Where’s overrated, and why? Looking at making a 2023 travel itinerary and curious.

I wasn’t fond on Rome.

I would love to try Amsterdam but worried about safety: wouldn’t be interested in any of the ‘popular’ activities that folk do there, or the red light district. I more like the look of the food, culture, boat trips and museums.

Further afield but I hated San Francisco.
Went in June, very cold, but just couldn't see the appeal.

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 05/12/2022 20:04

Try Ghent and/or Bruges. Mini Amsterdams!

LiftyLift · 05/12/2022 20:05

Barcelona. Felt very unsafe.

I loved Amsterdam and felt very safe there.

Bluelightbaby · 05/12/2022 20:05

Loved : Rome, New York, Reykjavik, Edinburgh, Oslo, Venice,
Meh : Paris, Nice
hated : Naples & Barcelona

LiftyLift · 05/12/2022 20:05

Try Rotterdam, like Amsterdams younger cooler sister!

gemloving · 05/12/2022 20:06

Every single one when it was freezing cold. I'm not made for the cold x

sageandrosemary · 05/12/2022 20:06

Oh I adore Barcelona! I lived there for 6 weeks as an au pair. Surprised to see it pop up on hated lists!

America12 · 05/12/2022 20:08

Paris last time , although had been before and loved it.
Amsterdam- lovely.
Berlin - didn't like it.

StopGo · 05/12/2022 20:08

Warsaw. I really enjoy Eastern Europe but couldn't wait to leave Warsaw. Our lovely tour guide said it's common reaction.

crisscrosscringle · 05/12/2022 20:09

I didn't enjoy Amsterdam. I found it seedy, smelt like weed and food was a bit crap. 3 hour wait to get into the Anne Frank museum made worse by pouring rain and Van Gogh's sunflowers had been lent to another museum so didn't even see them.

Also, Dublin. Felt like London (on my doorstep) just really expensive.

For me, European cities that have absolutely lived up to the hype are Lisbon, Cologne, Berlin, Venice and Paris.

CarrieAnnQ · 05/12/2022 20:11

Just been to New York…not for me

zeddybrek · 05/12/2022 20:12

Paris, so dirty and smelly.

ShipwreckSunset · 05/12/2022 20:12

Wouldn’t return to Rome in a hurry.

MolesOnPoles · 05/12/2022 20:13

I loved all of those on the list so far (especially Napels, which I know is decisive). But I hated Vancouver, because of it’s really obvious and rather scary drug problem.

BookwormButNoTime · 05/12/2022 20:13

Istanbul. Went there expecting to love it.

Taxi from airport crashed on the way to the hotel - driving the wrong way down the motorway (and yes it was an official taxi!)

Stayed at the Hilton. Room was nice but everything else about the place sucked.

Robbed by another taxi driver. Someone tried to rip my (modest) engagement ring off my finger. Everywhere I went men grabbed me (I was wearing linen trousers and a long sleeved top).

Terrorist bomb went off in the bar / nightclub we were in just the night before.

Live animals (cats, dogs, chickens) in tiny cages with no water in markets.

Got the worst food poisoning ever - 15 days on the toilet.

And I was there with a girl from Istanbul who was in tears at the end of the trip as it had been so blooming awful.

Theyvelasted · 05/12/2022 20:13

I hated Barcelona but loved Warsaw. I was a bit ambivalent about Berlin.

LindorDoubleChoc · 05/12/2022 20:15

I can't say I didn't enjoy it, but a city I really don't think I'll go back to again having been there maybe 4 or 5 times over the years is Paris. It's just not that special.

user764329056 · 05/12/2022 20:17

You can’t go wrong with Scandi cities in my opinion

Onestepforwards2back · 05/12/2022 20:18

Paris and New York were a disappointment for me. Would have really loved to have enjoyed both.

PatientZorro · 05/12/2022 20:18

I’m not keen on New York, but I love Rome.

Forever42 · 05/12/2022 20:18

New York - too built up. Even Central Park had roads through it.

PermanentTemporary · 05/12/2022 20:19

I've never had much of a good time in Venice - mixture of issues. It really is extraordinary and beautiful but I have always found it really hard work.

Ditto Paris tbh.

Mummyboy1 · 05/12/2022 20:19

Paris. Very over rated, probably didn't help that we were scammed out of money there.

Claudia84 · 05/12/2022 20:19

Marrakesh

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 05/12/2022 20:19

New York

I've been to Amsterdam twice and loved it though!
