Lancaster University Colleges

DS has accepted an offer for Lancaster and from my understanding he has to put a preferred college when accommodation opens up.

if any of you have got any info about the different colleges from a student experience (rather than the website) I’d be very grateful. And do students tend to get their preferred college or is it more random than that.

He’s not really a party person, if that makes a difference.

Thank you.

What is the position in subsequent years of your degree please? Do students rent in Lancaster or stay on campus? If Lancaster, are there student blocks or is it all private house rentals and is it a scramble to find property like in Durham and Bristol?

You rent in Lancaster and get the bus up to the college.

There are a number of student blocks but here are more expensive than regularl landlord HMOs.

There are also a number of student housing companies to help.

There are some shifty landlords in Lancaster though just to warn you.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 28/03/2023 10:04

It can be a bit of a scramble to get housing but I've never known anyone not be able to get one.

“County girls go home alone do dah do dah” 🤣

that was 2006 so I’m sure the chants are a bit more PC these days 😃

If anything they're worse 😂

The sugar house 😂

Also when I was at fylde I remember i couldn’t decide what to order so the man behind the bar suggested a ‘rumbaba’. I’m pretty sure that’s what he said- basically rum (brandy?) in a chocolate milk shake. Can anyone else remember if that was a thing or a one off?? I’ve googled to no avail! It was tasty though.

Rumchata?

RandomMess · 28/03/2023 10:45

There is a lot of private purpose built student accommodation in town (and more has building approval) plus many HMO.

The bus service mentioned is frequent and incorporates 2 main routes. They do get crowded and staff shortages with the bus company are causing issues but the uni regularly meets/liaises with them etc. Bus pass is quite pricey though.

There is always the option to get fit an cycle. Car parking on campus for students is a no go except in extenuating circumstances such as Disabled Badge Holder.

Reading this thread makes me feel a little emotional. DD graduates this year and has had a fabulous experience at Lancaster. She loved it from arriving on campus for the open day and although she's ready to move on, will really miss it.
She chose a County townhouse which was perfect in the end as her first year was 2020-21 so her 'household' for COVID purposes was large. She's stayed in the same house in Bowerham for second and third years.
It's a great university and a great city - small enough not to be overwhelming but large enough to be anonymous if you need to be.
On an entirely personal note, we'll miss the glorious drive over the A66 to drop off/pick up!

Rumchata?

I’ve just googled rumchata but I don’t think it’s that- I don’t remember any cinnamon or Kahlua. Maybe bartender just made it up!

I didn’t go to Lancaster Uni but this sounds very like a drink we had in Spain. They called it Lumumba. Basically, rum and chocolate milk.

Rummikub · 28/03/2023 21:53

Oh my.! It’s Lumumba!
I must have had that so many times. The name has been bugging me for weeks - thank you Bettyboo.

I still can’t drink vodka orange after an unfortunate incident in fylde bar.

DS heard back from St Andrews today and its a no so he's about to firm Lancaster.

I hope he isn’t too disappointed about about St Andrews. DS was disappointed not to get his first choice, but the offer holder day was great and he’s really happy with Lancaster - I think it’s a much better fit for him too.

There’s a parents Facebook group that I’ve found really helpful.

@DeathWinsAGolfish we seem to be in the same position as you and your DD. How long did it take you to get to the offer holders day in the end?

DeathWinsAGolfish · 13/04/2023 08:35

@BrendaLee
DD had her offer holder day back in March, she had a choice of four dates and this was the final for her subject. I think she received the invite in January.

Violetparis · 13/04/2023 08:41

Does anyone know when/how you apply for accommodation at Lancaster Uni ?

WednesdaysPlaits · 13/04/2023 08:53

They don't do accommodation until June. You basically chose a type of accommodation and put preferences for colleges.

WednesdaysPlaits · 13/04/2023 08:54

They send you an email to apply for accommodation in June if you have firmed.

Violetparis · 13/04/2023 09:10

Thanks WednesdaysPlaits. My daughter is undecided between Leeds and Lancaster as to which will be her firm choice. Sounds like if it's her insurance choice and she needs it she'd have to wait until August.

WednesdaysPlaits · 13/04/2023 09:33

Yes you can only apply if you've firmed. They don't guarantee accommodation if they're your insurance (although they do have lots of accommodation and it isn't usually an issue).

WednesdaysPlaits · 13/04/2023 09:36

But Lancaster is the best university and she should firm Lancaster - and Lonsdale is the best college ;)

RideACockHorseToSunburyCross · 13/04/2023 09:47

County's fucking magic, it wears a magic hat, and when I saw the County, I said I fancy that 💪🏼

WednesdaysPlaits · 13/04/2023 10:02

County boys they are so fit, and most of the Lonsdale girls have had a little bit!

WednesdaysPlaits · 13/04/2023 10:03

We like our chanting at Lancaster! Grin

WednesdaysPlaits · 13/04/2023 10:33

BF has just reminded me of her favourite

"Lonsdale Lionesses see our claws, we've shagged all our boys and we're coming for yours!"

RideACockHorseToSunburyCross · 13/04/2023 11:10

Cartmel women look like men, doo dah doo dah

(That one wouldn't be allowed today 🙈)
