I wanted to get a news thread ready for everyone as you wake up in the Uk.

We are settling into a routine of talking to DS on FaceTime on Sunday mornings after our breakfast, which is early pm his time. It is so nice to see his smile and catch up on how he is doing. I know at some point he will have a bad day, but so far he seems to be doing so well, I am ridiculously proud.

Hope you all have a good week!

DD coming home today! Moving out if halls etc. That’s the first year pretty much over. Has a few essays to do and going back for a week of ‘end of year’ parties. Hasn’t that just flown by?

Gosh that really is early! Bet it will be lovely to have her home, even if it takes a little adjustment on both sides.

DS has just FaceTimed me, apparently they've been taught sone new stuff today which they weren't expecting. He said quite a few probably weren't expecting it either as there were hardly any in the Lecture.

crumblingschools · 10/05/2024 17:24

DS finished a few weeks ago! He stayed on at the flat for a couple of weeks to use it as a base for travelling to other places. Came home for a few days and has now gone back to pack up his stuff

NotDonna · 10/05/2024 17:49

I’m not too sure where we are going to put everything - we are going to suddenly have extra sets of so much stuff as DD1 also moving back home for summer as her 2 flatmates are moving to London - she’s a LOT of stuff including a large chest of drawers, desk, chair and soooo many pots & pans. Their bedrooms already have furniture and desks! We need a spare apartment!! I’m a bit if a minimalist so this will be interesting!

DS has been on a field trip to the Lake District. Think he has a few exams in the next two weeks and then will probably be coming back although his room is his until mid to late June I think

MargaretThursday · 10/05/2024 20:05

DD's collecting her stuff on Saturday. I have no idea where the stuff is going to go until she moves into her house. I suggested she tidied her room. Apparently the idea was enough to exhaust her...

ZittiEBuoni · 10/05/2024 20:26

Dd performed her end of year recital today and seems very happy with how it went. German exam was also fine. She's staying at least another week, probably coming back next weekend but leaving about half of her stuff in halls as she doesn't have to be out for good till early July. Crazy to think that the first year is drawing to an end already.

We need a laughing response as well as the thanks!

Thoughts and prayers for your DD @MargaretThursday, I hope she recovers from her exhaustion soon

🤣🤣🤣

Even saying the word "tidy" is enough...

MirandaWest · 11/05/2024 23:17

i can’t remember exactly when DSs exams are but I think he has one next week. Last night and much of today he was in the library….

AnneOfCleavage · 12/05/2024 08:12

DD starts her just over a month long 5 day a week school placement next week so lectures and seminars are finished. Still needs to hand in a couple of assignments but the end is in sight.

In other news she went in the sea yesterday for the first time this year - it was freezing she said!

Ball on Friday and it starts at 5pm at the other campus and DD is at a school two bus rides away so she's guessing 7pm for her. @MargaretThursday is your DD going? Don't know why they didn't do a Saturday knowing a huge chunk are on placement.

I hope everyone managed to see the sun yesterday ☀️

CadyEastman · 12/05/2024 12:41

@MargaretThursday my DD seems to think I'm swearing at her if I ever dare to utter the unmentionable word

@MirandaWest My DS' first exam is the last week of the month. I'm still waiting for the panic to set in. He's out walking today in the Peak District with Flatmate.

@AnneOfCleavage hope your DD's placement goes well and she has a ball at her ball Wink

Kelta · 12/05/2024 13:54

Ds seems to be having a term of fun this term. He does have exams but he isn’t even vaguely stressed about them
and only has to pass to go through to next year. He has another seven weeks to go yet so I’m really surprised to hear of people who have finished already? Which universities finish early like that?

lastdayatschool · 12/05/2024 16:12

@Kelta I don't think (m)any universities will have formally finished yet.

It's just a lot of them have finished teaching, and consequently, a lot of students don't see the point in hanging around campus if they don't have, or have finished their exams.

My DS finishes exams next Wednesday but, given his hall is paid for until mid June, we encouraged him to stay for 2-3 weeks to have some fun and do some exploring of the local area in (hopefully) good weather (he's at Exeter) than he'll get at home in NI

Most of DS' exams are in June as well.

KittyMcKitty · 12/05/2024 17:52

My dd (Durham) finished last Wednesday- term finishes in 22 June. She seems very busy with upcoming social stuff and just having a lovely time in Durham. Only a couple of her friends have finished so far.

MargaretThursday · 13/05/2024 17:59

@AnneOfCleavage
Dd decided not to go to the ball because she's got a late night booked on Thursday and a concert (her old Orchestra) she's going to with friends on Saturday.

ZittiEBuoni · 31/05/2024 20:56

Good evening, long time no see Grin.

I have a tearful dd tonight. She has been having nothing but trouble with the Bristol uni tech systems and now has just received an automated email informing her that she has a mark of 0 for an assignment she hasn't submitted. The thing is, she HAS submitted it, and has a correctly dated email confirmation to prove it.

Getting sick of this - very similar happened with her choices for second year specialisms so now she doesn't know what subjects she will end up with in September. For 9K a year at an RG university I do feel she shouldn't be dealing with this. Grr.

tribpot · 31/05/2024 22:08

Sympathies, @ZittiEBuoni - uni tech does seem to be absolutely dreadful, doesn't it? I hope she can get the zero mark sorted out. What happened with her second year choices, did she submit them and then later get a notification to say she hadn't?

CadyEastman · 31/05/2024 22:17

That sounds like a lot of unnecessary stress. Your poor DD!

ZittiEBuoni · 31/05/2024 22:30

Yes, @tribpot , she submitted the choices then was told weeks later by her tutor that she should have sent them in because now she was just going to get randomly allocated into groups with spaces. She told him what happened but is now going to have to wait until the beginning of next term to get it sorted. The maddening thing is that she always gets confirmation emails. What the hell is going wrong? Gah.

Funnily enough we had a lot of issues with SFE too @MTistheDB ...can't wait for the next round with them...
