2023 uni applications for those pursuing art and creative routes

Duchessofmuchness · 04/09/2022 21:56

The other thread discussing Uni applications for RG and academic routes isn't so relevant for DS. He's considering Art Foundation year or direct entry to uni for fashion design.

Anyone care to join a thread on similar creative paths. (Not just fashion!)

He's looking at art foundation at Kingston, Central St Martin's, UCA,

For Fashion BA looking at Central St Martins, London College of Fashion, Manchester Met, Nottingham Trent, Liverpool John Moores, Leeds Beckett.

Most seem to accept without art foundation but he would need one to Central St Martin's so if he wants to try for that will need foundation.

Lots of open days coming up and hopefully school will give him some more advice next week. No start on his PS yet!!

DD has an offer from Manchester. This is her top choice, really pleased for her. Conditional on her passing her art foundation course. No interview, which surprised us. Lots of good luck to all still waiting.

Congratulations to your DD! Is that for Fashion BA? Was the portfolio submitted on line? Did your DD focus on fashion projects during her foundation year? Will likely be one of DS's choices for next year.

@Duchessofmuchness it's the Fashion Design and Technology course rather than the straight Fashion one. She's more interested in working in industry on the technical and translation to manufacture aspects than designing per say.
Portfolio was online, I haven't actually seen it as she is Ms Independent and refused any proof reading and offers of support and wouldn't show us. Work submitted was from this year's art foundation course and very varied, no fashion included except possibly for one piece of textile printing. I was surprised about that but current university foundation tutors said better to submit what she is doing now. However (massive proud mum boast here) she got an A* with a perfect mark in her A level Art Textiles so I'm assuming Manchester trust that grade, especially as it's really relevant to the course. She had her A level work ready to show in interview if needed.

Hi all,

For those DC who are hoping to head to uni straight into degree (or for integrated foundation), Student Finance Applications are now open at studentfinance.campaign.gov.uk/

They don't need to know their firm choice yet! Deadline isn't for ages, but some applications take a long time to process (seems random). Happy to help with any questions.

Soma · 01/03/2023 18:14

Thanks@PhotoDad, that's very helpful.
DC now has three offers here, one interview lined up and one portfolio still to submit, but that is a fifth choice.

OneFrenchEgg · 01/03/2023 18:23

Dc is 2024 entry - they plan to earn money and paint for fun in the next year so I'm assuming accommodation and finance is a next year job. They need to apply for the disabled student thing too.

Acinonyx2 · 01/03/2023 18:43

@PhotoDad thanks!

DesignDD · 07/03/2023 18:15

Has anyone' s DC heard back from Man Met yet for any design courses (craft and design or product design)? DD has offers from Brighton, DMU and Northumbria but still waiting for Man Met who I think can be quite slow to respond?

luluposs · 08/03/2023 10:59

No info on Man Met, but just to say out of 8 applications my daughter is waiting on all but 1, who came through with an offer day after UCAS form went in.

4/5 UCAS choices still to come, so I guess they're all slow/ late in the arts! Waiting part is no fun for her :( !

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 08/03/2023 11:10

DS still waiting on 3 through UCAS....so slow...

OneFrenchEgg · 08/03/2023 12:05

Dc really liked UCA Farnham on the offer holders day/ portfolio review day, it's small and feels nurturing but they loved some of the add on optional things. The town was lovely - a big space is used in collaboration, and it was very small but felt fairly safe.

luluposs · 08/03/2023 14:58

Ok well make that 3/5, she just had an online interview and they made her an offer there and then! So still waiting on 3 UCAS and 2 FADs. Agonising when all their mates are already choosing accoms!

pritsticks · 08/03/2023 15:29

Hi - anyone else with a DD / DS applying to UAL Chelsea for BA Textiles Design?

Aww it's getting there !

Pourmeanotherwine · 08/03/2023 18:25

DD has 2 offers, waiting for 2, not sent portfolio yet for 5th ( still has a week or so before the deadline)

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 10/03/2023 16:38

DS just got an unconditional offer from Uni of Leeds for Art amd Design! Just Brighton and UCL (which now seems unlikely) to go.

JamJarJane · 10/03/2023 16:55

I'm so pleased to have found this thread! DS has offers for Fine Art from Loughborough, NUA and Lincoln. We are still waiting to hear from Brighton and Leeds.

PhotoDad · 10/03/2023 17:46

Welcome to people just finding the thread, and congratulations on some excellent offers, exciting times!
By the way, if your DC is still waiting but has an offer from their top choice and wants to crack on with accommodation, they don't have to wait for all the replies to come through on UCAS. Students can withdraw an application at any point, even now. (That's what DD did as soon as she got her unconditional offer from her top choice, so that she could get the room she wanted. But different places run accommodation choices in different ways!)

Philandbill · 11/03/2023 09:53

Congratulations to all DC who have places and good wishes to those who are waiting. DD is going to an offer holder day in a couple of weeks, she's really looking forward to it. And her thought that the place was conditional on passing art foundation was incorrect, they just want to see her A level certificates. 😉

PhotoDad · 11/03/2023 11:02

Yay! My DD swapped contact details with some other "definites" during her offer-holder day, and they kept in touch all summer (she even went camping with one of them). It made the move to uni in September much easier for her as she already had some friends on the course.

(A year on, and her little friendship group are spending today sketching in a museum, for fun, which is the sort of thing she'd always dreamed of doing. Art-school has been the making of her.)

luluposs · 11/03/2023 13:03

Ah that would be brilliant @PhotoDad as v worried about getting London accoms - but unfortunately daughter still waiting to hear from her top two choices. Now has offers from 3rd, 4th & 5th choices. Top two the toughest to get into so bit anxious, but for her it's been really good confirmation that she didn't need a foundation which she didn't really want to do anyway (also applied for 3 of those, had one rejection and 2 to hear). So it'll now definitely be straight to a degree from A levels for her which has been a good bit of clarity!

Localher0 · 11/03/2023 17:15

Agreeing with @PhotoDad Last year DD was waiting on Edinburgh but wanted to firm NTU and they released all the accommodation at the end of March. So she withdrew from Edinburgh to firm up. NTU is still first choice although she's changed course since doing her foundation year but that was all handled internally so no need for a new UCAS phew!

Pourmeanotherwine · 11/03/2023 18:03

Yes my DD1 gave up on Edinburgh ( for maths) a couple of years back as they were taking too long and she had an offer she preferred. DD2 is still waiting as the 2 she is waiting for (Brighton and AUB) are her top 2 unfortunately.

QGMum · 12/03/2023 11:12

Is anyone else still waiting to hear back from Kingston for an application to Foundation? My dc is still waiting to hear but everyone they know has already heard.

luluposs · 12/03/2023 14:24

@QGMum everyone we know who applied for KSA FAD has already heard but those were all a no, including my daughter. So maybe no news is good news?! Meanwhile Kingston is also the only degree course my daughter is yet to hear from, they do seem to be the longest to make a decision...

luluposs · 12/03/2023 20:15

Daughter got offer from UAL (LCF) today for BA Fashion Design & Development!! Very proud of her, as she doesn't have a foundation and this was her 2nd to top choice. I seem to recall those on here with firsthand LCF experience/ would love any insight....particularly with the big move of campus to the east end this year.
