Is there an applying for 2023 thread which isn’t early entry

1000 replies

KittyMcKitty · 01/11/2022 20:35

I can see there’s the Oxbridge one but dd isn’t an early entry applicant.

anyway she’s finally submitted her UCAS I know school have added the reference so imagine it’ll be off in a day or so 🤞🏻

Shes applying for sociology and has applied to:
Durham
York
Lancaster
Sheffield
Birmingham

her predicted grades comfortably exceed all the standard offers so I hope she gets some offers (and please please please let Durham offer!!).

anyone else waiting?

We're off to an offer holder's open day at the end of Feb, during half term and we'll have a couple of days in Manchester at the same time. It's the apprentice/degree course that someone on here suggested she looked at and she is going to go and fully check it out as it's the only place we hadn't visited that she applied for.

Is that the accountancy one with PwC that I suggested? It has a great reputation albeit new at Manchester it’s been running at the others a lot of years now - Nottingham celebrated 20yrs of Flying Start relatively recently I think. Hope she enjoys the day!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/01/2023 07:21

Yes! Thank you for the suggestion. She is very interested in it so we are checking it out.

Titsywoo · 25/01/2023 16:44

So we realised this week that it would be stupid for DD to put Cardiff and Exter (her top 2) as firm and insurance as they are both offering places on the same grade (so if she doesn't get into one she won't get into the other either). So really she needs to decide between the 2 asap. She is in Cardiff in half term visiting her boyfriend then we will go to Exeter the weekend after that. We have been to both for open days but would like a better look around the areas to help her make a decision and also check out some private halls in Cardiff as they are fairly affordable.

troppibambini6 · 25/01/2023 17:51

We are still waiting on Leeds for law. It's dds first choice. Don't know what will happen with accommodation but there is no point stressing about something I can't control.

If anyone is heading to Manchester for days out and a look round let me know if you need any recommendations. I've lived in Manchester all my life although we are in Altrincham now.
Dd is very up to speed on where to go out in town and cool places to explore. I'm more a nice restaurant kind of person now Wink

DrMadelineMaxwell · 26/01/2023 00:53

Oh yes please. Somewhere for dd1 to mooch around while I take dd2 to the uni then somewhere nice for dinner I can maybe book online before we go would be much appreciated.

KittyMcKitty · 26/01/2023 18:22

Very happy day here - dd just had an offer from Durham for Sociology (AAB their standard offer). It’s her first choice so v happy. Also nice to have all 5 in now. She’s undecided between York or Lancaster for her insurance - probably York but we will go to the offer holders days for all 3).

hope all other dc’s get their remaining offers in soon.

Fab news @KittyMcKitty she didn’t have to wait for Durham for too long after all. I was thinking it could be May! Huge congrats to her.
We are up to York this weekend for offer holder day as it’s very likely to be my DDs insurance. Don’t suppose you’re there too?

KittyMcKitty · 26/01/2023 19:46

We’re at York for the 4th. I think it’ll probably be ds’s insurance she loves it there (we’ve been to 2 open days - the second one was the day after Durhams so we went on the way back down).

which is your DD’s first choice?

OP posts:
HairyMaclary · 26/01/2023 20:32

Is UCL known for being late with offers? DS was early entry so they’ve had his application since October but he is waiting on a decision from them (and Edinburgh). It’s getting nerve wracking as he has quite specific accomplished needs.

HairyMaclary · 26/01/2023 20:49

*Accommodation

PettsWoodParadise · 26/01/2023 21:00

Yes UCL is know for being late with offers. DD has an offer from her top choice but UCL was a strong contender for insurance but DD hadn’t heard from them and is likely to take her firm and an offer from another as insurance and withdraw from UCL and Durham. I can only imagine that happens many many times and is part of their tactics.

KittyMcKitty · 26/01/2023 21:04

None of ds’s friends who applied to UCL have heard back yet but Durham offers are coming out now.

hooe you don’t have to wait too long.

KittyMcKitty · 26/01/2023 21:06

DD’s not ds’s

OP posts:
mumofthree22 · 26/01/2023 21:40

Having spoken to friends with older kids - UCL tends to send offers out towards Easter - after Imperial sends offers out. DS is waiting for both these and then can make a decision.

