Westminister got 61 Oxford con offers this year, I think it is a record.

Westminster recruits 80 super-talent 6th formers at 16+ internationally (most girls). That makes a huge difference.

Wow that’s an almost obscene amount. And the Cambridge offers still to come.

Puts an end to any argument that Oxford is deliberating not recruiting many public school or top private school students.

The school sixth form has been Coed for a while, this year is just an exceptional one.

Ridiculous. With success rates like that I feel for the unsuccessful candidates. The pressure of expectation and corresponding disappointment must be enormous. I hope they have suitable mental health support in place, just in case.

Because of bad Oxbridge offers last year. Quite a lot reapply this year (60 or more?) 15 are the gap year.

It could be, these schools with high oxbridge acceptance rate, private or grammar, will never tell you such information. They will only inform you the good (filter) news.

Oxford will be rubbing its hands at the thought of all those overseas fees…

Think fee status is blind for admission tutors? Obviously the tutor can tell from the application for the most.

But how does the AT tell between a UK fee students an International school from India and an International fee Indian student from a UK SS grammar?

Otherunichoices · 15/01/2024 09:46

Hi Rzim.

My DS is in his first year at LMH and loving it - the people, the tutors, the sport teams. It is less wealthy than other colleges so accommodation and formals are a bit more expensive. It is not one of the old colleges but it has a US university feel, lovely gardens and a boat house. Quite liberal/left-leaning in terms of widening participation, having a feminist library etc. but with a mix of state and private school students.

It is further out, yes. It depends what type of distance you are used to, when I have been to visit I find the 20-min walk from the station and across the parks very nice. There are buses from the centre.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have.

janecrookall45 · 15/01/2024 10:24

@Winning11 I’m not suggesting for one moment that these students are not deserving of their place, nor that an AT would give an offer on that basis - merely (tongue in cheek) that their fees will be welcome!
The highly selective route for clever overseas sixth formers via Westminster is well known and the school doesn’t suffer from the blind prejudice that is shown towards others.

goodbyestranger · 15/01/2024 10:30

Which schools are the target of blind prejudice then janecrookall45?

There are a lot of very clever pupils at Westminster. Maybe they're spread more thinly at other expensive schools?

janecrookall45 · 15/01/2024 10:56

@goodbyestranger Several contributors to this thread are happy to pontificate about Eton and Winchester, while clearly knowing nothing about them, apart from the nonsense pedalled in the press. Much of this is fuelled by anger against certain old boys, who left 40 years ago, who bear little resemblance to the other 99.9%. Students at these schools are, of course, privileged in their opportunities but so, equally, are those children who gain places at grammar schools, reducing hugely the opportunities for the rest.

Winning11 · 15/01/2024 10:58

@janecrookall45 pretty sure it is less than 40 years 😂I think the collateral damage will take another 40 years to repay.

janecrookall45 · 15/01/2024 11:08

@Winning11 Boris left Eton in 1983 so that is 40 years ago. It is a school of about 1400 boys, who cannot in any fairness be held responsible for him.

Winning11 · 15/01/2024 11:34

What about the current PM, the new Foreign Secretary, the 38 days Chancellor, to name but a few. How can public sure about 40 years is a clean cut?

janecrookall45 · 15/01/2024 11:44

@Winning11 i’m glad no one blames me for the faults of people who went to my school

Depends on the scale of damage? Sorry we derail this thread (or maybe not because it is talking about Oxford)

janecrookall45 · 15/01/2024 11:53

@Winning11 No it doesn’t. These boys are the same as anyone’s 18 year olds and deserve to be treated with the same respect as everyone else.

janecrookall45 · 15/01/2024 11:57

Were we still castigating the whole of Germany in 1985?

Winning11 · 15/01/2024 11:58

Agree but as I said it will take a long time because the scale of collateral damage unfortunately.
