Imperial offers

Hi all,

DS had an interview for Oxford to read Maths, but didn't get an offer. He's really disappointed today but I know he'll bounce back. He has an offer from Warwick, which he loved, but he also really liked Imperial, and he hasn't heard from them yet. Does anyone know when they usually make their offers for Maths?

Thank you.

For where and what for though ?

Imperial College. DC applied for two courses, Maths and Joint Maths and Computing.

UpsideLeft · 23/03/2024 11:40

@User11010866 so one less A Level that's weird
Is he taking FM ? Not all schools do

UpsideLeft · 23/03/2024 11:41

Maybe it depends on what maths ?

DS is doing pure maths

FM, M and one from the other two. That's the standard IC requirements for Maths (G103).

Sjaja · 23/03/2024 14:58

I don't like the new imperial logo

Lightsabre · 25/03/2024 23:43

Ds finally has his Imperial offer and quite good one too; one A star and two A's. No stipulation for FM which is good as it's the one he struggles with the most. Decision time now and to compare costs, extra curricular etc.

Good luck to those still waiting.

UpsideLeft · 26/03/2024 01:04

@Lightsabre is this for maths ?

Lightsabre · 26/03/2024 07:32

@UpsideLeft, no it's for a single science subject. His friends seemed to get their maths offers around 2-3 weeks ago and I think they were mostly 2 A stars plus two A's (for those doing 4 A levels, mostly A star in maths and FM).

Lightsabre · 26/03/2024 07:34

Those boys were early entrants though and had sat MAT. A couple also have Oxbridge maths offers.

DS has decided on Imperial. He says to go to Warwick would be to remain in his comfort zone, and that going to university seems a good time to push yourself out of your comfort zone.

I am incredibly proud of him. Would love to keep in contact with others on here who decide on Imperial so that we can compare notes!

It's going to be an expensive year next year, with DD still in Oxford, and DS1 in London. Luckily I have a seven year gap to save up again before DS2's turn!

Hello @mynameisnotmichaelcaine and congrats to your DS!

My DS1 is highly likely to accept his Imperial offer, for physics.

Lightsabre · 28/03/2024 07:28

I think ds will accept his offer too and insure Warwick.

What are you all thinking re; accommodation options? We saw the South Ken halls and liked those but they were ££. Also I wonder if the international students get first dibs on those. We never saw Wilson Hse or the Acton halls so we need to visit those areas over Easter. The Acton campus is a lot cheaper and the rooms are nice from what I can see but it'll be a an having to travel in.

RockaLock · 28/03/2024 07:49

We are going to grit our teeth and pay up for the South Ken halls, I think.

It's painful, especially as we live in zone 6 and so DS could live at home and commute in - but what a rubbish experience that would be!

I think by the time you factor in travel costs, the cost of Acton/paddington vs south Ken is not that much different.

And we think that it would be nice for DS to live very close in his first year. Even the commute from Acton would be a PITA.

So that's our plan for the first year.

UpsideLeft · 28/03/2024 08:20

@mynameisnotmichaelcaine yes that's exactly DS thinkin

He'll apply for south Ken and Wilson halls and hopefully he'll get offered a room if not he's ok with North Acton after speaking to a student who lives there and they get very reduced travel from Imperial

It's not like his current school is on his doorstep and he doesn't get a lift. He has to walk at least 30 mins so distance is not really a factor for him at Imperial. He just wants to get on with his studies.

poetryandwine · 28/03/2024 09:52

Great news. Congratulations and best wishes to DS!

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 28/03/2024 12:23

We'll also grit teeth and pay for South Kensington I think. I assume DS will get in as he has autism, so is likely to be prioritised, as he will find it difficult to cope at first if he's a long way out.

Lightsabre · 28/03/2024 13:57

I don't know how true it is but I have heard that the South Ken flats might make it harder to make friends as there are cliques of mostly international students there. It's difficult to verify this. Ds is very happy to mix and is at a multi ethnic school but I don't want to spend £££ and he makes few friends or it's an environment that covertly excludes due to language, wealth or cultural barriers. We will have to visit all options I think and drill down.

UpsideLeft · 28/03/2024 15:56

It all depends where you're hearing it from @Lightsabre

If it's MN, Reddit, TikTok and the Student room as opposed to from students who are living there right now then you're never going to get a true picture

Lightsabre · 28/03/2024 16:33

Yes, I think we'll visit for ourselves and ask a few questions.

UpsideLeft · 29/03/2024 18:20

@Lightsabre yes do please update us because it's really hard to find anything out

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 29/03/2024 21:06

Well DS firmed Imperial today, with Warwick as his insurance. He seems relieved to have made a decision.

My DD is just completing her second year. She was in Wilson for halls for Yr 1 and loved it. Easy 25 minute walk through Hyde Park to campus.

UpsideLeft · 30/03/2024 01:01

@mynameisnotmichaelcaine that's exciting thats he's finally made his decision and gone for it

@Champagnecharleyismyname that's lovely to hear and makes us all feel a bit more relieved

UpsideLeft · 30/03/2024 15:17

DS has now firmed Imperial and put down Warwick as insurance

Sjaja · 30/03/2024 15:23

Imagine the imperial firm offer holders here end up meeting at university.

Just a thought
