Can a second-year student carry one failed module into final year?

BlueMum16 · 07/09/2026 17:58

DS has just found he has failed one module in year two.

Uni are not replying to emails just saying someone will be in touch in due course.

Oringally he was told resit in August, if passed continue to finalise year. If fails again then drop out or resit the whole year two again.

DA hates uni. Will not resit year two. Cost would be massive. Time also an issue.

It's one module. What's the chances he can continue in year 3 and maybe just pick up the module as an extra?

It's Bio Med.

He/you meed to be onto the university and really really push them.

Flag up he had little notice

Get student advisors involved.

Check the appeals procedure.

They're often VERY time limited.

If it's important to him, he really needs to prioritise this over holiday!

clarrylove · 07/09/2026 20:52

Why doesn't he have a PT? I would actually advise he go in tomorrow and try and sort face to face.

I'm sorry but if he failed that module, he should not have needed notice to work towards a resit. He should have been on that himself. You've totally lost my sympathy. I don't hold out any hope for final year (big jump up) with that work ethic.

I wasn't after sympathy. Just advice from anyone that can offer some.

He was on track for a first so not a particularly big jump in work. All other modules with high passes. He didn't enjoy this one.

The resit was the day after his birthday and he's spent most of the summer working 3 jobs and not just sat around.

Thanks for stopping by.

What module was it, and what was his actual mark? The regs say that he can progress to year 3 if the failed module was an option rather than core, he got 35% - 39% in it and his year average was over 40%

Edited to add: the regs also indicate he may well be allowed to retake the entire module next year - obvs that would mean taking 150 credits in the year.

SulkingInTheCatio · 07/09/2026 21:00

Remember the students union is an actual union who can help advise and represent him if necessary. He needs to get hold of them tomorrow for support as well.

The progression requirements and criteria for the award of clinical first degrees shall be clearly
defined and readily available in the appropriate programme documentation.

does he have a programme handbook?

SulkingInTheCatio · 07/09/2026 21:06

Ok, does it count as a non clinical degree? If so I think he can retake the module alongside year 3?

on-clinical Bachelor’s
programmes
The criteria for completing each year of
study, other than the final year, and for
progression to the next year/level of study,
require you to:
(i) Pass (ie achieve 40%) all mandatory
modules;
and
(ii) Pass (ie achieve 40%) in modules
amounting to 90 credits; and
(iii) Achieve at least 40% averaged across
all modules and a minimum mark of 35% in
all modules.
These criteria are compulsory for study
Years 0, One and Two and for levels of study
4 and 5 in three-year and four-year (year
in industry or abroad) Bachelor’s degrees.
Students who fail to meet the requirements
for progression to the next year of study
following re-assessment may be allowed
by the Board of Examiners to re-take the
modules in the following academic session.
Students who fail a year of study on two
occasions shall normally be required by
the Board of Examiners to terminate their
studies.

Student results are not usually shared via email - does he not have an LMS / equivalent where he would check his profile?

Anyway, it’s a moot point now but it seems really strange he wasn’t more proactive when be first failed.

I’m also surprised with his other high grades he had no option to compensate.

The communication from the university does seem really strange to me; once he failed the resit, they should have been in touch with very clear information about the next steps.

All he can do is continue to keep contacting them, really, including directly emailing the relevant lecturer.

There’s also this in the same document on page 49. I think you said he got 35% so not sure if this is valid?

Bachelor’s programmes:
Reassessment in Years 0,
One and Two/levels 4 and 5
Note: students on clinical programmes
should refer to their Programme Handbook.
The University’s progression rules provide
that a student may narrowly fail modules
totalling 30 credits in study Years 0, One
and Two and levels of study 4 and 5 and
still progress to the next year of study,
provided that all the other modules
(including all mandatory modules) have
been passed, that the marks in the failed
modules are in the range 35-39%, and that
the overall average mark for the modules
taken (totalling 120 credits) is at least 40%.

