Verbena17 · 05/12/2022 23:29

I did not enjoy Amsterdam. Went with uni in 1995 and stayed in a Yh. Room smelt like sewerage so maybe clouding my judgment.
I didn’t really enjoy the city though and a friend (male) was mugged at knife point on a Saturday lunch time in the famous Dam Square.

I didn’t really feel safe there at all.

crackersforcrackers · 05/12/2022 23:30

Paris- loads of scammers and I was so sick of being CONSTANTLY leered at and catcalled by men 😡

Verbena17 · 05/12/2022 23:30

Uk-wise - I also did not enjoy Bath as much as I thought I would. Strange I know but 🤷‍♀️

AnotherLogOnTheFire · 05/12/2022 23:31

Wasn’t keen on Venice - felt like a theme park -just tourists -Bruges is going down a similar path.

Notoironing · 05/12/2022 23:33

Here’s a hidden gem - Mahon in Menorca. Recommend for a couple of nights

Coconutcream123 · 05/12/2022 23:33

Didn't like Paris.
Loved Dubrovnik and Bruges

BaddogGooddoggy · 05/12/2022 23:34

New York (rude, banal), Prague (dirty), Dublin (boring). Best cities: Hong Kong (mad and exciting), San Francisco (cool) and London (just neverendingly interesting)

SantaOnFanta · 05/12/2022 23:34

Hated Amsterdam.

But I absolutely loved Copenhagen!
Prague is nice too and Salzburg in Austria.

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 05/12/2022 23:35

I hate London. Dirty, expensive, general air of things being worth it cos it's London, but they are not that great. DH parents live there and I hate going into the city centre with the DC to do anything. I just want to stay in PiLs nice, cosy, clean house and eat the delicious food that MiL cooks.

I am born and bred Mancunian and love the relaxed vibe. Parts of the city are a bit down at heel but I have good memories. I could not live anywhere else. DH and I bought a house in a formerly dodgy bit and it's nicer now with a tram link.

Harrogate disappointed us, grubby and not as historic (as in info or attractions) as we were expecting. Betty's Hot chocolate redeemed it a bit though. I worked at Leeds uni for a while and didn't care for the city either. We liked the aquarium in Hull but nothing else. Found Stockholm unnerving and too hemogenous felt a bit sinister, like Hitler's dreams come true.

Luxembourg, just the most boring city ever
Amsterdam actually feels quite safe - even the redlight district isn't dangerous as such its just unbelievably depressing - think crowds of tourists and actual punters milling around gawping at East European women in underwear in windows like they are meat in a butcher's shop. Thats the area right outside the station. There are other bits of Amsterdam a bit further in that are quirky, fun, have lovely parks etc etc. But there are lots of smaller cities - Leiden, Delft etc that are also lovely

JudgeJ · 05/12/2022 23:37

VeronicaBeccabunga · 05/12/2022 20:33

Edinburgh - dull, grey, filthy.
Dublin - OK but don't need to go back.
Venice - was so keen to go but oddly disappointing, somehow 'fake' and too self-consciously touristy.

Loved: New York, Chicago, Stockholm, Budapest

Totally support your description of Venice, we went on from there to Florence and loved it. I don't like Stratford upon Avon, the majority of it is just a tacky shopping area with just a few so-called Shakespeare places to screw money out of tourists.

I don’t think I’ve been to a single city I haven’t liked. Brisbane was a bit boring but pretty enough. No, I love a city break.

spuddel · 05/12/2022 23:39

I absolutely love Venice. Stayed at the Danieli last time and took a private tour of some galleries which was extraordinary.

Underwhelmed by New York, filthy, rude locals, over priced tat. Dublin and Paris have gone the same way.
