Following on from the Oxbridge rejects thread but I've got rid of those two words. I for one am interested to know where they all end up and when Durham might finally deign to reject/offer DS...

Love rugby player not twig legs in a kilt.

@foodledoff - I’m sorry to hear the news. In truth the Durham rejection has been smarting a little here too. DS got 4 A band 1’s, 1 A at Highers, had a brilliant personal statement (good enough for Cambridge interview) and a load of relevant extra interest demonstrated in the subject. That said I know that there are a load of kids in the same boat for other places and we are very lucky to have St A’s which was in most respects a better option anyway. But still more annoyed as the days have gone by.

In previous years they have offered to 60-70% of applicants. And then they weed out with results. I simply do not believe that can be the case this year. if I remember I might ask for a FOI to see if I am right.

Puffalicious · 20/04/2022 20:23

It beggar's belief that these DC aren't getting an offer with results like these!

I still can't believe St As haven't contacted DS. Even though he's not going it's pretty ridiculous. They've contacted him twice encouraging him to apply for an academic scholarship (results in hand and way above their required grades, so I suppose that's why) emphasising you don't need an offer/ accept ab offer to apply. It seems all round the wrong way.

Strathclyde are the same, but he actually has an offer from there at least. I just don't get it.🤔

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 22/04/2022 09:22

OMGeeeeee what a nightmare with the new update. Higher Education had been put into my hidden box and so I havent been able to access it. I was FUMING that MN had taken away our board 😂

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 22/04/2022 09:26

@Geamhradh Please feel free to DM me anytime. I promise my name isnt Dave!! Has she decided to firm Bath in the end? DD didnt speak to any other students either at open day although she is on some group chat with other Bath firmers.

Yes you're right Stockpot, I don't really blame Durham or wherever, it's a flawed system made more so by Covid and the exams fiasco. I mentioned an alternative proposed by a thinktank on the Oxbridge thread and it was greated with HORROR by those with children at those esteemed institutions, but it's also been suggested by Helen Thompson (Talking Politics, HSPS prof). This thinktank guy says students should rank ten universities in order, then come results day anyone who has the requisite grades for their top choice gets in or gets put in a lottery if there are too many successful applicants. Helen Thompson argues that once you're the right academic level for Cambridge, any way of distinguishing candidates is inherently unfair.

I think they do this ranking system in Ireland successfully.

My best friend is in the States and however awful UCAS is, the American system is a whole other level of shitshow because you're adding different fees/scholarships into the mix. Plus unlimited number of applications.

Very interesting. DD was interviewed by Prof Helen Thompson. She was the Prof who sat with her head in her hands looking bored shitless, who didnt bother to say goodbye at the end of her interview, just a cold "you can leave the room now". A lottery sounds like a good idea to me.

Valleyofthedollymix · 22/04/2022 12:35

Jeeez that's rude Tango. A lottery would have spared your DD of having to face that. We all know that interviewing is exhausting and random - I've employed people for really arbitrary reasons and your poor DD sounds like she came at the wrong bit of the day.

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango couldn't access either. Thought it was just me !
As we were .. trudging towards the A levels with tired exhausted DCs in tow with offers to meet ... .. really hoping everyone has offers done and dusted... Dd all to aware she's got to get the grades now. One of her friends got feedback back from C and it was brutal so she's asked not to see hers for now which I think is sensible and she needs all her energy and we don't want to go back when forwards is now so important .

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 22/04/2022 14:16

@Valleyofthedollymix She was very last in the day, I suspect a long day for them but ultimately politeness wouldnt have gone a miss. DD knew straight after that she didnt stand a chance.

@doubleshotcappuccino Yes it was in hidden list, I was nearly hyperventilating thinking I will never find out what happened to all of the lovely MN dc! DD hasnt asked for feedback as she just doesnt feel the need to know where she went wrong, its done now and wont serve any benefit to her moving forward.

Our beautiful kitty was hit by a car on Good Friday and sadly passed away. DD is cat mad and the cat was her shadow, we have always joked she thought DD was her Mummy. DD has been upset and struggled to revise, has managed to pull it back today and seems more focused. It is going to be a tense couple of months for us all I suspect 😐

Eightytwenty · 22/04/2022 14:28

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango sorry to hear that news. Hugs.

doubleshotcappuccino · 22/04/2022 15:37

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango really really sorry to hear that. That's heartbreaking. Xxxx

ACloseMatch · 22/04/2022 17:26

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango I'm so sorry about your cat.

