2023 uni applications for those pursuing art and creative routes

1000 replies

Duchessofmuchness · 04/09/2022 21:56

The other thread discussing Uni applications for RG and academic routes isn't so relevant for DS. He's considering Art Foundation year or direct entry to uni for fashion design.

Anyone care to join a thread on similar creative paths. (Not just fashion!)

He's looking at art foundation at Kingston, Central St Martin's, UCA,

For Fashion BA looking at Central St Martins, London College of Fashion, Manchester Met, Nottingham Trent, Liverpool John Moores, Leeds Beckett.

Most seem to accept without art foundation but he would need one to Central St Martin's so if he wants to try for that will need foundation.

Lots of open days coming up and hopefully school will give him some more advice next week. No start on his PS yet!!

@mondaytosunday sorry to hear that, I'm sure where ever your DD ends up she will do well. I've heard really good things about Morley College, the resources are supposed to be first rate.

luluposs · 22/02/2023 00:09

@mondaytosunday same here! Daughter got the Kingston Foundation rejection email last evening sitting in an airport terminal coming home from a half term trip. She'd been checking email constantly (as also waiting on a few others) and it was awful as she could see the title but not the content as we couldn't get service til just before boarding the plane! She's also gutted as she figured FADs would be easier to get onto than BAs (which she's also applying for) so is taking this as a "bad sign". She knows its hugely competitive but Kingston is her first choice - and further, while we were away, their admissions sent her an email saying her application for the BA is "on hold" as her portfolio hadn't been submitted correctly, so she's been in a panic about that. She thinks she's resubmitted correctly today, but I think I'm going to call them myself tomorrow to check - been very hands off so far, but can't bear thought she might lose out cos of stupid tech snafus!

luluposs · 22/02/2023 00:16

@Duchessofmuchness
"The number of talented students they reject in that assessment is mind blowing."

This makes me feel better! KSA is DD's first choice so the rejection also stung. 3 of her classmates also applied to the foundation & she doesn't know if any of them got in yet & hasn't told her teachers... it's all a learning curve for them isn't it?!

mondaytosunday · 22/02/2023 01:07

@luluposs one thing my daughter did say was it's only one year and a stepping stone to a degree. She isn't interested in Kingston for her degree (wants to go outside London). We were quite seduced by the facilities at Kingston though.
I think what she really needs after A levels is a break!
I'm waiting to hear about my son who went back to A&E with chest pains tonight (he broke a couple bones in a moped accident a month ago). A friend of mine took him in as I live 75 miles away. Having kids is so stressful!

Localher0 · 22/02/2023 14:54

It's brutal isn't it? So much harder for kids wanting to do creative subjects as they're not only being judged on a statement and predicted grades but on highly personal pieces of work. DD's friend is applying to drama school and the number of auditions she has to do is crazy....
To those waiting for degree offers don't lose heart just cos KSA said no - DD got offers from all hers. (Except for Edinburgh and that cos she was waiting so long and needed to firm NTU so she could get accommodation sorted).

PerkyBlinder · 22/02/2023 21:28

your daughter is so right @mondaytosunday about foundation being just a stepping stone. It really doesn’t matter where you go for foundation and it’s your degree that really matters. It’s so hard though being rejected though when your heart and soul has gone into the work and when so young still. Sending 💐

My daughter has been shortlisted in a few national student photography competitions and the winner really could have been any of the shortlisted entries as the standard of all of them was so high. It all becomes very subjective once you’re over a certain quality threshold. Sometimes one tutor will really like one student but the other tutors will prefer another student. I’m sure she will do brilliantly wherever she goes.

OneFrenchEgg · 23/02/2023 13:40

@mumma24 conditional from NUA received yesterday. That's them done , they only applied to three.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 23/02/2023 15:04

Well done to mini egg.!
DS has an unconditional from DMU for BA. But as he is doing foundation there we kind of expected it!
Still waiting on Brighton, UCL (long shot!) and Uni of Leeds.

OneFrenchEgg · 23/02/2023 16:29

Thank you! Amazing to have an unconditional in the bag, what a relief.

Soma · 23/02/2023 17:55

Yes, well done @OneFrenchEgg and Mini Egg. You much be pleased that you don't have to think about it anymore. We've got two offers, two interviews coming up and waiting on the final one.

