Hi all. I thought I’d make a new thread as the countdown one is filling up.
Results day is here and I’m sure we will all value each others support, today and for the next stage of their journeys.

GREAT NEWS @stilldumdedumming Of all the hurdles to overcome, you really don't want Admin to be one which is where we are now.

So pleased for your DS

AfingeroffudgeisNOTenough · 18/08/2023 17:30

Delighted for you and your DS @stilldumdedumming . Still
rooting for your DD @SlightlyJaded - what a long haul this is - it just feel like the last 36 hours has been the longest ever.

Hi @isthatmyage, I have no direct experience of KPMG school leaver apprentice entry but have had DC in similar situations in previous years. I assume KPMG HR have asked for electronic copy of results print out given by college or school?

Assuming DD has met the grade requirements, confirmation should be pretty quick if your DD had applied for an apprenticeship not linked to a uni eg L7 ACA or a L4.

If the apprenticeship is linked to a uni provider (eg often the case with Digital & Tech Solutions L6), then the uni may possibly also need to confirm behind the scenes via KPMG. If your DD has concerns then a polite email to her HR contact at KPMG would be perfectly fine, I'd have thought. Hope that helps.

@PerpetualOptimist thank you for your feedback, it's Audit so not attached to a Uni. Has sent over proof of grades yesterday then this morning (1st time not clear enough). They said BBB but DD got BBC (6 points off, having a recheck). KPMG website says for Audit 104 Ucas points and she has 112 so hoping ok. Have read elsewhere that they generally still want those they have offered as their own recruitment process is so rigorous. She sent an email earlier if any news and received an out of office back (!). Have resigned to waiting until Monday...also looking for accommodation at her insurance Uni which have offered her a place. It's going to be a long weekend!

It annoys me to see that students who have missed their offers by a fraction are having to grovel to a university in the hope of getting the place - losing our on accommodation in the meantime. Our having to scramble do a clearing place again with little chance of accommodation.
Being offered expensive accommodation miles away.
Don't forget the students are paying a fecking fortune in tuition fees for a few hours contact time - that is when the lecturers are not on strike, working to rule out refusing to mark work so students cannot graduate get jobs or move on to further study.

This!

TJsAunt · 18/08/2023 17:46

@stilldumdedumming congratulations to your ds - bad time to have to do grown up admin but am sure they'll be a little more savvy because of it?

DrMadelineMaxwell · 18/08/2023 17:58

Really feeling for those still being left hanging or having to jump through hoops for their next steps. And sorry to hear of some of the knocks that some have had with grades. I know some of dds friendship group have done really well, others well enough and a few with Ds and Us in their grades.

Our last semi stressful thing was waiting on accommodation which has come through and deposit has been paid. Date for moving in is 16th Sept. Not long now at all..

For schools that have in person results ... Do the teachers actually know the results before the kids, I mean someone has to put the results sheets in the envelopes!?

Yes. We know the day before and personally I highlight students that may need extra guidance and support

Piggywaspushed · 18/08/2023 18:17

Ermm, no. You shouldn't! Only SL get results the day before. Every other teacher should not see results until 8am.

Piggywaspushed · 18/08/2023 18:18

The exams officer puts results in envelopes.

Piggywaspushed · 18/08/2023 18:18

SLT, sorry.

angela99999 · 18/08/2023 18:27

I worked as an administrator in a university and can only imagine what chaos the marks have caused for admissions tutors.

If there are less students with top marks then students with lower marks will get places, but people must realise that more places are offered than exist as universities know that some students will not make the grade, even in a "normal" year.

Szboox · 18/08/2023 18:28

We are still waiting here too. The wait is excruciating. Phoned twice today, to be told to phone back again tomorrow.

SlightlyJaded · 18/08/2023 18:32

@Szboox who are you waiting on? Maybe we can keep each other going! God knows I am refreshing the UCAS hub more often than I did for Beyonce Tickets!

Waiting on MMU, what about you? I keep refreshing , then logging back in etc. I just feel utterly exhausted by it all.