Yes failed the resit. Got exactly the same mark twice. Think he was about 5 marks off a pass

Annoying thing was the uni didn't tell him he had to resit and he only found out really late (few days before the exam) with no time to revise. Apparently there were lots of students that didn't turn up for the resit.

Today they've not told him what a second fail means. Said emails have gone out at 12 which he's not had. When they've resent it, all it says is someone will be in touch in due course. He off on holiday on Thursday so needs this sorting before then.

It's so difficult as he's spiralling about it all being for nothing, a waste of time and money, What's the point. You get the idea. And uni are just not there - no helping, no supporting, no guiding or even just answering their emails/phone.

Your son is saying nonsense. Module results will be released on a specific day each year (mine was June 25). Students are expected to check their results and if they scored under the required % (widely shared, generally 40%) then they know they have to resit.

If he didn’t bother to check his results that’s on him the university doesn’t have to alert him that he needs to resit.

If he selected it then it’s not a core module.

The results were on the portal. The email (which we were missing) notified of the date/time of the exam.

He only stopped this on the portal on 31st July, exam was 7th August. Yes he should have been revising more by then already. I know. He knows. Hindsight.

Everything points to the assessment email which is the team that are not replying quickly or without anything helpful. He has 10 days to appeal.

Surely any email regarding exams and uni course would be sent to his university email account that he will have set up when he started there. All my course information was sent to my uni email account. Get him to log onto his and check any information

The uni website says resita are August and they'll publish final dates 23rd July. He saw it on the portal on 31st July. He'd been working and didn't check before

Regardless he saw it, sat it and failed it. It's the follow up now I'm trying to find info on.

It won't be grounds for an appeal as it's on him like you say.

I agree but no one is responding. He's emailed the module tutor today, he's moved on and no contact details for replacement. There is no personal tutor . When he tried them at the end of year one for help with options etc was basically told to go away. He's emailed the Faculty, they've said it's the assessment team. The assessment team have said they emailed at 12 noon (didn't receive it). They've resent that at 4.45 and all it says is that someone will be in touch in due course. He has asked the assessment team to confirm the email address they've been using as like I've said he has had NO information about the first fail, the resit, the results or now the what next. They are utterly terrible.

He's tried ringing too. No answer.

He is all over it but getting absolutely nothing back

He's panicking he's wasted £20k and two years for nothing. Or he can waste another £20k and another two years to finish a degree he's not enjoying and wished he'd not started.

He's spiralling and I'm his mum. He's struggling and upset. Do you really expect me to say "crack on and sort you own shit "?

Does he not have access to an academic progress tracker somewhere? Ours is called evision.

How does he not know whether it’s core or optional - he could look on the website. Confused If he selected it probably optional. But he should know - the website is very clear what the core modules are for each year.

Biomed is non-clinical btw.

SulkingInTheCatio · 07/09/2026 21:19

Was the failed assessment the only assessment for that module or did he have other tests/assignments as well in that specific module?

Biomed sits in the School of Biosciences at Liverpool have you tried contacting the school? They might not be back from summer yet but you can try them.

It's City of Liverpool.

University of Liverpool, you mean?

Ramblingaway · 07/09/2026 21:23

The exam board will consider his situation. Usually they will either offer a resit without attendance on just that module, or retake with attendance (still just that module but will need to attend class). He will not be required to resit modules he has already passed, but equally he won't be able to carry the fail into year 3, so he will have a year with just one module. If the module is to be done without attendance then he won't be eligible for a student loan. Most students try to find work for the year whilst doing the resit. He should look on his department or school intranet site as they will point him in the direction of more support with this. Most departments at UoL have Learning and Teaching Support Officers who are not teaching staff but are good at helping with this sort of thing.

SulkingInTheCatio · 07/09/2026 21:23

Part of the problem may be that the resits exam board likely doesn’t sit until Sept. So an official decision can’t be notified to a student until they’ve been through that board. However someone should be able to offer some guidance over what the regulations say and what is likely to happen.

There were other elements. Coursework and something else. Passed those bits but this exam has pulled his grade down
