Thought I would start a new thread as part one is nearly full and found thread one to be of great support.

So its deadline week this week for our applicants then the nervous wait begins to find out of they have made it to interview. DD applying for HSPS at Cambridge. We know it is a long shot but got to be in it to win it and she is very keen to try. Looking at the admissions info it does not look as though she will need to sit a test prior but all the best to those who will have to.

Well, that’s a bit mean, Toadstoolstew. It’s always an achievement to get an offer. They don’t just deal out offers to anybody at an “academic” school. Also, if you’ve done well at Westminster, then surely you are indeed very academic and therefore deserve your offer?

A couple of ds’s compatriots were at Westminster. Their parents seemed very proud at graduation!

DottyHarmer · 12/11/2021 12:17

No teachers here either, but I know what a pp meant.

Dd called me when she first started to say how posh everyone was. The funny thing is that people at her school thought we were posh (not rich - just differently weird, really), but everything’s relative and dd now thinks we’re the Royle Family Grin . Someone asked if she was “scared” going to school (!) . No, not scared, just bored in a lower middle class cultural desert (which is what really disadvantages state school pupils).

Piggywaspushed · 12/11/2021 14:55

In other news, DS has an interview! HSPS Selwyn.

It's a bit mean in a way (though I obviously didn't say what I felt out loud). I'm sorry, but Westminster appears to be pretty much an Oxbridge factory. If you have a very supportive and well-educated wealthy background (as that boy had), are sent to an extremely expensive school which focuses on academics, with small classes, motivated children and the best teachers, how can it be such a big achievement? My DC tells me that they're surrounded by loads of people from Westminster. In one of the hardest to get into colleges.

Congrats Piggy's DS! And everybody with interviews. Still early days so there's hope for the rest of us x

Hi there - sorry I've not read the whole thread. DS (state school kid) has applied to Cambridge for Engineering. 2 questions:

  1. Do they find out if they've got a Cambridge Engineering interview today? Not heard anything yet.
  2. Why are other universities interviewing now if application deadline for all other engineering courses (except Oxbridge) isn't until 26th Jan? Bit worried as he won't be applying for his other eng options until January. Have I missed something?

Thanks

SandyBayley · 12/11/2021 15:59

@printmeanicephoto

  1. No, not necessarily today. Depends on course and college.

  2. Those universities that are interviewing already are just being efficient. Doesn't mean that someone who puts in an application today doesn't have an equal chance.

Welcome to the thread. We're a friendly bunch.

printmeanicephoto · 12/11/2021 16:25

Thanks SandyBayley! Panic attack over!

To those of you mentioning the ENGAA earlier - DS found it really hard too and isn't holding out much hope. He got some fab mock A'level results today, but obviously that's only one part of the picture and no predictor of getting an offer. The application process so far has all been a bit stressful really!

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 12/11/2021 16:30

Fabulous news!! DD still waiting for Clare to get in touch its starting to get a bit stressful now where neither of us were that stressed before, just wish they would hurry up! Shame they don't all do it on the same day...ho hum!

Well done Piggys DS. Yes it definitely would have been easier if all the Cambridge or Oxford interview invites and rejections were all sent out on the same day. If a DC hasn’t got an invite I hope they are also notified at the same point in time to allow them to move on no point in stringing it out.

Me too. I know DD will be upset not to get an interview but at least then she will know and can move on and focus on her other choices. The pressure of a potential interview is quite tough at this stage with all of the extra reading / prep she is doing especially with mocks looming after Xmas.

Have any DC heard anything from Bath yet? DD has had offers from all her other choices but nothing from Bath yet. Not sure if they are notoriously slower to give out offers.

SandyBayley · 12/11/2021 16:55

If it cheers anyone up waiting for Cambridge emails, the odds of a Cambridge interview are typically better than for Oxford. But once interviewed I think the odds of an offer are better for Oxford. I'll see if I can dig out the stats.

And then you get the issue with Cambridge 'high' offers that they are banking on not everyone meeting.

SandyBayley · 12/11/2021 17:04

For Cambridge 75% of applicants are invited to interview. For Oxford it's more like 45%.

DahliaMacNamara · 12/11/2021 17:06

Congratulations to those with interview invitations in hand. It's such a drawn-out process, and while these threads are supportive, sometimes it's disheartening to see others get early invitations when your DC haven't heard back yet.
I don't know if this will help, but last year DD's Oxford college/subject didn't issue invitations until 7th December, ie the last possible time they could have done so. That was one helluva wait. I do remember seeing rejections on the thread, so I don't think candidates are kept dangling.

VikingNorthUtsire · 12/11/2021 17:08

Congratulations @Piggywaspushed Jr

mustardpot13 · 12/11/2021 17:15

Yes congrats to all with invites! I think it is still a shame that they cant have a trip to Oxford or Cambridge. Most people enjoy it regardless of the outcome.

Piggywaspushed · 12/11/2021 17:15

Bath have been quoted as saying no offers til January on some thread or the other.