Are you replying to me?

SlightlyJaded · 18/08/2023 18:39

@Szboox Also MMU! Verbal offer yesterday morning, followed by email confirming provisional offer. DD put it as her choice on UCAS Hub and nothing... tumbleweed. Checked this morning and there was an email saying "we are considering your applicatinon" which sent DD into a bit of a spin so she called to ask whether her offer was in jeopardy, and we are just getting lots of "just wait' and 'we are working over the weekend' etc....

We then got the invitation to to do the clearing tours (we've gone for the 30th) but I'm loathe to book trains/day off work etc without the fucking Hub updating. Also DD now exhausted from her disappointment and rallying yesterday and not even able to post a second option (that she doesn't have) because the MMU application is sat there. She had got her head around MMU but is now feeling like the ground is shaky. It's shit.

LaDeeDa123 · 18/08/2023 18:44

@SlightlyJaded are you happy to say which subject she’s looking at or would you prefer not to?

If you have an email
offer I would relax a little. The Hub updates are taking a while as universities are obviously really busy. I’ve got one student who has been waiting nearly 40 hours for an update on the hub.

Motherland2624 · 18/08/2023 18:46

We have received this from Plymouth
he has already booked his ucat again
alot of his friends are in same position with their predicted and they fact they have worked so hard it’s devastating
im keeping a close eye on him I’m not sure how long we will be waiting for a final answer

Awh your poor DD. We’ve not even had emails from them. Just people on the phone saying wait or ring back tomorrow . As the course is in clearing, I just get the feeling they are waiting to fill the course with people with better grades. But keeping us waiting incase! ( he didn’t get the grades, but they’ve not rejected )

mizu · 18/08/2023 12:28

Edinburgh. Fingers crossed as if it is £8000 she will not be going!

One of my DC’s is a recent Edinburgh student. It is so expensive for halls and then for flats after the first year. Airbnb, doesn't help.
However, the bonus of Edinburgh is loads of part-time jobs in hospitality. My DC had to work to be able to add to his loan and my funding.

SlightlyJaded · 18/08/2023 18:56

DD's course is Human Geography.

I have been transparent on this thread around the DISASTER that is her grades so anyone will note that they are below the published grades, and this is what is worrying me. She repeated the grades three times in the clearing call and they made the offer. They said "you have made the threshold we have set". They then followed up with an email confirming the provisional place and she spoke to someone from the department about the course. So far, so clear.

But her application on the hub is stagnant and my fear is that they are waiting for people with better grades to come along and fill the places and will then fob her off with some excuse as to why they are withdrawing the offer. But in DDs head - she has a firm offer (actually in my head too) and I just don't think I can cope with this being withdrawn after the hellish disappointment she has already contended with. Because she is already distraught and exhausted, she has made peace with the MMU place and I just don't think either of us has the gumption to find something even further away from her original plans...

I feel worse today than yesterday. We can't move forward. We can't look at accomodation and DD doesn't have the energy or motivation to look at other clearing options because she believes she has an offer that she can work with.

SlightlyJaded · 18/08/2023 18:57

Thanks @LawfulSearch that is a bit reassuring. And we'll take any positives at this point!

LawfulSearch · 18/08/2023 18:37

Yes. Unless you are a select band of SLT (which you may be, so apols if you are) you should never see results before 8 am.

DailyMaui · 18/08/2023 19:20

stilldumdedumming · 18/08/2023 17:26

@tribpot thank you. Yes I'm sure it's not representative although he has been working for a different uni in the same field and they were shocked and not that complimentary.

You're right it probably isn't very common. Perhaps I should have said it's not unique. He's hardly slept. I'm going to pick him up from the station as he set off at 4 this morning to get to Sussex open day.

Big Phew!!!!

Strength to any that are still going. My instinct is that the pace might slow a bit in clearing now as it settles a little.

Ps I agree it needs an overhaul. It can't do anyone any good.

what great news - so happy for you both
