Thought I’d start this thread in case anyone else with a DC who didn’t get an offer from Oxford (or Cambridge in a couple of weeks time) wants to say anything - I feel a bit out of place in the Oxbridge thread now but could be good to have somewhere to talk about how they are and what their plans are now.

DS got 3 As & secured UCL! Absolutely delighted for him. Well done everyone ⭐️⭐️👍

Ragdollcharlie · 15/08/2024 16:54

DS got Astar AA and got his place at Durham - incredibly relieved as he was very sick for his last two exams, so really wasn't sure he'd make it. Well done to everyone making their offers!

Newgirls · 15/08/2024 18:11

Dd delighted with her results and uni place and wouldn’t have got the standard Oxford offer for her course today so I think all for the best. Most people I know did get their Oxford or Cambridge places. Just one didnt and they are looking into a remark.

well done everyone and hope all parents have a celebratory drink tonight

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 15/08/2024 19:36

DS got 3xA* and one A. He was briefly gutted about the A but then had a word with himself and is really happy. I really hope he finds his tribe at Imperial.

Pleasealexa · 15/08/2024 20:15

mynameisnotmichaelcaine, same results and same reaction as my ds. Once he knew he didn't have a Cambridge offer he focussed on his social life/hobbies so not really a surprise. He consistently said the 4th subject would be an A but It''s the first time he hasn't achieved the highest grade in any exam or academic competition so his ego was slightly bruised. However he has got over it and put with friends celebrating.

He is in to his Uni of choice so will have a great time.

Summertimer · 15/08/2024 20:33

Our DC didn’t get an interview at Oxford. No idea why, all good on UCAS form and he got 4 offers. He’s off to Kings College London - which he choose as a firm offfer over Durham. Got 2 A stars and 2 A

ShanghaiDiva · 15/08/2024 20:40

Dd was pooled, but not picked up by another college at Cambridge. Got 4 A stars today and off to Bath.

MirandaWest · 15/08/2024 20:55

@lifeturnsonadime so glad to hear about your DS - I seem to remember him being worried that exams hadn’t gone well

DD got AA A and off to Edinburgh to study history.
was torn between Edinburgh and Durham but for some reason preferred Edinburgh.

QuietFlame · 15/08/2024 22:42

Should have read A star A star A
Dont know what happened there!

Yes was convinced he’d messed one of them up, then had an issue with a major disruption in one of his exams (no fault of his own). He was so convinced it had gone wrong that we had the clearing list sorted for this morning & his dad took the day off work to man the phone lines!

Phew! 😊 and thank you for your kind wishes xx

Jaxx · 16/08/2024 14:43

So nice to see results from those not on the Y13 thread, particularly @lifeturnsonadime - I am so glad your son did so well in his exams given how worried he was ❤️.

My son got A star, A, A for his A levels so got his place at Durham! Less prestigious than Cambridge, but it will hopefully still give him some of the experience he was looking - a small historic City and the collegiate system. Seminars and longer terms will almost certainly suit him better as well. It was all for the best.

Lightsabre · 16/08/2024 15:11

Great news @lifeturnsonadime!

Some talks going on in our house about whether ds wants to consider a gap year. He did better than expected yesterday and got 4 x A Star. I think a gap year would do him good but I think he's keen to just start a degree and get on with his life. We'll back him either way.

PumpkinKnitter · 16/08/2024 23:45

Whew! Things feel as though they are moving at speed here! Spent the afternoon going through financial stuff with DD, helping her sort out bank accounts and her budget. Then she got her accommodation offer through (her favourite, so very happy!) and that is now accepted and sorted. She moves in three weeks tomorrow 😯. Off to do an IKEA shop on Monday.

Rollergirl11 · 17/08/2024 09:14

Also want to say congratulations to your DS @lifeturnsonadime and hope he is very happy at UCL.

DD got A* AA and is off to Exeter.

SeaofTranquility · 17/08/2024 11:30

Congratulations to all of your YPs, fabulous results and amazing universities. What a long year it has been with all its ups and downs. DC1 is off to Cambridge, DC2 was pooled but not fished out. DC2 has a place at a great RG uni but not sure they want to go. DC2 has 4 A stars - is any of your YP thinking about reapplying or applying to the other one with grades in hand? I'm at a loss what to say and not sure I can go through all that again with the possibility of being rejected again. Anyone got any thoughts, advice or experience? Thanks.

Jaxx · 17/08/2024 11:49

@SeaofTranquility Excellent result.

I definitely saw a thread here on wether people will be reapplying to Oxbridge here just before results- probably worth a quick search.

stoneysongs · 17/08/2024 17:20

Definitely no thoughts of reapplying here, DD got ÅÅÅA so it would be feasible, but she's really looking forward to UCL and hasn't mentioned Oxford for months. I'm not sure the course she originally applied for would be her thing now, there's a bit more flexibility at UCL and she likes having to do a language and doing a year abroad.

PotentialUCLmum · 17/08/2024 18:19

All firmed at UCL here… moving in slot booked etc. grades good enough to have another go at Oxford but doesn’t see the point in risking a place at UCL when there is a chance of being rejected after interview again. I agree. There’s breathing room to get paid work in term time and live a student life. I’m relieved I’m not schlepping to Oxford tbh it was a PITA journey 😂

Mine is going for a first at UCL. A first from a RG uni will be impressive in itself and stand them in good stead for a masters at O/C in 3 years time IMO.

This is mine’s first taste of rejection and tbf it has ignited a fire to become more competitive which is no bad thing…..

catmomof3 · 17/08/2024 18:26

My DD did mention how she could have been off to Oxford but is happy going UCL. Her plan is to try and get a 1st and go Oxford for her Masters. But we shall see

CoffeeMugShot · 17/08/2024 18:30

All set for UCL here too. 3 (and EPQ) A* and 1 A so would on paper be still in if reapplying at Cambridge, or Imperial - where interview clashed with violent food poisoning and didn't go well :-(

There's been a good few months of processing but DC excited about UCL now and I think actually will thrive there.

Congrats to all DC and all the best for their next stages, whatever they are

space99 · 17/08/2024 18:54

My DS super excited to go to UCL and was totally over his Cambridge rejection same day. Much prefers the niche course and absolutely loves the thought of living in London. Only 5 weeks till moving in weekend!

FebuarySmith · 17/08/2024 18:54

There’s a lot of incoming UCLers on here! DD getting ready for UCL also. Although is still abroad having been away for months. She’ll have 2 weeks to sort everything out.

Thanks so much. This is where I'd love them to end up, in a positive headspace. Maybe it's just gonna take some time.
