Durham 2022 applicants

New thread for those applying to Durham for 2022. What time of year do Durham usually make offers please and do they interview? DS applied early and we are new to all this but are wondering if he has now missed the deadline for ranking Colleges (unlike most of his friends applying who managed not to miss this and did this early on) as he can’t now see this option in the portal or if he hasn’t missed it then is their a deadline for doing this please? I know in previous years college rankings may have been irrelevant. Thanks

Congratulations 🎉

NCTDN · 01/03/2022 21:27

Oops @Blewitt I've only just realised this is in the Durham thread so guess that's where you are asking about Blush

Fruitygal · 01/03/2022 21:34

@Watsername that’s amazing!!!

Blewitt · 02/03/2022 09:02

@NCTDN Durham. Can't remember which college she applied to if that makes a difference

Igglepigglesblankie · 02/03/2022 10:59

Just booked train tickets to get to the open day - was astounded at the cost - once we add in the overnight it’s going to be pretty pricey. I hope DS likes it!! Totally feel for those who are going to have to rush around organising things at last minute. From London the trains were already showing “limited availability” so think what it will be like if you are trying to book a couple of days before.

Super grateful to have heard back and received an offer so shouldn’t really complain. Fingers crossed that everyone hears back quickly and they can get organised for the open day.

Blewitt · 02/03/2022 16:16

@NCTDN Hatfield college.

NCTDN · 02/03/2022 21:25

@Blewitt for liberal arts? I think dd applied for Hatfield too. Not heard anything.

Blewitt · 03/03/2022 10:55

@NCTDN yes, also liberal arts. She's heard from all the other universities - ages ago infact. Getting boring now! I think she is favouring Birmingham but I really want her to see Durham before making final choice, if she gets an offer, the long wait seems to mean she's gone off the boil with it.

NCTDN · 03/03/2022 11:06

@Blewitt where are her other offers?

Blewitt · 03/03/2022 11:23

@NCTDN - Birmingham, Nottingham, Warwick and Exeter.

I was shocked at how expensive it is from Leeds, at little over an hour's journey on the train - but I don't fancy stressing about where to park and rush hour traffic etc with ds having to be there for a specifc time in the morning. Dh is taking him to Newcastle's offer holder day this weekend and is parking near one of the metro stations out of the city, which is easy. It's a later start there though.

But yes, grateful that his department pulled their finger out early - cant believe how many are still waiting...

Fruitygal · 03/03/2022 20:06

If we came by train it would be £450 for three of us

Fruitygal · 03/03/2022 20:07

We are driving, staying overnight and the whole thing is half the price of three train tickets

Watsername · 03/03/2022 21:05

DH will be going with DS on the train, then staying overnight. They have booked the hotel and train.

Acuppaandcake · 04/03/2022 09:22

If we had an overnight stay to factor in, I would have driven for sure. It's just me and ds going since he could only book one guest and I probably won't be able to go to the morning session either.
I'll have a wander round Durham for the morning - it''ll be a nice day off work. DH is from the NE so he doesn't need to reacquaint himself with it!

NCTDN · 14/03/2022 20:41

DD has an email today asking for her to choose options for her course, even though she's not had an offer yet. I think the course choice will affect whether she gets an offer or not.

Peaseblossum22 · 18/03/2022 15:49

For people driving I would recommend using the park and ride which is near the Botanic gardens and the hill colleges, it tends to be less popular. Also get there as early as you can bear!

EwwSprouts · 21/03/2022 15:19

I think we'll be setting off at 6.30am. I'll be the one yawning Grin.

Does anyone know if as the plus 1 there is a parents' 'timetable' for the morning? The only info DS seems to have is turn up at 10am and we'll release you at 1pm to wander loose.

Fruitygal · 21/03/2022 21:13

@EwwSprouts there was something written that was sent to them saying talk for parents and kids at 10 then lab for kids with a look round department and talk to staff for parents then finish at 1 so library tours to book and then colleges look round. Are you doing the whole thing tomorrow? We are doing Tuesday night overnight with dinner out then Wednesday open day

EwwSprouts · 21/03/2022 22:58

@Fruitygal Thanks I made him trawl emails last night but only found 10am start and colleges in the afternoon. Yes doing it all in the day tomorrow.

Fruitygal · 22/03/2022 02:01

@EwwSprouts department page has bits and pieces on it too - have fun 🤩

Wordlewobble · 22/03/2022 11:51

Anyone there today who can feedback for parents and students going tomorrow please? I asked DS to look last night and all I got was a grumpy 10 o clock start I don’t know anything else!?!

neemcheenge · 22/03/2022 14:48

Are Durham doing any virtual offer holder events? My DC got an offer last week with an invitation to offer holder days this week, which didn't work for us coming from London. Too short notice to just drop everything for a daytrip, and he would have to miss a day of school, which is a big ask.

MarchingFrogs · 22/03/2022 16:33

www.durham.ac.uk/visit-us/open-days/undergraduate-povd/

Piecing together info from the paragraph on offer holders for joint honours courses and thos statement - Bookings for our virtual event will launch after our final on-campus event, but don't worry we'll send you an email to remind you! - it would appear that something is being planned?

EwwSprouts · 22/03/2022 21:32

@Wordlewobble I was in the same boat as you! It turned out to be
10am Welcome talk for students and parents by department
11am go to the labs
12.15pm informal coffee and mingle - leave when you want
Afternoon see a few colleges but not all are showing bedrooms.