OneFrenchEgg · 23/02/2023 18:08

Thanks Soma yes very pleased for them, you may remember my earlier stress on here it's been a tough few years. Just hope they get the points needed now!
Good luck with the next interviews

Wbeezer · 24/02/2023 16:59

DS3 had two interviews for Glasgow, one for Fashion, one for Textiles. No idea how many they interview per place but it's made him feel a bit more optimistic about Edinburgh as his folio was not as good for Glasgow ( had to be in first and was a bit rushed). He doesn't really want to go to Glasgow as he loves living in Edinburgh so whatever the outcome with Glasgow we will have to endure the horrendous wait for Edinburgh offers/rejections.

Pourmeanotherwine · 24/02/2023 19:31

Dd has had her first offer, from Falmouth. Cardiff sounded very positive at the interview too. The portfolios for the other 3 will be uploaded over the next few days.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 24/02/2023 19:38

Yay congrats!

OneFrenchEgg · 24/02/2023 21:29

Excellent news

Acinonyx2 · 25/02/2023 17:58

Good news - Falmouth was nice - just too far for dd in the end.

MrsMontyD · 25/02/2023 19:30

Has anyone's dc had a response from NTU or Sheffield Hallam Illustration yet?

DD's sent portfolios but heard nothing.

She's had offers from Leeds Arts and Lincoln.

mondaytosunday · 25/02/2023 22:30

Good news on the offers.
My daughter seems to have gotten over her Kingston disappointment (could be that she's in the middle of mocks and has next issue of her mag to do so has other things to worry about). Morley have booked her in for portfolio interview mid April! UAL have given March 10 for portfolio submission but she'll probably send it this weekend if she can get her head around pebblepad. Oddly they have not asked for a teacher recommendation.
On another subject, she did her EPQ (essay, artefact and presentation) in November- how long until she gets her grade?

luluposs · 26/02/2023 10:33

@mondaytosunday my daughter says 31st March latest date to get EPQ grade back (she's waiting on hers also).

Interesting UAL (assuming you're referring to CSM FAD?) is March 10 portfolio for your daughter. Mine left it til last moment to submit online application on purpose as she's least interested in it (pretentiousness over substance in her opinion) so she didn't want it distracting from her others. She's got x2 interviews on March 8th (Ravensbourne & Goldsmiths) so if CSM portfolio can go in after, that's good!

OneFrenchEgg · 26/02/2023 19:45

With in person visits how much effort are your dc putting into display? Dc has a portfolio review (has an offer) and seems to think turning up with loose sheets and sketch books will be ok. I think I've read of people framing stuff on back board but some of it is needed for school etc.

mondaytosunday · 26/02/2023 19:56

@OneFrenchEgg I think your daughter is correct. Several videos I've seen say do NOT spend money mounting your work. But a sensible organisation that is easy to flip through (back in the day we put our pieces in plastic sleeves in a big portfolio). I am already wondering how in we can get the several A1 canvases, papier-mâché pieces, not to mention her big 3D piece (that will be photos I'm sure) to her interview.
Thank you @luluposs for that info about EPQ. And no it's UAL Camberwell, and she sent her application Feb 15ish and got the request for portfolio about a week later. We had been told at the open day it would be 10 days, but it's a bit longer. I think it's staggered though. She's in the middle of mocks but I'm keen she gets it sent off asap.

OneFrenchEgg · 26/02/2023 19:58

@mondaytosunday thank you, that's so helpful. To be fair the online portfolios were PowerPoint so easier to annotate and organise I guess? I remember running round with massive folders of gouache boards (my favourite paint at the time!) for a level and FE. Just so much info out there.

Philandbill · 27/02/2023 20:24

DD has an offer from Manchester. This is her top choice, really pleased for her. Conditional on her passing her art foundation course. No interview, which surprised us. Lots of good luck to all still waiting.

OneFrenchEgg · 27/02/2023 20:58

Excellent news x

PhotoDad · 27/02/2023 21:05

Some great news; congratulations to all with offers!

Meanwhile, DD (first-year illustration degree) is working on her first Live Brief, and (separately) making/binding a short book as a final project. She has had SUCH a fantastic time, and I hope that all of your various DC find as much pleasure as her! (Although she finds it incredibly hard work, she's kept very busy.)
