Have been doing lists of things to be done before Dd goes off but must admit there's a bit of burying head in sand going on.

What are you doing to help prepare Dc/yourself ahead of the move (practical/logistics or indeed emotional preparation )

@stephaniestephanie she seems happy. Did you hear that Goldney had a fire a few days ago and they've all had to be found another place to stay? I wasn't sure if that's where your ds was.

stilldumdedumming · 19/09/2022 12:38

Dd has been in touch. None of her pans work because she has an induction hob. I really thought I'd checked that! Any recommendations for a basic set. She needs a frying pan and a couple of pans I would say.

Maggiethecat · 19/09/2022 12:46

@stilldumdedumming - got Dd John Lewis ones - think most of theirs are for all hob types but check. They have an essential range too.
If no JL near her can order online and collect from a Waitrose if nearby.

Got one pot from TKMaxx which can sometimes have a good range at good prices so that’s a good bet if one nearby.

Also, sainsburys has household stuff on sale at the moment so that might be worth a try.

@stilldumdedumming i ordered a set a few years ago when we updated our kitchen. I got them online fairly cheaply and they’re still going strong. An pan will work if it adheres to a magnet. We still use some of our old ones that are magnetic.

Maggiethecat · 19/09/2022 13:46

Seems some of Sainsburys Tefal pans are half price just now!

We bought induction pans from TKMaxx, by far the cheapest we could find. Great brands too

EntertainingandFactual · 19/09/2022 14:22

IKEA ANNONS

stilldumdedumming · 19/09/2022 15:40

Thank you so much - when I first looked it was scary ££££

stephaniestephanie · 19/09/2022 15:44

@NCTDN no I hadn't heard about the fire. Not a great start for those students. Ds was woken by fire alarm at 3am last night, some incident where one of the lift doors had been kicked in because someone was stuck. Welcome to city life! A far cry from his sleepy village upbringing.

We dropped DD off a week ago...I've found it incredibly hard ! We settled her in, did shopping etc. my main worry is that she cannot cope at uni due to disability, which is a hidden disability . She's so desperate to enjoy the course, but struggled today just to walk up the road to get some photos taken and meet friend . Am crossing everything she can manage and she gets some reasonable adjustments . Sorry for rant ..feel so worried . Apart from that , on positive side she has made some friends !

EntertainingandFactual · 20/09/2022 06:49

@stilldumdedumming
Luckily we has a set of the £12 ikea ones in the cupboard so she’s taken those.
Hope you get it sorted.

stephaniestephanie · 20/09/2022 07:50

@doyouwanticewiththat that sounds hard - for you both. I'm sure you have been looking out for her all her life and now she is out in the world having to do it herself. I hope that she will find a supportive friendship group and that she will be able to find any help she may need with managing student life alongside her disability.

This worries me about my dd too. When at home she spends a lot of time in her room in bed because she’s often in pain. She’s so excited about starting uni and keeps telling me about all the activities she wants to do and how she wants tot go to different cities with her new friends but I don’t see how she will be able too without making herself very unwell 😬. I am hoping her new friends will be understanding and not leave her out of things because she can be slow and needs to rest often.

Mine has had a disaster of day 1, went to the wrong campus, had to navigate tube to correct campus, late for induction then again lost navigating London back to halls and given up on induction afternoon today!

Maggiethecat · 20/09/2022 15:29

@LAS123 - it will get better once dc figures out moving around.
probably just chill out for the rest of the day!

LAS123 · 20/09/2022 16:45

@Maggiethecat yes I hope so, she spent the rest of the afternoon asleep! Shes very poor at organisation and planning anyway so getting to a campus at the right time was an acheivement....just the wrong campus!

atiaofthejulii · 20/09/2022 17:30

Oh @LAS123 she must have been stressed, poor thing! Hope she isn't put off trying whatever the next thing is.

@doyouwanticewiththat @Lovemusic33 it's really hard isn't it? My dd has an autoimmune disease and gets really fatigued. She's learnt to just be upfront with people about it. But she said to one of her new flatmates that she has a chronic illness and he reacted as if she'd just told him she has a terminal illness, so she had to quickly reassure him that she's mostly fine! Weirdly it turns out that another of her flatmates has a very similar condition to her, so hopefully that will help both of them. Have your daughters applied for DSA? DD took a while to get round to doing the application so currently waiting for her medical evidence form to be completed.

Lovemusic33 · 20/09/2022 21:26

My dd is getting DSA, they have been amazing and are sorting dd with a comfortable chair for her desk and a wedge for her bed so she can study in bed when she’s having a bad day.

SierraSapphire · 21/09/2022 06:20

Mine's already lost her room key in a club last night! She's been clubbing every night since Friday so I'm surprised she's still walking and talking tbh, but the social side I was never really worried about, it's how she settles to studying after time out that will be the challenge....

NCTDN · 21/09/2022 07:04

Sierra my dd is the same Blush

Champagneforeveryone · 21/09/2022 07:56

sierra , DS has been the same. He was something of a party animal anyway, though only when he didn't have work / college. The lack of lectures so far seems to have allowed him to indulge this tendency!

I'm also insanely jealous, his new flat mate is Thai and has been cooking for them. I'm being regaled with updates of his dinner which appears decidedly more exotic than mine!

EddieHowesBlackandWhiteArmy · 21/09/2022 08:44

DD has also been out every night and seems to be loving uni life. I got a garbled text at 4:22 this morning about textbooks 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

EntertainingandFactual · 23/09/2022 20:01

agghhh… missing DD tonight!
It’s curry night here and she’s away having fun! Just as it should be but I’ll say here I’m missing her terribly!

Only dropped dd off today and missing her already. I kind of feel bad making plans to do things without her, it won’t be the same. Fridays nights we usually watch goggle box and stuff our faces with snacks but tonight she’s not here 😢. I know she’s probably fine and she will have fun but god I’m going to miss her just being here.

DeathWinsAGolfish · 24/09/2022 07:59

Back off across to see DD1 today to take things she needs, I'm so excited!
May also have a huge vat of chilli, gf biscuits, and a big bag of our apples, for the whole flat before they head out again tonight. (The seventh in a row...) They seem to have a great friendship already.
The house feels very quiet though, and we've all swapped from our usual spot at the table. I still go into her room to open and close the curtains, and have not cried for the last two days, so there's progress.
Sending luck to those heading off today.
