Where’s overrated, and why? Looking at making a 2023 travel itinerary and curious.

I wasn’t fond on Rome.

I would love to try Amsterdam but worried about safety: wouldn’t be interested in any of the ‘popular’ activities that folk do there, or the red light district. I more like the look of the food, culture, boat trips and museums.

Hated Paris - never felt safe and definitely wouldn't go back

Loved Amsterdam and felt safe but had no interest in any of the adult themed things on offer so maybe those areas wouldn't be so safe

Citalopramadvice · 05/12/2022 20:32

Paris - over hyped, filthy and expensive
Budapest - properly romantic, loads to do if it’s hot or cold
Venice in April is lovely, wouldn't want to go any other time if the year

i would recommend getting cheap flights into Milan, stay for a day and then head to lake como on the train - best long weekend ever, we stayed in an air bnb on the lake and it was magic

Oblomov22 · 05/12/2022 20:32

Haven't ever been anywhere I didn't like.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 05/12/2022 20:33

Edinburgh - dull, grey, filthy.
Dublin - OK but don't need to go back.
Venice - was so keen to go but oddly disappointing, somehow 'fake' and too self-consciously touristy.

Loved: New York, Chicago, Stockholm, Budapest

MinnesotaMuffin · 05/12/2022 20:33

San Francisco. 1st visit back in the mid 90s was fantastic but most recent visit in 2016 the city had a much more seedy vibe. There was a significant and really sad issue with drugs and homelessness.

Stockholm and Copenhagen are fantastic.

Elsiebear90 · 05/12/2022 20:33

I’ve been to a lot of cities and the only one that I didn’t really enjoy was LA. It was such a letdown, I found it quite boring, nothing much to do or see other than restaurants, bars and shops, there are few sites to see, but you can do them in a day, very congested, no real culture, huge homeless/drug problem.

Searchingforsunshine · 05/12/2022 20:33

Didn't enjoy Belfast, Edinburgh or Dublin

Searchingforsunshine · 05/12/2022 20:34

And new York, not for me

FHmama · 05/12/2022 20:34

Bratislava, Slovakia. Most boring city ever.

Bobbybobbins · 05/12/2022 20:34

Love Barcelona, Paris, Rome, Bologna, Edinburgh, Berlin, Amsterdam, New York, Ljubljana.

Less keen on Dublin (found it quite provincial), Copenhagen (so expensive and cold), Florence.

RambamThankyouMam · 05/12/2022 20:35

Venice.

So damp and dreary, with an oppressive feeling I could neither explain nor shake.

IntentionalError · 05/12/2022 20:35

Paris. Grotty unsafe, unwelcoming and a rip-off for tourists. Apparently the place is being cleaned up & given a makeover for the Olympics. I hope so, because it’s decades overdue.

Dublin. I didn’t dislike it, but I was expecting a mini-London with tons of interesting stuff to see & do. Instead, I found it reminded me of boring provincial British cities like Leeds. Ridiculously expensive, too.

Changingmynameyetagain · 05/12/2022 20:35

Hated Paris, we got scammed by a taxi driver on way from the train station to the hotel and it went downhill from there.
The number of scammers around the tourist attractions it so annoying, someone tried to pickpocket me outside the Notredame.
Never ever want to go again.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 05/12/2022 20:36

I love Amsterdam. Listen to the locals about which bits to avoid. I've loved Paris, Rome, Venice, Athens, Naples, Palermo, Chartres, Basel and in fact all the other European cities I've been to, apart from those in Germany. I found Germany unfriendly. Love France and Italy. I won't be going back to Tangier either.

Despairingof · 05/12/2022 20:36

Skopje - thought about going home the first night.

Isleoftights · 05/12/2022 20:38

Lisbon....so hilly. Walking anywhere was hard work.

FleasNavidad · 05/12/2022 20:38

Barcelona - unsafe and crowded
Sydney - meh
Lisbon - didn't hate it but it's weird and tense

Northernsoullover · 05/12/2022 20:39

Dublin. It was incredibly charmless

HomerDancing · 05/12/2022 20:41

Hated Bratislava - extremely expensive and really not much to see or do.

Also hated Paris the last time I went, one in my group got pickpocketed, I grabbed at by loads of men and felt so unsafe. Such a shame.

Loved loads of places but it especially Vienna, Amsterdam and Budapest.

chickywick6 · 05/12/2022 20:42

I tend to find some charm in most places and have been to most European capital cities. Belgrade stands out at the worse. It was grey and depressing

Tayegete · 05/12/2022 20:42

Loved Sydney and Melbourne and hated Adelaide. In Europe love Berlin, Prague and Barcelona. Paris great first time 20 years ago but not so great earlier this year. Found Dublin boring, went for 4 days was bored after 2.

glasshole · 05/12/2022 20:42

I've been to krakow in December 3 times. 6 years ago I went and loved it . Great food, lovely people etc but got really sick 2 days in and had to come home. Developed pneumonia.

3 years ago I went, loved it. Came home I'll. The day after developed pneumonia.

Why on Tuesday gone. Took my teenager to the class markers as it was a lovely cheap break. Ate great food, saw lovely places. Thursday I woke with a raging temp. Suddenly went downhill and had to pay £££to change our flights. Friday morning was diagnosed with pneumonia again.

Spoke to a friend that's from Krakow and lives in my town. She says that every single winter she visits she gets really sick with throat/chest issues. Absently is to do with the city smog and cloud cover preventing it from leaving so it sits like a toxic blanket.

I won't be going to Krakow again!

Iceland is absurdly beautiful and I've been 3 times and never got sick. It's week with a visit but it's very expensive.

h78 · 05/12/2022 20:43

Rome, great for sightseeing but really dirty.
Paris is a dump too

Edinburgh is gorgeous
Istanbul very lively

dementedma · 05/12/2022 20:43

Didnt really enjoy Berlin. Too big and impersonal.

stickybear · 05/12/2022 20:48

I didn't enjoy Budapest. Away from the river it was ugly and dirty and I found the atmosphere quite hostile. The House of Terror museum was really unpleasant. Also found Barcelona quite edgy once you're away from the main drag. I love Rome but agree with others that the hawkers and scammers get tiresome. Last time I went I was only there for the day and I got scammed at the main railway station then saw someone having her bag snatched.
Absolutely loved Madrid. Went with very few expectations and had a great few days. Good food, interesting things to see, quite walkable, reasonable prices, and pleasant weather (we went early spring). Absolutely loved Seville too but could not deal with the heat.
