University packing lists including condoms: is this now standard advice?

My ds2 has got his essential packing list for university, including condoms. I know, better to do it safely than not but really?

When I was 18 you only needed condoms if you were in a long term relationship. Is it so different these days?

I'll admit that I'm struggling with the idea that my 18 year old us old enough to go to university so the idea of him needing condoms as well is a bit out of my comfort zone.

As someone who got pregnant in her first year of uni (and terminated) yes, they absolutely do. It it was my son, I’d be packing three boxes! Freshers is like a mating ritual!

I work at a university, although not student facing; and there will also be ample opportunity to get free condoms during freshers week

People were having sex outside of long term relationships in your day op. They just got pregnant or an sti if the boys didn’t put a condom on.

Op, I know I must be older than you - I was at Uni in the 1980s, and the Family Planning Clinic (as was) had a stand at Freshers Week and a satellite clinic at Uni during Freshers week.

I remember being mortified when I was handed condoms at the fresher’s fair in 2005, I was with my parents and I felt so awkward. I don’t think it’s unusual!

OP, I'm not sure when you were 18, but students were shagging around when I was at uni 30 plus years go. Remember the less than savoury expression "find a friendly fresher". Universities as requested now being more upfront, that's all.

Do you have a first aid kit at home? You know, just in case someone needs a plaster, or a paracetemol etc? Do you think it causes accidents?

University students should ve smart enough to work out that having a condom doesnt mean you have to have sex. Just tgat its better to use barrier contraception if you do have sex.

Even I'd needed them by the end of the first term at uni, and I was an absolutely massive geek!

I went to university in thde early 80's- they were already on the packing list then.

Even my fairly uptight mother would not have been surprised by this over 30 years ago when I went to uni. Students have been being given free condoms for decades. HIV and other STDs mean condoms are sensible.

But not compulsory - no one will check their kit and condom-shame if none are present.

However I am a bit concerned that at 18 you would seem not to have discussed the importance of condoms with your Ds and emphasised that the moment you need one is too late to be thinking of getting one.
