Thought I’d start this thread in case anyone else with a DC who didn’t get an offer from Oxford (or Cambridge in a couple of weeks time) wants to say anything - I feel a bit out of place in the Oxbridge thread now but could be good to have somewhere to talk about how they are and what their plans are now.

@lifeturnsonadime DD is waiting for offer holder days before she finalises her decision but I think she will go UCL.

Lightsabre · 15/01/2024 22:41

Great news @catmomof3!

I’m not sure if KCL or UCL hold them, I couldn’t find anything on line . I hope they do as my son missed the UCL in person open day.

catmomof3 · 16/01/2024 05:50

@lifeturnsonadime They did last year my DD's friend went to both after he got offers.

Ah brilliant, I'll ask DS to watch out for one then. He's decided on UCL but it still might be nice to have a look!

MirandaWest · 17/01/2024 17:06

DD has had her offer holders day invitation for Bristol so is happily planning what she’s going to see and do. I just get to pay for hotel and train as she wants to go on her own (which I do understand as I was like that although as it is a way away would be good to get a bit more of an idea….)

Bristol will be fab to go and visit again, think we'll look at it with a different set of eyes as offer holders. I remember it having a great city vibe and we loved all the uni buildings we visited. Very exciting indeed. Does anyone know if UCL hold offer days too?

PumpkinKnitter · 17/01/2024 23:44

DD is booked into offer holder days at both Exeter and Bristol. She didn’t go to open days at either so it will be interesting to see what she thinks. Still hoping for Edinburgh though!

pinkroseapp · 18/01/2024 07:38

My DS applied Biology at Oxford and didn’t get an invite for interview, he was actually relieved. I was more worried as he has also applied imperial and UCL, I was worried his personal statement or predict grades were not good enough to get offers from any of those two. Last week he received an offer from imperial for biological sciences required AAA which is more achievable than Oxford A*AA. Not heard back from UCL yet, but I think he is going to choose imperial over UCL anyway.

PumpkinKnitter · 18/01/2024 09:45

Congratulations to your DS @pinkroseapp. That is an excellent offer.

Cx5 · 18/01/2024 11:01

@pinkroseapp that's excellent, congrats to your son! My DS was also rejected before interview from O (maths) and is still waiting to hear from imperial.

DD also waiting for Edinburgh. She seems pretty committed to Bristol at the moment but not sure whether that will change if she gets an offer from Edinburgh

@MirandaWest also waiting Edinburgh - v keen to do a visit as we didn’t do open days anywhere, but not keen to go before an offer in case she loves it and then doesn’t get one; ditto Durham. Was hoping to use Half Term but is doing KCL that week and then has Bristol later

PumpkinKnitter · 18/01/2024 13:06

@Headingto18 We went up for an open day so won’t need to go again for an offer day (if she gets one!). We went to Edinburgh for a short break a couple of years ago and DD fell in love with the city. She also loved everything about the open day. It is a great place to study. Just hoping they come through with an offer!

Lightsabre · 18/01/2024 13:07

We may need a part two thread soon!

Lightsabre · 18/01/2024 13:08

Apologies, wrong thread! Meant for the general year 13 one.

WriterOfWrongs · 18/01/2024 13:20

Ha @PumpkinKnitter that's exactly the same for us. We did a drive around the university when there and DD really loved it. She wanted to apply there but pragmatically decided that unfortunately given health issues, it was too far from home just in case her health issues flared up again and she needed support.

Umbilicate · 18/01/2024 14:31

Have said previouslly that I'm v happy to answer any qs on Edinburgh in DMs - a few ppl have already asked me things. DD there in y2, v happy. It is a fabulous city

YouOKHun · 18/01/2024 15:29

My DS is also waiting for Edinburgh and Bristol. He’s on a gap year so I hope there is some news before he disappears off on his travels. I know they both tend to offer rather late in the day. Slightly edgy about the cost of both cities (Oxford costs would have been more certain!).

WriterOfWrongs · 18/01/2024 15:29

Sorry just realised I saw @PumpkinKnitter 's post above and replied without realising this is a redirected from Oxbridge thread, which doesn't apply in DD's case as she didn't apply. Blush

DS has received a humanities offer from Durham today. He got the standard home,non-contextual A star, AA offer. Having been rejected by Oxford after interview last week, this is a huge relief for him. I think he would have been more disappointed to be rejected by Durham and especially if he had to wait months for it to come.

So now he has 4 offers and can think about which will be his insurance. Feeling very fortunate.

That's fantastic news @WombatChocolate ! Such a relief when the other offers are in and there is somewhere other than Oxford they can get excited for x

Anxhor · 19/01/2024 04:15

@WombatChocolate that's a relief

It's so annoying they didn't get into Oxford really having to decide on what flipping Uni to choose for their specific course and if that uni will suit them

O might have been a total disaster for them for all we know but hey ho

DS wants to go to the next highest ranking uni for Maths which I really really do not want him to go to for various reasons as there are other excellent unis he has offers from. He is still waiting from Imperial (please reject him) ( is that awful of me). I just envision him being lonely surrounded by Chinese who he can't understand and completely skint with the housing costs

pinkroseapp · 19/01/2024 07:44

@Anxhor
I was worried about the costs that study at imperial (London). Do you know imperial offers bursaries and home students qualify automatically. Home students will receive some bursaries with household income under 70k a year. So maybe not as bad as you thought. ?

pinkroseapp · 19/01/2024 07:46

@PumpkinKnitter
Thank you 😊
