New thread as Part 2 about to fill.

OP posts:

@Ianthanum It wasn't natural sciences I think it was more along the lines of PPE.

goodbyestranger · 29/11/2023 14:41

losingtheplot999 PPE is an Oxford only degree and there is no science requirement, merely a recommendation that maths is taken at A level.

I think rejection stories are often apocryphal and often tinted by feelings of being hard done by.

Rejection for DD from Oxford for medicine. She’s wasn’t that confident of getting an interview but is actually quite upset. I think the main source is feeling like she’s wasted all that BMAT prep to get a result that would have got her an interview at another uni. But that’s how the system works so not much to be done. Also frustration that she has 2 friends (both at v high achieving selective grammars) who got interviews with either the same BMAT/GCSE results or worse. I very naively thought that results were contextualised against your individual school but school type must come into it too (she’s at a middling private school with very little knowledge/support for med school applications). Which is a shame because had she known that, she probably wouldn’t have applied (and I certainly wouldn’t have encouraged it).

Sorry to hear this. Agree with PP that it would have been nothing to do with the friends being at high achieving grammars rather than independents. Were they both applying to Oxford too? Asking because Cambridge interview (and subsequently reject) many more than Oxford.

goodbyestranger · 29/11/2023 14:52

Oxford has more applicants per place for Medicine overall; it just culls more ruthlessly at an earlier stage.

Wolfofallstreets · 29/11/2023 15:53

Sadly, some people are hard done by when it comes to rejections - there's no magic indicator whereby some students "deserve" a place and some simply don't, there's a liminal space that many fall into. Big commiserations to anyone whose dc has had bad news, good luck to those of your dc going forward.

timetochangethering · 29/11/2023 15:57

Any Cambridge prospective students who have taken TMUA had an interview confirmation yet?

SnoopDogisamenace · 29/11/2023 16:40

Rejection for Oxford Maths. Was always a long shot but he wanted to give it a shot. DS is fine about it and probably more relaxed today than he’s been in weeks!

zen1 · 29/11/2023 16:59

DS has found out his interview is next week, but there is no one at his school to give him a practice interview. I guess his best bet is to look at YouTube videos to get an idea of the process.

HewasH2O · 29/11/2023 17:28

Don't worry @zen1 DD's school thought they were being helpful by arranging a practice interview with someone who has studied politics at Brookes before her PPE interview. They asked her about her hobbies and being head girl. I suggest that your DS simply practices talking through things out loud. They are more likely to be interested in his reasoning than whether or not he got the right answer.

hardhat · 29/11/2023 17:38

My son (applied for Maths at Oxford) hasn't heard either way. Should we be worried???

goodbyestranger · 29/11/2023 18:01

hardhat there's still a week to go. I know this sounds incredibly obvious - apologies - but the invite for DD2 sat in her Junk folder for two days. Worth your son checking if he hasn't already.

Wolfofallstreets of course there are plenty of hard cases but for an applicant to come up with his perfectly unexceptional background being the reason for a rejection is simply absurd.

DS just showed me some examples of maths questions online re Oxford

They're bizarre to say the least

RIPMatthewperry · 29/11/2023 18:16

@zen1 the Oxford admissions section on the website offers lots of advice on this issue including examples of an interview. Good luck to your DC

InvestedButNotOverinvested · 29/11/2023 18:16

@hardhat the interview invites are definitely not all out yet. DD is still waiting to hear (Physics). The college she has applied to actually have a page on their websites showing which invite decisions have been sent, and on what day. For this college, Maths and Physics are both still shown as “pending”. Assume we will hear in the next couple of days though, as they promise to let candidates know at least 5 days before the start of interviews for that subject.

Goodgriefken · 29/11/2023 19:04

Engineering interview here, all very happy!

Cx5 · 29/11/2023 19:27

@hardhat my son is still waiting for Oxford maths too, fingers crossed they will find out this week.
Like @InvestedButNotOverinvested said, you can check the college website. Maths hasn't been added to the list at my son's college yet.
Hope it's good news for all 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

hardhat · 29/11/2023 19:40

Thank you @Cx5 @InvestedButNotOverinvested and @goodbyestranger . I've told him to look in his spam folder (although had hoped he might have checked that himself already). I've looked on his college's website but can't see anything about interviews at all. I'll try to be patient... Good luck to all your children.

Sybill · 29/11/2023 21:47

Thanks for all your lovely comments and best of luck to all your DC in their interviews- hope they smash them! Looking forward to hearing about all the offers coming through in January.

DD actually fine now thankfully - it was her friends assuming that she’d get an interview as her stats were better than theirs that threw her a bit (and them too, poor girls felt awful). She’s back to prepping for her first interview in 2 weeks. She’s done really well to get 3 interviews so focussing on that to hopefully get a medicine offer - just need one!!

UniDaysAcoming · 29/11/2023 21:54

DS got his rejection email yesterday for Oxford. So that's that.
He seems fine as he has an offer from Warwick that he liked.

All the best to those who got interviews! Hope it goes well

UniDaysAcoming · 29/11/2023 21:55

It was for Maths

Maggiethecat · 29/11/2023 22:07

catmomof3 · 28/11/2023 18:27

@lifeturnsonadime She's fine now lol, said she's glad she knows how the interviews will work now but she's going school tomorrow to check her webcam can be used as for some schools it's blocked for students. She's been told she can do the interviews at home but we don't have a printer and she wants to print out the pre-reading instead of using her ipad, but we shall see what tomorrow brings.

@catmomof3 - Dd wants to print her pre reading too and we no longer have a printer (also think it could be a faff if a printer was messing about).

we’ve encouraged her to do the reading, make bullet points - hopefully it will be fine.

Maggiethecat · 29/11/2023 22:23

Just a thought here, if for some reason the wi fi konks out I’m presuming there’ll be some allowances made to try to reschedule? 😱

Dafrty · 30/11/2023 00:24

I’d create a data hotspot on my phone and just switch to that if the wifi died.

Silkiefloof · 30/11/2023 01:09

Sorry to hear of the rejections and congratulations on the offers. DD had the pre interview thing today, very easy but said almost none of it was her subject but it's a smaller one.

Mirrormeback · 30/11/2023 02:01

losingtheplot999 · 29/11/2023 09:26

DS2 had a school friend who also applied for Cambridge medicine but didn't get an offer. The reason being about some applicants not being the right fit because of upbringing. This didn't make any sense as he hadn't had an out of the ordinary upbringing. I think a lot of this process just doesn't make any sense at all.

What year was this ?
