Have been doing lists of things to be done before Dd goes off but must admit there's a bit of burying head in sand going on.

What are you doing to help prepare Dc/yourself ahead of the move (practical/logistics or indeed emotional preparation )

With DD1, I made her bed, said hello to a few flatmates then she said she wanted to go it alone so we left. That was Durham and there was a lot planned for them so we felt ok leaving.

Benjispruce4 · 15/09/2022 21:00

@Fiddlersgreen any sign of bank card?

Fiddlersgreen · 15/09/2022 21:15

@Benjispruce4 nothing! It’s got a week to arrive or DS will have to go without it!

Benjispruce4 · 15/09/2022 21:27

DD goes Saturday!

EntertainingandFactual · 15/09/2022 21:49

Mine is going all of 14 miles away and I’m acting as if she’s emigrating to New Zealand! Seriously, I’m excited for her but will miss chatting to her at home most evenings & catching up with her news.

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 15/09/2022 22:27

Entertaining you can still enjoy chatting on video call or as she’s walking to shop. It is different but they like to check in.

RedRec · 15/09/2022 22:31

There seems to be a mania for sending them all off with a copy of Oh The Places You'll Go. Am I the only one barfing slightly at this?

Decorhate · 15/09/2022 22:53

I can just imagine the eye rolling from Ds if I handed him a copy!

atiaofthejulii · 15/09/2022 22:54

I hadn’t heard of that fad, but yes a bit cringey - imagine realising you have 6 copies between you in your flat 😀

Dd has packed “most of her clothes except the ones still drying”, her pillowcases (but no other bedding!) and her kitchen stuff. So quite a bit more to sort out tomorrow morning- her move in slot is at 3 but it’s only a very short journey thank goodness. She’s off out to London Saturday afternoon and evening with her sisters so might end up sleeping at home again that night 😂

Champagneforeveryone · 16/09/2022 00:46

I'm at work with a car loaded full of DS's worldly goods. He's hoping to leave at 9, I'd be much happier with 11 but we do have the traffic to contend with.

I'm oddly upset tonight, which hopefully means I can be upbeat and positive tomorrow 🤔

SierraSapphire · 16/09/2022 05:52

Today is the day for us, I wanted to go out for breakfast in our favourite place, but DD said she'll be too agitated and just wants to finish packing and to go and get some baskets for her wardrobe!

I'm staying up there overnight, DD has been allowed to move in a day before everyone else because I am having some medical treatment, so I'm taking her and her sister out for a meal tonight, then having a mooch around the shops and possibly seeing a friend before I head back tomorrow. I think this might be a softer parting than just leaving straight away from her accommodation. She'll be back in a month for a friends birthday party anyway. Even today it still doesn't feel real in some ways!

Benjispruce4 · 16/09/2022 06:44

What is “Oh the places you’ll go!” ?

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 16/09/2022 06:48

We are off today too. Her stuff is in the hall. It’s pretty well organised as this is 3rd child although I’m still thinking of things like hot water bottle (for period pain, hopefully not for cold room).

im going to work this morning but hopefully we’ll be off by 12.30/1. Maps says it’s 3 hours but it will be at least 4 on a Friday afternoon. We’re staying overnight too.

I’m feeling happy for her although she said it felt a bit real seeing her stuff in the hall ready to go instead of just piled up in her sister’s room. I have been having dreams that involve disasters like floods so part of my brain is nervous too. 😁🤞

Benjispruce4 · 16/09/2022 06:55

Aha hot water bottle! Good idea.

MarchingFrogs · 16/09/2022 07:41

Benjispruce4 · 16/09/2022 06:44

What is “Oh the places you’ll go!” ?

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oh,_the_Places_You'll_Go!

A Dr Seuss book.

Would almost certainly have occasioned major eye-rolling here, too, had we tried to give it to any of our three when they went off to university.

(DD was the only one for whom I made the effort to provide a 'Moving up to secondary school' type book and she said it was actually the worst thing about moving up to secondary school she experienced, not an eventuality covered in the book itself, oddly enough...).

Tenpastseven · 16/09/2022 07:53

That has made me laugh out loud @MarchingFrogs 🤣

Tenpastseven · 16/09/2022 07:58

Getting ready to set off tomorrow to Bristol with DS2. I’m remembering when we dropped DS1 4 years ago at Uni he was agitated and stressed and rather vile on the day. It made it harder but also easier to leave him. I remember getting home and feeling a mixture of anticlimax and disorientation. It wasn’t as I’d expected it to be. It certainly wasn’t a ‘Oh the places you’ll go’ kinda day.

DS2 a very different beast so imagine it’ll be slightly less stressful 🤞🏻

NCTDN · 16/09/2022 08:09

I imagine dd will be stressed and vile as well Grin

SierraSapphire · 16/09/2022 08:12

DD is still sitting in bed not dressed watching Friends even though she wants to leave in two hours! I have decided to focus on tidying up the house so I don't come back to a house that's both empty and an absolute bomb site!

Champagneforeveryone · 16/09/2022 08:59

DS is up and about, showered and twitchy 😆

His answers are a little terse but I can go work with that. I finished work early so I've had the grand total of three hours sleep. I'm sure this will help my mood immensely!

Tenpastseven · 16/09/2022 09:04

Good Lord. Medal for you @Champagneforeveryone and good luck. Have you got a long journey?

atiaofthejulii · 16/09/2022 10:48

Good luck to all undertaking the drive and move today.

Dd has been feeling a bit grotty for the last couple of days (she often feels a bit grotty so it’s hard to tell whether it’s something brewing or just normal for her) but it’s definitely turning into a cough/cold and she looks all heavy-eyed. I think she may end up moving her stuff in and saying hello but coming back home to sleep tonight rather than spending a lot of energy trying to be sociable which is likely to really knock her out. Also really don’t want her to be patient zero for freshers flu in her halls! (She did a covid test on Wednesday (negative) but will get her to do another today.)

I’m working at home today but dh is driving her.

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 16/09/2022 12:46

Hope your DD picks up soon Atia

We are squeezed into the car and about to navigate the M42…

Sadless · 16/09/2022 13:31

Mine dd is off tomorrow not got everything packed yet and she's working till 8pm tonight. Should only take about 1 hour to get there and apparently only have 15 minutes parking space so need to be quick then will take her shopping. Quick question does she need to take a full set of plates. Getting abit worried about car space now.

Thanks
Sal

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 16/09/2022 14:45

We’ve packed 2 plates, 2 bowls. Rest at home as spares.
the cupboard space in usually tiny
