Part 4 - A friendly supportive thread for those with DC applying to Oxbridge, its an arduous process to say the least. I suspect we will need some handholding and alcohol for the couple of weeks ahead as our dc have their interviews. For those still waiting to hear I hope news comes soon Flowers

She has done well enough in the MAT to get an interview, there is a higher and lower cut off above which everyone is interviewed and below which no-one is interviewed. Between that, there is discretion. She will get her MAT shortly after offers day in January but watch her Imperial and Warwick offers closely until then, I recall DS had an Imperial offer early in January and Warwick changed their offer so DS knew he had done OK in the MAT

PhiRhoSigma · 16/12/2021 17:32

That's interesting, is the contextual offer related to the school? I didn't know that unis would explicitly tell you if an offer was adjusted compared to their standard offer.
Our DC has offers from several other unis now, and they all look like the regular offer grades. The school is at best middling, on GCSEs it's below national average, although not by much so don't know if that would even be considered for contextual adjustment.
I understand the MAT is really tough, and it's really competitive to get in for Maths, so she must have done well to get to interviews.

beeswain · 16/12/2021 17:48

@carben would you be able to share Warwick's offer? Only asking because if it was made after they received MAT results it will be a reduced offer because of her MAT score. I don't think Warwick give contextual offers for Maths. Message me if you would rather not put it on the board

carben · 16/12/2021 18:15

@beeswain when I get home from work I will try and get it for you. I've not read it myself she just read it out.

I just put the details of post code and school on the Warwick website and it came up with

Overall result: Yes
Should you submit an application to the University for 2022 entry using the information provided, your application would receive a widening participation flag, which means that you may be eligible to receive a contextual offer. This depends on other factors, for example, your predicted grades and studying the right set of subjects for your chosen degree course.

DS has just had an email from Imperial saying they will be making him an offer - so that takes the pressure off a Cambridge result a little bit as he already has an offer from Bristol.....and although I think he will be very upset if he doesn't get an offer from C, (partly because all 6 of his closest friends all had interviews too), I think that the course at Imperial is where is heart is.

Well done to all getting the Imperial offers!

Frankl · 17/12/2021 15:00

After 2 weeks and a half of many interviews (including second and third interviews by other O colleges) we are finally done!

DD1 (C Law) said hers was ok, but she feels C is not the right uni for her, so we shall see what happens if she recieves an offer (which she says will not happen).

Regarding O, DD2 (PPE) and DD3 (Biochem) are out of the game, as they have recieved full rides for the U.S! Dd2 is heading to University of Penn for Political Science, while dd3 will go to Columbia for Bio chemistry. Thankfully the universities did not require the SAT nor the ACT, because there was no way we could afford the tests for them.

We are extremely excited, and dd1 and dd4 processing this way better than I expected, they are supporting their sisters really well.

As for DD4 (Oxford Earth Sciences), she feels her first 2 interviews went bad while the third one went well.

So, 2/4 are done with the university offer process, while the other 2 will find out in January

Big congratulations to all DC's for reaching this stage, no matter the result

Stockpot · 17/12/2021 15:11

That’s fantastic frankl!

How do US admissions work without SAT/ACT tests? What do they go on? It really impressive for both DDs to get full scholarships.

Frankl · 17/12/2021 15:23

@Stockpot

That’s fantastic frankl!

It is because of covid, many universities said they were not required and that the students would not be in a disadvantage in comparison with the candidates who sat them.

They sent 2 essays, lots of letters of recommendation from their teachers and their part time jobs to demonstrate their academic and extracurricular skills, as well as their independent projects and extracurricular activities from school. Their full ride scholarships are because we provided proofs of actually needing them because of our income and their academic merit.

Stockpot · 17/12/2021 15:30

Well done to them. I hope they have wonderful time!

I also hope they can afford to fly home for the summers and Xmas break. I am sure you will miss them!

Panicmode1 · 17/12/2021 15:34

Wow @frank that's amazing. Huge congrats to half of your DDs 😁
