@petitebleu - so sorry to hear about your DS. I hope that some time out over Christmas may help to give him some space and time to think about his next steps.

@Juja - we'll have similar next year. DS1 has a long lease as Chemistry 4th year is in labs and has longer terms. DD will be using his fist as 'storage' between terms.

DS1 has finished '3rd year finals' and will be home at the weekend. He has a week before his internship starts in the City

DD starts her exams (Medicine) on Friday and will be home next weekend.

I'm really pleased that being together in Oxford has brought the pair of them together this year. I hope DS2, who starts in the US in August, remains close to them both.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 14/06/2023 07:30

DD1 can stay in her Cambridge college until the end of June. The French Masters is going ahead, so she's gone into London for her visa interview and meeting friends. Doing lots of socialising, as her exams finished two weeks ago. Getting very excited about the three balls she's attending + other events. She's expecting to be given a predicted grade and final grade of 2:1 as that's what's she's always got.

ofteninaspin · 14/06/2023 07:56

DS has finished his finals too. He is staying on in college until graduation as he has two May balls to attend and Varsity. All his friends are still in college too and they having a brilliant time after all the stress of exams.

mutterphore · 14/06/2023 08:47

Lovely to hear that those who've finished exams are enjoying themselves now. @Ironoaks I didn't know a Year Book was a 'thing' and hope all colleges are doing this as it's such a nice idea.

@CinnamonJellyBeans I'm glad you hear that your DD1's Masters can go ahead. Has she heard anything from her faculty about when her exams might actually be marked? Is it possible that some exams and dissertations will never be marked at all?

ofteninaspin · 14/06/2023 12:29

A year book was a thing last year at DD’s Oxford college. Haven’t heard about one at Cambridge but DS isn’t overly communicative!

ofteninaspin · 14/06/2023 12:30

Very good news re mini JellyBean’s Master’s course.

Ironoaks · 14/06/2023 14:09

@CinnamonJellyBeans that is great news about her masters course

Malbecfan · 14/06/2023 16:28

Nice to hear of the successes. Less nice to hear of those DC being chucked out of their accommodation. That's poor.

It's strange with DD not having exams. She is busy this week with May Bumps - having won blades in the Lent event, her crew has a lot to live up to. Then she's off to her first conference where she is showing something, probably a poster session. She rarely sends more than a heart or x on a message so I genuinely don't know. DD2 meanwhile finished her course a couple of weeks ago and is waiting for her results but is confident she'll be accepted onto the Masters year. She has struggled to find an internship but the cafe where she worked between Japanese semesters has welcomed her back with open arms and a pay rise, so she's happy.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 14/06/2023 16:39

Thanks for the good wishes. It was a relief to find out it's still going ahead.

Exams/dissertations will be marked eventually, but I cannot see the logistics of how they can make people who went on strike go back and do the work that they didn't get paid for?

Catsrcool69 · 14/06/2023 17:13

DD finished her Finals last Friday and is now getting used to the idea of having nothing to do except relax. It's taking her a while after working so hard for so long! But she seems to be enjoying herself.

I share pp's concerns about whether these exams will ever get marked. I feel they have to, but how and when? I've emailed the Vice Chancellor 's office again asking for more information about their plans but have had no response. Also trued to engage my MP but getting nothing back since they undertook to raise the issue with the Dept of Education. It feels like noone really cares at all about these young people.

PermanentTemporary · 14/06/2023 20:23

I really can't believe how tough this year has had it from first to the very last. They all deserve to move on to what they want to do, and I hope interviewers will see what they've been through as proof of resilience and problem solving.

Glued to cam.fm now until the Bumps are over. I've got to stop looking at the provisional results though, gave me a funny turn.

Panicmode1 · 15/06/2023 15:20

I'm loving the completely inept CamFM bumps coverage! DS bumped yesterday so is hoping to do so again today....but I will wait for the official results, rather than rely on the non commentary commentary. I have to commend the enthusiasm tho 🤣

@Panicmode1 I just checked the results online. DD was most hacked off that the boats in front of her bumped each other so they had a huge amount to make up. Yesterday was a row-over but she is confident of bumping today.

Panicmode1 · 15/06/2023 16:19

DS bumped again today....so he will be chuffed. Hope your DD has a positive day today too @Malbecfan .

I was really hoping to whizz up to Cambridge for Saturday, but with DS's siblings needing lifts to various things, and the 'baby' (he's 13 😂)having to be collected from the station after a trip to Kew Gardens, I don't think I can get there and back in time - so it will have to be a trip for next year!

pantjog · 15/06/2023 18:03

Aaah lucky you having the fun of bumps! None of mine rowed this term.

pantjog · 15/06/2023 18:07

But DD2, with her college choir, sang in front of the King today. Pretty cool!

HewasH20 · 15/06/2023 18:13

Exciting @pantjog

Malbecfan · 15/06/2023 18:44

@Panicmode1 DD has just texted. She bumped very early today. She claims never to have been bumped...

Panicmode1 · 15/06/2023 18:51

Yay, well done @Malbecfan 's DD! DS said that his boat is the only one in college who can now get blades...fingers crossed!

That's very cool @pantjog!!

Malbecfan · 15/06/2023 20:40

Great news @pantjog .

@Panicmode1 DD got blades in Lent bumps. Indulgent grandpa paid for it as it's not cheap. Nice photo of DD & her crew with the Master of her college as a result.

PermanentTemporary · 15/06/2023 20:54

@pantjog what a lovely thing to do for your dd.

Ds bumped again today. Very unlikely to tomorrow. I'll be watching him attempt to catch my old college, and hoping he does.

beeswain · 16/06/2023 06:27

It's ds's last undergraduate paper this morning. I'm incredibly proud. For those that remember he had a difficult first year and I could not persuade him to go back after lockdown. His second year was lonely, mostly because he hadn't made any connections. He is finally enjoying life in the 3rd year and has found a group of friends and has tickets to a party tonight. A small deal for many sociable dc but a huge deal for him! He has almost had to work harder to establish friends and a social life than covering the academic work!
He has a Masters year next year so will hopefully have more happy memories of Oxford

Letsgoforaskip · 16/06/2023 06:45

What a fabulous post @beeswain ! No wonder you’re proud. Huge congratulations to your DS for persevering and turning his experience around. I think that it’s much harder to keep putting yourself forward to build a social life than work hard.
I hope he enjoys his party tonight and has a wonderful summer.

HoneyMobster · 16/06/2023 09:43

That's lovely @beeswain - I do think the four year courses are a blessing for the 2020 cohort. Next year will be the year they get to enjoy the full Oxford experience. I know DS1 is looking forward to it a lot.

pantjog · 16/06/2023 11:16

So lovely to read this update @beeswain.
