Thought I’d start this thread in case anyone else with a DC who didn’t get an offer from Oxford (or Cambridge in a couple of weeks time) wants to say anything - I feel a bit out of place in the Oxbridge thread now but could be good to have somewhere to talk about how they are and what their plans are now.

Lovely update. DS is absolutely loving Imperial. I think he also would have loved Oxford but we've all made our peace with it now. DD finishes at Oxford in May - it has gone in a flash!

predicted 4 A stars, all 9s at gcse - maths, FM, economics & geography - fantastic super curriculars and great PS

She should get some good acceptances then. Cambridge is just so competitive. I think LSE is too, but I wouldn't be surprised fi all the others offer. Good luck!

@Ellmau unless the tmua results are a 2! 😫 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

I know many students rejected by St Andrews that were accepted by Oxbridge.

So true. What’s right for one university isn’t right for another. They each know what they are looking for in their potential students, and it’s often more than just excellent exam results.

For any past or future C offer holders who don’t make STEP they’re in good company with Natasha Fry, hopefully with her new role she will make it more accessible for those without any support and guidance from schools that many are extremely fortunate enough to have.

My DS didn’t have any help at all
& although he did really well he just didn’t quite make it on his own revision so this could be a real game changer in the future for those in similar predicaments.

Hopefully for future maths holders this offers some hope to make it a bit more accessible for all with the extra huge obstacle that is STEP. Also Natasha is a huge inspiration and a reminder to all those who don’t quite make it that they are not alone in being fantastic at maths and not getting through that last hurdle and you can still do amazing things! 😊

Lovely to see all redirected are thriving elsewhere, my DS has long forgotten his disappointment of missing his offer due to STEP and is loving his new uni life 😅

How is everyone's DC doing after one term down? DS had his first batch of exams before Christmas, as he has done direct entry to second year (Edinburgh), these will count towards his degree.(He is a little nervous as to how he has done). The consequence of the early exams mean he has only seen his school friends a couple of times as they all have exams when they go back, and some have coursework to complete. I think after the first week home over Christmas he is now bored and wants to go back!

DC had a good first term at Durham; has worked out very well for them and they are excited to go back next weekend. Yes both DC and most of their friends have been busy studying or revising for parts of the holiday (but did manage a NYE party amongst other things). Only one person has withdrawn after the first term of their school cohort, due to wanting to move to a joint honours next autumn. So far so good - is wondering what they should do in the summer though

@mushroom3 isn't it just the final 2 (or 3 y for masters) that count towards your degree at Edinburgh? 🤞

My son has settled in really well there and is looking forward to going back at the weekend.
Other son went back to an exam yesterday (Warwick) but it didn't stop him enjoying his time at home and they both had a few nights out with friends.

Thanks@Cx5 , I think your Edinburgh DS may be on the same course as mine? I will send him the link.

Cx5 · 07/01/2025 20:27

Possibly, he's mmath direct entry.

mushroom3 · 07/01/2025 20:42

My DS too @Cx5 !
