Can a second-year student carry one failed module into final year?

BlueMum16 · 07/09/2026 17:58

DS has just found he has failed one module in year two.

Uni are not replying to emails just saying someone will be in touch in due course.

Oringally he was told resit in August, if passed continue to finalise year. If fails again then drop out or resit the whole year two again.

DA hates uni. Will not resit year two. Cost would be massive. Time also an issue.

It's one module. What's the chances he can continue in year 3 and maybe just pick up the module as an extra?

It's Bio Med.

How does he not know whether it’s core or optional - he could look on the website. Confused If he selected it probably optional. But he should know - the website is very clear what the core modules are for each year.

Biomed is non-clinical btw.

He's checked and it's optional.

Does that make a difference?

Was his mark 35 or 30?

The exam board will consider his situation. Usually they will either offer a resit without attendance on just that module, or retake with attendance (still just that module but will need to attend class). He will not be required to resit modules he has already passed, but equally he won't be able to carry the fail into year 3, so he will have a year with just one module. If the module is to be done without attendance then he won't be eligible for a student loan. Most students try to find work for the year whilst doing the resit. He should look on his department or school intranet site as they will point him in the direction of more support with this. Most departments at UoL have Learning and Teaching Support Officers who are not teaching staff but are good at helping with this sort of thing.

The regs suggest he will be able to carry over the fail. Unless it was core or he got less than 35%. Neither of which OP knows.

If it is optional and he didn’t like it he should be given the chance to take another module next year instead as well as the full year 3 load.

Mumteedum · 07/09/2026 21:33

The link you want is https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/media/livacuk/tqsd/code-of-practice-on-assessment/appendix_B_2014-15_cop_assess.pdf

As said above though, he should be notified of progression. It depends on when that board has taken place. You get exam boards to decide results on modular level and then another board that decides degree classifications, exit awards and progression.

You want to speak to student setvices really. It'll be the registry team who have the record rather than any individual academic staff member.

Yes - the regs have been quoted to you and linked. He should also be able to find this stuff out - it’s all publicly available on their website.

Overall for the module was 33.

Ok, so that is a fail. And will require a resit, so my advice remains as above.

Ramblingaway · 07/09/2026 21:37

If he really hated the module, the School may permit a change of module, to be taken with attendance. He may need to get approval for that from the Head of Department or Chair if the Board of examiners. It's worth having the conversation and getting some guidance.

So it was optional and 33%.

So that's a fail .

Does that mean resit the module or the year?

If it's the module does that take a full year and another £10k of fees?

By the way, this happens to more students than you would think. Things usually come right in the end, and three years down the line, once he's got his first job, nobody will notice on his CV that he had an extra year of study at uni. It seems huge now, but it won't always feel like this, for him or you xx

Ramblingaway · 07/09/2026 21:43

I can't think of any reason he would resit the full year. It's not in the CoPA to ever happen. It will just be the module. If with attendance then fees are pro-rata so depends on if it was a 15 or 30 credit module. If it's resit without attendance, it's a flat charge just to take the exam.

titchy · 07/09/2026 21:44

He’ll have to resit the module (or another module) next year then it seems. But he shouldn’t be charged the full fee. We would change a pro-rata fee in those circumstance.

Mumteedum · 07/09/2026 21:44

Our uni would charge for the module but Student Finance England give 4 years of funding so students can have a wobble and have it paid I think! Student services need a call. They'll talk him through it.

Thank you. I just need to find a way for him to complete it

He's a bright young man but will likely drop out which is such a waste when only Oct-May to complete (assuming he can do something with this failed module.

I don't want him thinking his part time jobs are a career option.

He really needs to sort this himself and should have been all over this. He should try his Personal Tutor.

And also if he failed an exam on what planet can he not explore to undrrstamd if he needs to resit. Honestly...the desire to blame unis and take little or no reslonsibikity is astoundinf
He failed an exam..likely scenario is he needs to resit it. What part of that was hard to unddrstand and why dkdnt he prepare and plan amd focus on the task at hand

I understand all that. What I said about the uni was the communication wasn't and still isn't good.

But it's all now about what happens next.

Thank you all those that are really helping. You are making tonight a little less stressful.

I agree but no one is responding. He's emailed the module tutor today, he's moved on and no contact details for replacement. There is no personal tutor . When he tried them at the end of year one for help with options etc was basically told to go away. He's emailed the Faculty, they've said it's the assessment team. The assessment team have said they emailed at 12 noon (didn't receive it). They've resent that at 4.45 and all it says is that someone will be in touch in due course. He has asked the assessment team to confirm the email address they've been using as like I've said he has had NO information about the first fail, the resit, the results or now the what next. They are utterly terrible.

He's tried ringing too. No answer.

He is all over it but getting absolutely nothing back

He's panicking he's wasted £20k and two years for nothing. Or he can waste another £20k and another two years to finish a degree he's not enjoying and wished he'd not started.

He's spiralling and I'm his mum. He's struggling and upset. Do you really expect me to say "crack on and sort you own shit "?

I guess you k ow this, but part of the reason your son is not getting answers from many people at the uni, is that they aren't bacl yet for the autumn term, and its normal for lecturers to really take prrtty much all their summer off, like school teachers do. I know its hard for your son to wait, but he needs to accept that he'll get full answers when he goes back (and my guess is that its relatively unlikely that the answer will be that he's being thrown out with no room for negotiation, because they would have tolde him if that was the case).

He's not back until end of September. He's got 10 days to appeal and is on holiday at the end of the week and working every day before then.

He's panicking. I'm trying to calm him amd help.

Thank you though. Every reply is appreciated.

Hang on in there, the email (when it comes) should clearly state if the resit is with or without attendance. Then he can have an appointment with the Money Advice Team if he needs info on loans etc. If he isn't getting advice from his tutor, he can always speak to the Head of Department. They don't bite!

It looks like all the year 2 option modules run in semester 2 - so you’ve got a few months to persuade him…

Sorry for daft questions and thank you for all your replies....does this mean he just does that module next year and then does year 3 in September 2027?

I worry about him attempting a third exam on a module he doesn't enjoy with no study.

Interesting that some of you say it could be reduced fees if attendance was needed. That might convince him.

How much commitment does he have to passing the module. Scoring only 33 in the resit exam is really quite low - he's not just missed it. Universities don't chase students. Also not knowing whether the module was core or optional - I don't think you are getting the full story. Which matters if you are expecting him to complete it again.

He got exactly the same in the resit as in the first exam.

Probably not had a clear answer earlier but that was panic. We're both calmer now.

He hates this module..if he can pick and pay (pro rata) for another I think he would love to do that.