KittyMcKitty · 26/01/2023 19:46

Her 1st would be Bath if they offer. They said in a letter to her in Dec that they’d start reviewing applications after 25th Jan, that there’s 2 reviewers for her course and hoped to have decisions before end April (I think that’s right). So she’s not getting worked up as it will be what it is and likely a bit of a wait yet.
If Bath don’t offer then Loughborough was her back up 1st choice but I’m wondering if that will be overtaken by York once she’s visited. She only applied to these 3 (has offers from York & Loughborough)

Riverpebble · 27/01/2023 07:54

No UCL news here either

troppibambini6 · 27/01/2023 08:03

@DrMadelineMaxwell

No probs at all.
I would probably just stick to city centre if she wants shopping and a mooch. Exchange square, king street, st Anne's square are all nice.
Royal exchange theatre has a nice coffee shop...

The northern quarter is probably the part that would appeal most to your girls. It's a bit less polished lots of independent coffee shops, bars and shops. It's perfectly safe just a bit more grungy. Avoid Piccadilly gardens.

Definitely a tripTo afflecks palace a Manchester institution! My dds favourite place it's in the northern quarter and very cool. I used to shop there in the 90s for all my clubbing gear.

So many places to eat depending on what you want some of my favourites are-

El gato negro (excellent tapas)
Dishoom (Indian also do amazing breakfast but book)
Tattu (high end Chinese gorgeous inside)
San Carlo cichetti (Italian small plates)
Rosso (italian stunning building)
Refuge (bit more chilled and a bar and dj)

Mackie mayor and escape to freight island also good but more a market vibe with independent food places, maybe more for a lunch?

Hope that helps Smile

troppibambini6 · 27/01/2023 08:06

Great to hear all the offers starting up again.

@KittyMcKitty you must be so pleased!

Two of dds friend got their Cambridge offers yesterday dd is really pleased for them.

Come on Leeds!!!!

Dd in the middle of mocks. No
exam today and three down just got next week to get through.

Fourcandlesx · 27/01/2023 08:15

@troppibambini6

Yes come on Leeds! We are still waiting for Law too. Like you say we can't do anything about accommodation issues but it's frustrating to feel all organised and ahead if the game only to end up waiting around, knowing it will be a rush and stress trying to sort all that. Leeds Law dept got caught out with the TAGS and over offered to the point that they were offering £10,000 and free accommodation to anyone who deferred for a year. I think the deferred cohort started last year so the course has a lot more students than normal. I'm not sure if that means that they will offer fewer places this year as a result, or if they have decided that they can accommodate more students now they are set up to do so. Guess we will find out soon. Wishing your daughter good luck

WendyWebersdrugget · 27/01/2023 08:44

Reassuring to know UCL take a long time to offer! Congrats for all the fab offers so far. DS is hoping ‘radio silence’ ends soon! I think any offer would be very motivating at the moment! I have not mentioned accommodation issues to him.

cmcc22 · 27/01/2023 11:25

Unfortunately a rejection from Warwick for DS yesterday. Still waiting on Leeds, Bristol and UCL. Hope he gets some good news soon to cheer him up before mocks start.

hellypad · 27/01/2023 11:44

DD is just waiting for Warwick now, has 4 offers and has booked on to 3 offer holder days. It really is becoming a reality now isn't it.

troppibambini6 · 27/01/2023 12:05

@Fourcandlesx oh wow I did t know any of that thank you.
I'm trying to be patient and have a what will be will be attitude but it's hard... and obviously not letting dd sense my frustration!
Good luck to your dc too

@cmcc22 oh that's disappointing although some great unis on his list everything crossed 🤞

Travelban · 27/01/2023 12:14

Great to hear all the offers coming in. Manchester cancelled Dd's interview in December and haven't got back in touch to reschedule. Dd did chase but they asked her to wait until they send something out. Also.still waiting for UCL.

Frustratingly these two are her top choices but going to attend all the other offer holder days just in case.

Tree543 · 27/01/2023 12:27

DS has got 3 offers for Computer Science Nottingham, Loughborough and Birmingham. He put his final two choices (Bath and Southampton) in the day before the deadline so we are waiting for those. Computer Science standard offers seem to be higher than other courses so he will need to do well in his exams.
