Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

Lots of interviews now done, fingers crossed for lots of offers, but we know it is a tough year and that most applicants will have a bumpy ride. Best of luck everyone!

@coffeeandbiscuittime

So hopefully Sheffield will release offers/waits/rejections this week. Not sure my nerves can hold! Although she is not expecting an offer , she/we have still got hope that she may. Good luck to all.
It is so hard to tell how you have done, fingers crossed for this news!

After going through this twice with my 2 ds who both had 4 interviews and got 2 offers (so far) the only thing that seems definite is there's absolutely no correlation between how your dc FEEL the interview went compared to how the uni rates it! Both my ds seemed to get offers from the interviews which they thought were awful and a couple of the more feel good interviews came to nought. Even harder to judge how Sheffield might go as everyone will have had the same experience with the advance questions.

Nottingham offers started this evening

Lots of Newcastle rejections, we are still on hold

BabbleBee · 09/03/2022 10:26

Oh my goodness!!! DD has had an offer from Birmingham! So she’s got offers from there and HYMS with Keele interview to go.

KingscoteStaff · 09/03/2022 10:41

@BabbleBee That's brilliant! DD is currently planning her 'wander around' morning before the Medic talk at the offer holders' day. It appears to include the cricket ground...

Onewildandpreciouslife · 09/03/2022 11:06

Still waiting on Nottingham - 2 batches of offers released but no news. DD’s last chance for this year

So happy for all those with offers - well done to your DD @BabbleBee

HoneyMobster · 09/03/2022 11:23

Lovely news @BabbleBee - so pleased for your DD 😊

Monkey2001 · 09/03/2022 14:18

Congratulations to mini-Bee @BabbleBee! Star

BabbleBee · 09/03/2022 15:06

Thanks all. This has come at the best time. We are having issues with her college - not sure how to go forward with it but between two teachers they have shattered her confidence.

notmedicmum · 09/03/2022 16:28

Congratulations @BabbleBee!

Solarlantern · 09/03/2022 16:31

Congrats @BabbleBee, good news!

Dagbonunion · 09/03/2022 18:21

I can't stress this enough. I felt as if I'd been so vague and waffly in my interview. I forgot to use specific examples to illustrate a couple of my answers, and in others I felt that I was rambling. I'd prepared myself for rejection and was shocked when an offer turned up! By contrast, I've had job interviews that seemed to go brilliantly and then I didn't get the job. It's notoriously difficult to evaluate your own performance.
opoponax · 09/03/2022 19:08

@coffeeandbiscuittime Sheffield ran over a little bit last year. There was one poster on last year's thread whose DC got their offer a little later but it was still a yes.

opoponax · 09/03/2022 19:11

Just to be clear, they weren't waitlisted or anything, just got their offer a day later.

bimkom · 09/03/2022 20:13
@coffeeandbiscuittime Sheffield ran over a little bit last year. There was one poster on last year's thread whose DC got their offer a little later but it was still a yes.
That was us. They started sending out offers on the Tuesday, and by the weekend it seemed like absolutely everybody except us had received either an offer, rejection or waitlist, and we had heard nothing. We spent the weekend steeling ourselves for a rejection, and then on Monday at 6pm an offer showed up. To stay we were astonished was a major understatement.
So Sheffield were definitely still sending offers a full week after the first batch.

opoponax · 09/03/2022 20:17

I remember @Bimkom. I just didn't want to tag you. We were all so happy when your DS's offer came through.

Monkey2001 · 09/03/2022 20:52

I hope the same thing happens with Sheffield this year, but it does seem that in general medical schools are being much more cautious about offers. So I would expect the offers to be through more quickly than usual because there are fewer of them.

Plymouth released their numbers - I can't remember whether it was on this thread or TSR, but there seems to be significantly fewer offers and more user of waiting lists/hold at all medical schools which are releasing numbers. Which should mean that if your DC is on the Hold/waiting list, they may have got an offer in a normal year and have more chance of a late offer than usual. At least that is what we are hoping!

Nothing from Nottingham as yet and still anxiously settling in for a long wait to hear back from Newcastle

Dc very down about their chances of an offer from Newcastle

Big congrats to all dc you have received offers

Thethingswedoforlove · 10/03/2022 15:05

Congrats to those receiving offers. I am beyond impressed. Does Nottingham have a minimum ucat? My understanding is that they only interview band 1 sj but they don’t publish what the minimum ucat score itself is?

Monkey2001 · 10/03/2022 16:31

@Thethingswedoforlove Nottingham published their scoring algorithm and the SJT had the same weighting as the UCAT score, making it almost impossible to get an interview without a band 1.

seekinglondonlife · 10/03/2022 18:12

Congrats to all those with offers!

DS hasn't heard back from his 2 interviews yet. I want to ask, he doesn't want his non medical choice (pharmacy) if he doesn't get an offer this year, he wants to take a gap year and reapply in the following year. Should he then decline this immediately if he gets two rejections? If he did accept it but then didn't take the place would there be any penalty?

coffeeandbiscuittime · 10/03/2022 19:58

DD is on the waiting list for Sheffield - so some hope still. She is actually ok - as she says it's not a complete rejection!
Thanks for your support - we will now wait for the other 2 at the end of the month.
