If you love Edinburgh and Amsterdam...

Which other European cities do you like? I am not a fan of London, Paris or New York but really like Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Seville and Granada. Trying to think of somewhere (new) to go for a birthday weekend - preferably not in Spain - and wondered if anyone had any good ideas?

Dublin.
Malta is nice with an easy to use bus system for around the island. The capital Valletta is beautiful but I don't think there is much nightlife there.

Thanks! I should have said, it will be early December so was thinking somewhere with a nice vibe around that time of year. Was thinking Christmassy but right now, the thought of escaping to some sun is quite appealing too.

Copenhagen. Marrakesh. Completely different, but both great cities.

Reykjavik

Stockholm is lovely, but obviously in December not warm. It’s the same sort of size as Edinburgh in terms of walking around the centre (but it is much flatter) although it’s a bigger city overall and has great public transport. Lots to do and see, cosy cafes, good food. Pricey though.

Prague, Krakow, Berlin or Bremen. Or Ljublijana, or Salzburg.

AngryAnnie · 12/01/2018 11:44

Florence. Florence and Edinburgh are my two favourite cities.

GrabbyMcGrabby · 12/01/2018 11:46

Rome. Or head to Tuscany and do Florence, Siena or even go to smaller towns like San Gimigiano. Venice? Italy is wonderful at Christmas.

MaureenNervosa · 12/01/2018 11:46

Rome.

We stayed in Valletta in December a couple of years ago. It was fairly sunny but not shorts and t-shirt weather. The seaside resort areas were sunnier.

Strasbourg

Ljgstorm · 12/01/2018 11:48

Bologna in Italy. Or ghent is lovely at Christmas

Thank you!
Some great suggestions. I've actually been to (and loved) Prague, Rome and Copenhagen. Salzburg, Budapest and Florence on my list.
Never even considered Strasbourg, Bologna or Ghent but just googled them and they look so beautiful! Off to do research.

Berlin at around Christmas is fantastic fun - amazing food, beer, culture and fascinating history. Venice is stunning - I know people moan about the food but there are amazing places if you just meander off the main drag. The bars are fabulous and the variety of cicchetti is joyful!

Waddlelikeapenguin · 12/01/2018 17:14

Copenhagen & Belfast

altkat · 12/01/2018 17:16

Berlin or Warsaw. Latter is super easy to walk around, former a little bigger but good public transport. Fantastic good in both places and some gorgeous architecture. I live in and adore Edinburgh and these are my next favourite cities at the moment!

PringlesPirate · 12/01/2018 17:17

Belfast or Stockholm

Taffeta · 12/01/2018 17:17

Lisbon
St Petersburg

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 12/01/2018 17:19

Copenhagen, expensive but exceptionally nice people. I've been to Dublin in December it was lovely, very Christmassy. Like Edinburgh lots of Georgian architecture. Both fairly compact cities easy to walk to most places of interest.

TheSnorkMaidenReturns · 12/01/2018 17:20

Of places you've not said you've been to I'd suggest Ghent, Stockholm, Reykjavik, Strasbourg, Oslo, Berlin.

NeversayNever2 · 12/01/2018 17:26

Salzburg

OublietteBravo · 12/01/2018 17:27

I love Strasbourg, but it can be a bit tricky to get to from the UK (I don't think there are any direct flights - I've always done Eurostar to Paris and then TGV to Strasbourg).

WildCherryBlossom · 12/01/2018 17:36

I know you said you didn't want Spain but Palma is lovely at Christmas time. I've only been to Dublin in Spring and Stockholm & Lille in Summer but they are all beautiful cities. I've never been to Vienna but it might worth looking at.
