Is there an applying for 2023 thread which isn’t early entry

1000 replies

KittyMcKitty · 01/11/2022 20:35

I can see there’s the Oxbridge one but dd isn’t an early entry applicant.

anyway she’s finally submitted her UCAS I know school have added the reference so imagine it’ll be off in a day or so 🤞🏻

Shes applying for sociology and has applied to:
Durham
York
Lancaster
Sheffield
Birmingham

her predicted grades comfortably exceed all the standard offers so I hope she gets some offers (and please please please let Durham offer!!).

anyone else waiting?

Us too - I think they're often a bit slower.

Aurea · 10/01/2023 17:37

Congrats on the offers Popping Action!!🎉

We're waiting for three Scottish ones too for comp sci (home)

May I ask the subject and whether you are RUK?

KittyMcKitty · 10/01/2023 17:42

Brilliant news on all the offers - congratulations to all dc.

Dd in middle of mocks at the moment and still waiting on Durham sigh - if they’re going to reject her I hope they don’t keep her hanging on for months.

DD wrote an email and sent it to the admissions depts of the unis to explain that it looked like her GCSE Maths had been omitted somehow. I've just asked if she's had any replies and she's had offers from all the unis at or below the grades they advertise on their website. So she has offers from Cardiff, Leeds, Manchester, Leeds Beckett and Chester.

Chester is v close so was just making up the numbers on the application really, as she would prefer to live away from home. Leeds she liked best as a City. Manchester is an apprenticeship/degree combo. So she needs to make her mind up now.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 11/01/2023 17:41

Aurea, it was chemistry and we're in Scotland. But he already has his higher grades.

Aurea · 11/01/2023 17:48

Thank you for replying Popping.

We're Scottish too with DS applying for comp sci.

He has 6 As at higher from S5 so I was hopeful for a quick decision, but alas no offer yet.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 11/01/2023 19:58

Fingers crossed for him. I imagine it's just them catching up after the break.
Ds1 is similar with his grades and Aberdeen said they would be keen on him coming, but they haven't got back to him yet, so it's hopefully just a matter of waiting- possibly until 25th ish.

Justbetweenus · 11/01/2023 21:58

Maybe I should make another thread for this but I’ll try here first. DS had his first offer today conditional on AAB grades. UCAS website said ABB for this course which is why he applied. Why would they offer above what UCAS said. If he was on target for AAB, he would likely have made different choices!

Justbetweenus · 11/01/2023 22:04

Ignore me! I looked at UCAS and it says AAB-ABB. So that’s be why.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 12/01/2023 07:24

The ranges are for different reasons as well. To find out why thy would give different offers you have to look on the university website subject page. Some of them depend on what subjects the A-levels are in, some are contextual and the conditions of contextual offers vary too.

Congratulations to your son for getting his first offer. Does he think it is within his reach? Is it his first choice?

Justbetweenus · 12/01/2023 08:32

Thank you fir the encouragement @SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun . It’s his first choice (and first offer) so I hope it motivates him to go for it. Pre-covid I’d have thought definitely achievable, but (like many others I’m sure), the covid school experience did him no favours so … not sure. All to work for though!

Lightsabre · 12/01/2023 10:48

@SuperLoudPoppingAction, do you mind me asking what his offer grades for Chemistry are please. Ds applying next year.

GinandDubonnet · 12/01/2023 11:55

DD has just received an offer for Chemistry at Edinburgh. Very pleased to have an offer of course but, although the standard entry requirements are listed on the website as AAA to ABB, her offer is A star A star A!

An anyone shed any light on this?

SandyIrvine · 12/01/2023 12:59

@GinandDubonnet. Edinburgh is trying to reduce it proportion of privately educated RUK students (over 50% compared to 25% of Scottish students). DD heard that privately educated students who they wanted would get high grade offers. Could this be the reason?

Generally would mean they already have a high number of applicants with high predicted grades

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 12/01/2023 15:42

Lightsabre, it's an unconditional offer so no grade requirements for 6th year

GinandDubonnet · 12/01/2023 16:39

Thanks Sandy and Wednesdays.

She is a state school candidate (comp) so I guess it must be down to numbers applying then. I think the website should be more honest about this though - she probably wouldn’t have applied if she’d known there was a possibility of such a high offer tbh.

E did quite a bit of this last year too. I thu j it is really shabby. Cambridge has always done it a bit but until recently I don't think other places did. It seems v unhelpful when candidates have tried to out together a se solve clutch of offers. And in some cases makes the spread of tarrifs from those down to contextual extremely wide,

Lightsabre · 12/01/2023 18:41

Thank you @SuperLoudPoppingAction - great news for your dc.

Titsywoo · 12/01/2023 19:13

Still waiting on Exeter and Cardiff but Exeter emailed to say they won't start handing out offers until March which is annoying. How does accommodation work? I know you can apply for it once you have chosen your firm and insurance but if you can't do that until April or May do you have less chance of getting the decent accommodation - i.e. is it first come first served?

WednesdaysPlaits · 12/01/2023 21:02

It’s annoying when you’re just waiting on one. We are waiting on St Andrews. Ds is getting twitchy and might just firm Exeter if St Andrews don’t respond by the time Exeter accommodation booking opens.

NotDonna · 13/01/2023 01:29

@GinandDubonnet is she predicted A star A star A? I ask because when eldest was applying a few years ago, the head of sixth form said this happens at a few universities - tariff will be AAA but they offer A stars if the student is predicted A stars. It was the school’s reasoning for not predicting A stars apparently. I thought it was a bit far fetched but since then I’ve heard this happen a few times to A star students.

dunnott · 13/01/2023 07:22

@NotDonna My DS's school gave this as their reason for not over-predicting grades on UCAS forms.

They said some Universities will offer higher than typical offer, especially where the Admissions staff are aware that a particular school has a trend (notoriety was the word actually used) for inflated predictions Vs actuals.

Yet another slant on the process which isn't exactly fair to all candidates

cmcc22 · 13/01/2023 10:28

Hi all. Been watching the thread for a while. Does anyone have economics offers from Warwick, Leeds, Bristol or UCL? My son only has 1(Newcastle) of his 5 and is beginning to worry. Thanks in advance

WednesdaysPlaits · 13/01/2023 11:15

I know of a couple of economics offers from Warwick and from Leeds. They're both Tier 1 (A star A star A star) or Tier 2 (A star A star A) applicants though.

A number of the universities will only be doing Tier 1/Tier 2 offers until the January deadline. Others are held back to consider the whole group together.