DD has withdrawn the UCL application that they emailed a rejection for but didn't bother updating UCAS Angry and so has been able to firm Leeds. Apparently, they can only list one accommodation preference, so she is quite set on doing that asap. I will check if that is the case though - DD1 and DD2 both got to list a few (5 possibly) preferences for theirs.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 22/04/2022 17:28

Thanks both I know she was 'just a cat' but pets really do worm their way into your hearts don't they? Just awful to think she was hit and would have been so scared and hurt. Only shred of comfort is I managed to track the people via FB and they had wrapped her in a blanket and were stroking her and talking to her all the way to the vets. At least she was shown love and warmth in her final moments 😔

Piggywaspushed · 22/04/2022 17:33

Oh, that is so sad . Poor Kitty.

foodledoff · 22/04/2022 17:44

Still smarting from the Durham rejection but on a positive note, DS has just heard that he has an offer from UCL for MSci physics, which has cheered him up just in time for the weekend :)

Piggywaspushed · 22/04/2022 18:21

DS's friend who has the zero offers except York got a rejection from UCL. He has still not heard from Warwick.

Puffalicious · 22/04/2022 19:03

Ah, you're all back! I thought I was the only one still here- I was Billy nae mates for a few days 😆.

So sorry to hear about your kitty Tango. It's so hard 🌹.

It was DS1's last day of school FOREVER today. Exams start on the 28th here, so they're now on exam leave. He's still out with all hos friends celebrating after confetti cannons and water guns today!

We're up early for the Edinburgh offer holder's day tomorrow. He'll be delighted😁but can sleep in the car. Im looking forward to an day in Auld Reekie.

Puffalicious · 22/04/2022 19:07

Great news Foddledoff 👏.

Such a shame about your DC's friend Piggy. His nerves must be shattered.

My friend's daughter got rejected for Law at Strathclyde yesterday (her preferred as she hears the union is wicked 🤣). Their feedback? She had the required (high) grades in hand but this year there were many international students to facilitate! WTF!

She has offers for Edinburgh and Glasgow and is accepting Glasgow, but is a bit flat. It really is pathetic.

readsalotgirl63 · 22/04/2022 20:02

@Puffalicious DD completed her LLB at Glasgow and has just finished her pg diploma at Glasgow - she's had a great time overall so your friends DD will be fine

Letsgoforaskip · 22/04/2022 20:53

I’m so sorry to hear about your cat @TangoWhiskyAlphaTango . That must have been a horrible shock and terribly sad for all of you 💐

Stockpot · 22/04/2022 20:58

Oh I know she will be- excellent course, excellent reputation- and a more prestigious university. Just agog at the explanation of 'We know you're good enough, but our International students are priority '. It's all just a business.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 22/04/2022 21:07

Thank you all you lovely bunch 😘

@foodledoff Fab news on the offer certainly helps numb the sting of rejection.
@Puffalicious I love an open day and having a mooch around, hope you have a great day tomorrow.

Eightytwenty · 22/04/2022 21:11

@Puffalicious hope your DS has had a good day and enjoys tomorrow. DS’ last day too but they go back to school for the last week of term for a leavers ball, prize giving and a few other nice things. It’s nice to have something to look forward to post exams. Am astonished that Strathclyde rejected when Gla/ Ed offered. That is a weird situation though know the former is much more highly rated than it was in my day.

@foodledoff congratulations! That’s a great result. Sod Durham!

@ACloseMatch its exciting getting to the accommodation choices. DS did his this week. Was tricky as you can only choose a certain type of accom (catered or en-suite - and whether you mind sharing - which apparently most first years do regardless).

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango glad you found out that care was given in his dying moments. It’s what everyone and every animal deserves. (Hard stare at Boris Johnson).

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 22/04/2022 21:12

@ACloseMatch Glad she has been able to firm Leeds, screw the others they don't deserve her! Things definitely happen for a reason and I bet she will love it there Leeds is a fab City.

How are all of your DC feeling about impending exams? Have they really started studying? DD was doing great until the bloody cat got killed then she had a melt down but we havent had any tears for two days now so hopefully she is ok. They have finished all of the course content now at College so just full on revision. I will be bloody glad when its over. She flies off to Spain with her Boyfriend the day after they finish and I keep telling her to just think about that and what a relief it will be. I must remember to book results day off work and hopefully we can celebrate 🙏

Yes, DS has the leaver's ball and prize giving in June, but that's it. Then the BIG S6 holiday to Spain with the 'lads'- a rite of passage and will be well deserved.

Strathclyde is more popular for Law I hear. My cousin chose it many years ago- he's now a judge! I chose it as it was better for my course. Lots of DS's mates are going for Engineering and Accountancy (it's no1 ranked in UK for Accountancy).

I don't need to worry about DS1 studying, DS2 is another kettle of fish (S4🙈) and his first exam is next Wednesday and not his favourite- Chemistry 🙄.

All very exciting hearing about choosing accommodation.
