Part 4 - A friendly supportive thread for those with DC applying to Oxbridge, its an arduous process to say the least. I suspect we will need some handholding and alcohol for the couple of weeks ahead as our dc have their interviews. For those still waiting to hear I hope news comes soon Flowers

Maths admissions stats for Ox for those that are interested

Juja · 10/01/2022 15:44

@VikingNorthUtsire - thank you for such lovely sentiments - I've also found this thread super helpful - been great to have a place where you know others are going through something similar at the same time.

I've just had DD in a state over a mock that didn't go as she'd hoped due to not realising the implications of constrained choices. It is tough as not having sat GCSEs its really her first full length, full syllabus, exams ever. As I reassured her this is why you have mocks.

Good luck to everyone for the next 24hrs who's waiting to hear from Oxford. If our DC get an offer amazing; if they do not receive an offer Oxford's loss and another institution's gain.

For those waiting to hear from Cambridge hang in there.

nolanscrack · 10/01/2022 15:45

If an Oxford admissions Tutor doesnt know know the difference between Elite and Elitist, then its no wonder so many private school candidates arent even bothering to apply and are going Stateside.

ealingwestmum · 10/01/2022 15:46

Wishing all you Oxford folk and your DC a relaxing (!) evening, as one can have🤞

SandyBayley · 10/01/2022 15:56

Quick off the mark for the analysis of maths admissions to Oxford. You clearly do need to ace the MAT!

CardRoomGreen · 10/01/2022 16:02

DD isn't looking at Oxford, or Maths, but I was curious about the admissions stats regardless. Am I reading it correctly that all scores seem to be significantly down on last year?

Another two weeks for us to wait and I don't think there will be a document like that to read. I'm assuming she won't get an offer, but you never know!

Wow - those admissions stats for math are quite eye opening. Makes you wonder what the kid who scored in the 80s did wrong to be passed over for the kid who scored below 50….

Valleyofthedollymix · 10/01/2022 16:29

It's the one who scored 96-100% who got an interview but no place that I wonder about... did he/she just blow raspberries at the interviewer?

Thisisconfusing · 10/01/2022 16:45

That’s very interest @doubleshotcappuccino do all the departments produce similar and post them now ? I had a quick look for our courses and couldn’t see - I have DT one waiting on chemistry and one biology. Confidence levels not high in getting an offer so would be interested to see the stats! Thanks

Revengeofthepangolins · 10/01/2022 16:57

@Thisisconfusing Most departments do, I think. As I recall, last year history came out the day before - Merton post them up. But they haven't updated history or maths yet today.

Bit gutting for the candidates who aced the MAT but didn't even get an interview

BilberryBaggins · 10/01/2022 16:59

Good luck to everyone waiting for news tomorrow; remember that this is only one step in your child's life journey, and it's not a golden ticket, or a plain ordinary Wonka bar - it's just one decision in a lifetime of decisions. If it's a rejection, then that will open up the possibility of many other doors - I hope everyone gets good news in the morning though!

Panicmode1 · 10/01/2022 17:02

Will be thinking of all of the Oxford candidates (and their parents!) tomorrow - as an Oxford (law) reject myself, I know that there is life after that rejection however much it hurts at the time. In my case, I ended up at a totally different university studying a completely different subject (Russian) - and I met the love of my life on my second day, so it turned out ok. Smile.

And... I wish the end of the month would hurry up for those of us waiting on Cambridge...Grin

goodbyestranger · 10/01/2022 17:22

nolanscrack that's not why those kids aren't bothering to apply.

SandyBayley · 10/01/2022 17:25

We ought to think about a new thread as a nice things start happening tomorrow this one will fill up fast...,

goodbyestranger · 10/01/2022 17:28

I couldn't watch the whole twenty minutes - far too much repetition. The guy was trying to be nice to those who don't get offers. I realise that the word 'hero' has become devalued in the pandemic, but I certainly don't consider my kids heroic for merely applying to Oxford. The tutor bangs on about his own rejection a bit too much too. It's pretty sugary overall. I'm not clear that his view about tiny divisions across all applicants holds much water, although it's obviously incredibly thin at the lower margins of offer/ upper margins of rejection.

Good luck tomorrow to the Oxford applicants tomorrow. I certainly do agree that luck can play a part, and even not being able to sleep ahead of the interview or being incredibly nervous can mess things up.

goodbyestranger · 10/01/2022 17:29

tomorrow

Juja · 10/01/2022 17:32

@Thisisconfusing Merton and Keble are good at posting up subject admissions feedback. Mansfield and Somerville do too but you seem to have to google each subject individually - maybe just because they are currently updating their pages for tomorrow?

nolanscrack · 10/01/2022 17:34

"Those kids",says all we need to know about you goodbye..

nolanscrack · 10/01/2022 17:36

Of course children arent heroic for applying to Oxbridge, total nonsense..

goodbyestranger · 10/01/2022 17:42

'Those kids' = the 'private school candidates' referred to in your post nolanscrack. Grammatically fine to refer to them as kids. They are kids. The ones you were trying to make a point about.

goodbyestranger · 10/01/2022 17:43

So basically it doesn't tell you anything about me at all :)

goodbyestranger · 10/01/2022 17:44

I was at a top independent myself in any event.

Albeit on a direct grant scholarship.

Gottasinggottadance · 10/01/2022 18:43

Does anyone know what time UCAS are likely to update with Oxford offers tomorrow? Suspect not but just wondering so I don't badger dc every 5 minutes.

Good luck to everyone waiting, parents and DC alike!

SandyBayley · 10/01/2022 18:47

Could be as early as 8am but I'd assume more like 9am inwards.
