Is there an applying for 2023 thread which isn’t early entry

1000 replies

KittyMcKitty · 01/11/2022 20:35

I can see there’s the Oxbridge one but dd isn’t an early entry applicant.

anyway she’s finally submitted her UCAS I know school have added the reference so imagine it’ll be off in a day or so 🤞🏻

Shes applying for sociology and has applied to:
Durham
York
Lancaster
Sheffield
Birmingham

her predicted grades comfortably exceed all the standard offers so I hope she gets some offers (and please please please let Durham offer!!).

anyone else waiting?

I don't think there is any need to worry.

lovefizzycolabottles · 13/01/2023 11:23

@cmcc22 my dd has a Bristol economics offer. She’s waiting on UCL and Bath. Hopefully lots more offers will start coming out in the next few weeks….once the equal consideration deadline has passed. It’s just a waiting game at the moment for economics I think. Hang on in there!

Thanks. Went through this 2 years ago with eldest for computer science admissions on the back of Covid. It was awful and he only got one offer out off 5. He's very happy at Durham but it was stressful. Youngest is convinced he's only going to get one offer as well - difficult to reassure him 🙁

I know of a couple of economics offers from Warwick and from Leeds. They're both Tier 1 (A star A star A star) or Tier 2 (A star A star A) applicants though.

A number of the universities will only be doing Tier 1/Tier 2 offers until the January deadline. Others are held back to consider the whole group together.

Thanks he is 2 A* and A. Fingers crossed for news soon

DD has 4 A stars and all 9s GCSE and hasn’t heard.

I think it’s more contextual offers that are being given out for these highly competitive courses at certain universities. I haven’t seen tier 1s offered for some yet.

PettsWoodParadise · 13/01/2023 11:41

DD is also waiting on UCL (and two others). She got offers within a week of submission from two less competitive universities. DD is predicted three A stars and top marks on EPQ.

lovefizzycolabottles · 13/01/2023 11:46

@cmcc22 its really tough waiting but looking at FOI requests (look at whatdotheyknow) for the last couple of years might put your mind at rest a little. So there’s one for Bristol for example and the offer rate for 2021 was 85% for BSc Economics (if I’m reading it right).

ACJane · 13/01/2023 14:35

I don't want to derail the thread but I'm beginning to feel that non-contextual, non-international applicants are getting a bit too rough a deal, with the longer waits to hear back.

ACJane · 13/01/2023 14:36

Note, I'm not criticising the concept of contextual offers per se, just the impact on others of the current system.

northender · 13/01/2023 19:45

Still waiting for Newcastle for DD (MFL & business). She's got offers from Leeds AAB & Nottingham ABB but only really wants Newcastle.

Tree543 · 14/01/2023 10:16

My ds has got 2 offers so far for Computer Science. Nottingham AAA and Loughborough AAB. Which were the standard offers.

ScorchBeastQueen · 14/01/2023 10:31

Hello thought I'd join, and maybe vent a little.

I find it really unfair the amount of pressure some uni put on offer holders by opening accommodation so early and only if you firm your place now.

DC has all offers in and although at the moment has a favourite, is quite rightly still open minded about a couple of the others, and wants to do a few offer days before making a firm. 1 offer is a at more prestigious Uni with higher grades to get in (still achivable for DC) but at the moment DC prefer a different uni for the course content and industry links, and likes the city.

DC favoured uni has opened accommodation already for firms, a lot of the accommodation is quite pricey so I can see a big majority going for the lower price (as the accommodation is actually really nice even for the lower budget) DC just isn't ready to make this decision right now. But would also be up shit creek if ending up in the expensive accommodation.

It just annoys me that this extra pressure is put on kids probably still in the middle of mocks and maybe even waiting for all offers to come in.

I knew Nottingham has a bad rep for doing this, but not the uni DC has an offer from.

It’s a complete shit show and they don’t seem to learn from one year to the next. Even worse for kids whose offers don’t all come in until late March to May.

dunnott · 14/01/2023 10:47

@ScorchBeastQueen

I think it's ok for universities to start accepting accommodation applications, as long as they don't do allocations until after the May cutoff for offers.

However, if they're already allocating accommodation in January before the application deadline then, yes I agree, that's wholly unfair.

But then, experiencing the university admissions process for the first time this year, it seems it's geared up to drive home the "life's not fair" message to our DC.

ScorchBeastQueen · 14/01/2023 11:03

that's a good point dunnott unfortunately though I can't see whether it's just applications or actual booking, unless you click on book a room now, which can't do until firmed.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 16/01/2023 16:49

DS’s form is in at last. Hope some offers follow soon.

He has applied for Economics at 5 unis with Standard offers: AAA, AAB x3 and ABB - hopefully a reasonable range. Predictions AAA.

Exciting times.

Neversaygoodbye · 16/01/2023 16:53

That's great @SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun hopefully he'll get the offers he wants. DD had 2 offers through last week, one within 24hours of UCAS submission. However, she's still waiting on 3 more including her top choice.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 16/01/2023 17:20

Thanks Neversaidgoodbye. Well done to your DD on her offers so far. Hope the others follow soon. I have the niggly feeling that January applications won’t be looked on as favourably but they aren’t allowed to do that I don’t think.

Neversaygoodbye · 16/01/2023 17:44

DD's UCAS only went in last Monday and 2 offers last week. We've just had a 3rd. All 3 have offered lower if she firms, not sure what that means but it's nice to have. Top choice still holding out on us though lol. So I don't think you need to worry, the offers will come. X

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 16/01/2023 18:24

That's encouraging. Amazing that all three have said lower if she firms and then other people have had higher than the standard offer further up the thread. You just don't know until they come in I guess - all depends how many other people are applying for those courses I imagine.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 17/01/2023 19:23

An offer! A standard AAB one. 🙂 Also a nice e mail from the AAA uni saying that they want to wait until after 25th January before making most offers so they can consider everyone.

Neversaygoodbye · 17/01/2023 20:56

@SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun fantastic news.

WendyWebersdrugget · 18/01/2023 19:25

Brilliant news! No news here yet, I’m afraid.

Titsywoo · 18/01/2023 19:38

DD just got an offer from Cardiff! AAA or AAA if she gets an A in her EPQ. Her predicted grades are AAA and the EPQ grade looks like it will be A so fingers crossed! Cardiff is her top choice so she is very pleased. Just waiting on Exeter which hopefully will come through in March.

Titsywoo · 18/01/2023 19:39

Sorry that is supposed to be A * AA!
