Lancaster University Colleges

DS has accepted an offer for Lancaster and from my understanding he has to put a preferred college when accommodation opens up.

if any of you have got any info about the different colleges from a student experience (rather than the website) I’d be very grateful. And do students tend to get their preferred college or is it more random than that.

He’s not really a party person, if that makes a difference.

Thank you.

@Mumoftwoboysaged4and5 fantastic, thanks for the recommendation.

😀very true! I loved my time at fylde

Fylde till I die. I'm Fylde Till I Die. I know I am I'm sure I am I'm Fylde till I die.

My first year may have overlapped with you final year - I was in the salmon pink brick wall rooms prison cells when most of Lancaster University was still all fields. 25 to a corridor, 50 to a floor sharing 6 toilets 6 showers and 2 kitchens Grin

Some friends of mine travelled to get the gallon challenge plaques from the walls when they demolished the old Fylde Bar.

Rummikub · 20/03/2023 21:50

oh wow!

I remember going back after they’d demolished it :(

Block 1 perfectly situated to see the bar. Too easy!

My DS is going to the Lancaster offer holder day this weekend with his mate who also has an offer. Any hints or tips?

They are at school in London so we're literally just telling them to go to Euston after school on Friday and get on the train to Lancaster. They are both 18 and both staying in the on site rooms. Both going to the Management school.

I'm slightly regretting not going with them now as my concern is that they might just mooch around kicking a ball about and wandering around aimlessly. Are the days quite structured/organised?

How do they get from the train station at about 8 pm to the uni?

DeathWinsAGolfish · 23/03/2023 17:30

@SmartHome DD has received her itinerary for the day.

Not sure how far the station is from the uni, we're driving up tomorrow and staying over too, hoping to get there in fewer than six hours...

Rummikub · 23/03/2023 17:41

Think a taxi from the station might be easier. Campus is about 3-4 miles from Lancaster.
Management school was at the edge of campus.

PerpetualOptimist · 23/03/2023 19:16

Hi @SmartHome , don't fret unduly; transport options from Lancaster station may well be covered off in the joining instructions. A good learning opportunity for your DS to remember to read all such emails thoroughly!

If not, a quick google reveals Lancaster Uni website also has the info; get your DS to do that, though; they will be operating independently within months, so this is good practice.

Whenever I have attended events at Lancaster Uni, with or without DC, all has been well organised and welcoming. Hope that gives some reassurance.

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 23/03/2023 20:07

There's frequent buses from directly the station and buses from Lancaster centre to the university several times an hour during the day. You can't miss when you have reached campus so they just need to get on any bus saying 'university' and they will get there. Depending on which bus they may get a tour of Lancaster as well.

when you come out of the train station it's very easy to work out which way you need to go.

the whole (very small) city is basically geared round students

Matildapower · 23/03/2023 20:10

DS was in County, in the town houses. 12 to a house, 4 on each floor. He loved it, plus he was doing Law and it’s right next to the Law department

There’s a taxi rank right outside

beenrumbled · 23/03/2023 20:14

@SmartHome lots of buses to university from Lancaster. Or a taxi.

DD is first year Lonsdale and loves the university and her course. She is in a show flat do often shows groups round.

RandomMess · 23/03/2023 20:45

Thanks for the heads up it's going to be a busy weekend on the roads!

Unless they've suddenly gone there are temporary traffic lights from the M6 to the campus, it's been rather hellish 🙄😭

SmartHome · 24/03/2023 11:26

Thanks all. Apparently he will figure it out and we are doing his head in 😜

Got to let them get on with it right?

RandomMess · 24/03/2023 11:48

Yep!!

He'll be fine

Chittering · 24/03/2023 15:01

He will be fine. If he heads down to town from the station, there is a bus stop outside Primark, he needs to catch the 100 or 1a takes about 20 minutes. I have just been this morning to nip in on my son. Was very easy!

DeathWinsAGolfish · 26/03/2023 16:01

How did the day go for everyone?

We drove back today in a record 5 hours, it remains top of DDs list. We're just looking at the fastest way on the train back to the Southwest.

Now she needs to look at the colleges, any top tips will be gratefully received!

TheFTrain · 26/03/2023 17:04

Hi, my son's in Bowland in his first year. He's self catering and has a bedroom with ensuite. He shares his flat with 3 others. He's not really into parties etc so the fact it's a quiet building is good for him. He doesn't really socialise with the people in his flat but has made friends with people on his course. Bowland was his first choice. I have no idea why he chose it to be honest, I think he mainly closed his eyes, stuck a pin on the map and that's what came up.

One thing I would say is all colleges except Bowland had a uni representative who helped everyone get to know each other during freshers week. This didn't bother my son as he made sure he went to as many socials as he could but it's something to think about if your kid finds it hard to socialise and needs an extra push.

It's a really lovely uni by the way. We're so pleased he chose it and he loves being there.

Matildapower · 26/03/2023 17:06

When you arrive on the first day the college reps all stand on the big roundabout waving placards and flags ‘County till I die’

Rowgtfc72 · 26/03/2023 17:15

Buses in Lancaster very regular to the uni.
I was at S martins college in the 90s ( been back many times since). Uni bookshop was far superior to our supplies portacabin and graduation was held at the Uni.
Lancaster is a brilliant place to study.

Also county til I die Smile

Spudlet · 26/03/2023 21:41

I’m far too old to be able to share any useful college information (Grizedale is the best, obviously) but this thread is making me very nostalgic… hope all the DC heading up to Lancaster have a great few years 😊

As a 2016 grad here's a basic guide (from my exp may have changed).

Party = Grizedale
Sporty = Lonsdale
Quiet = Furness, Bowland
Out of the way = Cartmel
Centre of the action = Grizedale/County
Pub lover = Fylde

I'm county til I die (but my first choice was Grizedale). I also was in the postgrad college next to Cartmel and Lon and there's not loads going on there. Lots of older students.

If you need/want parking for a car it's hard to come by but best options are Cartmel, Lonsdale and County.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 26/03/2023 21:50

Oh there's pendle too which is quite central on campus but I can't remember having much interaction with any Pendles so can't help

IDontWantToBeAPie · 26/03/2023 21:51

Also there are college chants they'll learn. Some faves are

'Grizedale boys have STIs'

And

'County girls, we are here, shag your men and drink your beer'.

Take from that what you will 😂

DeathWinsAGolfish · 27/03/2023 06:14

@IDontWantToBeAPie (I don't even like gravy!) love your usernameSmile

Thanks for this, DD, is less like to want to go partying, and we were shown the en suites in Cartmel which DD liked, I know they're all pretty much the same.

I think she's is mostly concerned about the distance from home, but the course looks amazing and so she is driven by this.
