Durham 2022 applicants

New thread for those applying to Durham for 2022. What time of year do Durham usually make offers please and do they interview? DS applied early and we are new to all this but are wondering if he has now missed the deadline for ranking Colleges (unlike most of his friends applying who managed not to miss this and did this early on) as he can’t now see this option in the portal or if he hasn’t missed it then is their a deadline for doing this please? I know in previous years college rankings may have been irrelevant. Thanks

my DS seems pretty happy in his Bailey College . All in I think the college system is great . So it definitely seems to have been the right uni choice so far for him. Phew

My DS is living it “living his best life” apparently 🙄 seems to be out drinking the majority of the time 🤦‍♀️ But he’s enjoying his course and even more so the social aspect. He is is stevo… was meant to be JB but got re-allocated which nearly put him off going!!! But he loves it

EwwSprouts · 14/02/2023 19:42

DS is having a good time. Playing much sport for his college and just started playing for the uni. I think he has been surprised by the study workload but is coping.

@mich101 DS is also Stevo but was his first choice. They may have met in the bar! He's gone to afternoon tea today with the principal(?)...cos free food 🙄

mich101 · 14/02/2023 20:12

Haha!!! Free food, who could resist!!

DD is still loving Durham. We came up this afternoon to visit for a few days, and she is making the most of eating out! She was a college rep for the offer holder day today telling everyone the benefits of choosing St John's.

@GoldenRuby Have a lovely time. Let us know which restaurants you rate highly.

GoldenRuby · 16/02/2023 21:01

@EwwSprouts we have just had a wonderful Thai meal at Zen (booking required - it's popular). It's just behind Hotel Indigo in the Elvet area. We also have had lunch at Riverview Kitchen (great salads) and dinner at 19 Twenty by Elvet bridge (burgers, meat skewers and steak - good but not exceptional). I've definitely eaten too much over the last few days!

EwwSprouts · 16/02/2023 21:10

@GoldenRuby Catching up over food is such a lovely thing to do though! Thanks for the recommendations. We love a Thai.

NYE2023 · 17/02/2023 00:49

Another vote for Zen here - we had a really lovely meal when we dropped off in January . As @GoldenRuby says booking is needed . It’s got a garden for summer dining ( which allows dogs)

Fruitygal · 17/02/2023 08:31

We’ve had nice meals at Nandon Thai and a Turkish place which I’ll need to ask daughter the name of.

Popped into Turtle Bay gir a quick meal but food and service was average to poor so I’d give that one a miss.

We tend to use Vennels for breakfast and daughter loves a posh burger place that she’s been to when friends have been over ( again I’ll bed to ask her the name).

We are back up for her late birthday celebration on 2nd March so need to think of where to eat and book somewhere. Might try Zen this time if people rate it.

We took DD for brunch at Flat White today - we didn't need to eat as had breakfast at the hotel. We had to queue outside but DD says the food was worth it. Nicely decorated inside too.

BeeBB · 17/02/2023 21:16

We haven’t had a good meal out or found a nice restaurant in Durham yet. Always a massive queue at Flat Whites (so we have never waited). So might try some of these recommendations on our next visit.

cyclamenqueen · 21/02/2023 00:13

I was up after the end of term at Xmas and had breakfast at flat white. There was no queue and it was mostly locals probably relishing the peace. It was really good, I can see why it’s popular.

The chapter house would be a good second. For Sunday lunch the cellar door is good . Personally I don’t get the hype around Spags but the kids all seem to love it. The Indian opposite Hatfield is very good .

Interesting to hear about college allocations. My DS had an offer before Christmas and sent his choices for colleges in before 20 Jan as requested. He hasn’t firmed yet but hasn’t been given a college allocation yet.

bguthb90 · 21/02/2023 20:57

@Dancingdreamer - still a huge number of applicants awaiting responses from Durham.

I believe, from their website, college allocations don't start until April - presumably they need to have more preferences submitted before they start that process

Shangrilalala · 21/02/2023 22:57

Just back from a lovely weekend and had a fabulous Sunday lunch at Cellar Door- highly rated by us all.

Dancingdreamer · 23/02/2023 20:49

@bguthb90 Thank you that’s helpful. I think he was just hoping that he would get a provisional allocation sooner and before having to make a final university decision. Having said that he would have to firm his other options with no idea of what accommodation he might get!
