Lancaster University Colleges

DS has accepted an offer for Lancaster and from my understanding he has to put a preferred college when accommodation opens up.

if any of you have got any info about the different colleges from a student experience (rather than the website) I’d be very grateful. And do students tend to get their preferred college or is it more random than that.

He’s not really a party person, if that makes a difference.

Thank you.

Bowland is also one of the biggest colleges

Bowland looks great @WednesdaysPlaits - thanks for posting. Can you get catered in Bowland out of interest? Told that it is more socialable to go catered?

WednesdaysPlaits · 16/04/2023 14:32

You can be catered in Bowland but only in the en suite rooms. They are smaller flats.

Four colleges do it. County, Bowland Lonsdale and cartmel. You can then eat in one of four places on campus, marketplace in county, the deli just off Alex square, Fylde bar or down in Cartmel. You effective get credits and eat where you fancy. As a result I’m not sure it’s necessarily more sociable (although I’m sure the kids eat a wider range of food).

what will your ds be studying?

Yes Bowland looks very nice. DS said a lot applied to Lancaster from his school and none of them got their first choice College but as said upthread they all like the College they have ended up in.

Honestly, every person thinks their college is the best college. Colleges have a really strong community

My DS has had an offer too and we have been watching YouTube videos and going on a website called The Student Room where there are hints and tips. My son is social, but hardly drinks. He likes sports and listing to music and live music,

If he's into sport then Fylde has the sports bar but Bowland would put him slightly closer to the sports centre (although there isn't much in it)

All colleges are good colleges. He'll have an amazing time.

All apart from the studio flats and the townhouses (county and Grizedale) have a cleaning service in kitchens and the shared bathrooms. They do floors, work surfaces etc. They don’t do bedrooms and they don’t do en suite bathrooms. Townhouses get no cleaning at all even though their bathrooms are shared.

If your accommodation gets into a state you get a warning and then fines are imposed.

So if you want a cleaner you need to avoid county and Grizedale townhouses.

Just wanted to correct this message. DS is in a Grizedale townhouse this year and contrary to some of the official information they do have a cleaner but only in the kitchen. The cleaners don't do the bathrooms in the townhouses.

Apologies for reviving an old(ish) thread, but in the townhouses with 12 bedrooms and 6 showers (Grizedale I think), do the students tend to share a bathroom with the same student, or is it a general free for all? Sharing with one known other strikes me as a bit nicer.

they share with the room next door. Theres also a toilet downstairs. They split the townhouses so that your bathroom mate is the same sex (same sex even if transgender)

WednesdaysPlaits · 16/01/2026 15:59

there are townhouses in Grizedale and in County.

maeveiscurious · 16/01/2026 17:38

My dc is in Grizedale and loves it and is not a party person. They are involved in sports and committees for the societies it’s been a great Uni experience
