Oxbridge Aspirants 2022...Part 2...applications submitted now the tense wait!

Thought I would start a new thread as part one is nearly full and found thread one to be of great support.

So its deadline week this week for our applicants then the nervous wait begins to find out of they have made it to interview. DD applying for HSPS at Cambridge. We know it is a long shot but got to be in it to win it and she is very keen to try. Looking at the admissions info it does not look as though she will need to sit a test prior but all the best to those who will have to.

Missed off bus. Not good at this game 😱

SandyBayley · 05/11/2021 14:18

@Horace123 - I approve, my alma mater! A fine city to be a student in.

DD is grumbling about excited students getting messages about offers in lessons and feeling very left out. I did tell her that she knew this would happen and said she was ok with it 😬

PermanentTemporary · 05/11/2021 14:24

How fantastic @Horace123! Even the straightforward offers sound daunting but I'm delighted to hear about it.

mumsneedwine · 05/11/2021 14:28

@SandyBayley get her to add a 5th (if not already). She'll get an offer v quickly 😊

Piggywaspushed · 05/11/2021 15:16

We've only got 3 choices down atm sandy. Might try to get DS to add 2 more this weekend. That said, I hear Bath doesn't offer til January and that will probably be one.

One of Dds friends was moaning it wasn't fair that DD had offers already. Dd then pointed that friend had yet to submit her UCAS form

Stockpot · 05/11/2021 15:46

DD has not heard from Edinburgh. She applied for Geography.
She also applied to St Andrew’s. As an English applicant, I don’t know if it was very strategic if numbers have been capped.

Valleyofthedollymix · 05/11/2021 15:50

Mine has applied to St Andrew's too - I had no idea about the cap. Though have just googled and it's a cap on increasing the numbers by more than 6.5% rather than capping it where it is. What difference it will make, I don't know. Too late but a shame because he actually wants St A more than Cambridge (or so he says).

That said, he hasn't actually visited any of them. Of course.

Puffalicious · 05/11/2021 16:40

DS had an unconditional from Edinburgh about 2 weeks ago (and Strathclyde offering an £8000 scholarship which is nice) so I presumed they were quite swift with their offers. Still awaiting St A's and Glasgow. The next 3 ish weeks waiting on Oxford decision will be the worst!

Puffalicious · 05/11/2021 16:55

Congrats to all with offers. It's such a weight off.

mumsneedwine · 05/11/2021 17:59

BMAT resit for people who couldn't finish (or start) it. If had difficulties then just get 'special consideration'. Utterly unfair and going to affect so many students.

Stockpot · 05/11/2021 19:15

My DD says the same @Valleyofthedollymix

I think the place uses charm and atmosphere without the same intimidation factor of Oxbridge.

Chilldonaldchill · 05/11/2021 19:26

I get that this is awful and difficult. It affects everyone but no one knows quite how it affects them as an individual and everyone assumes it will affect their cohort more disadvantageously than the other cohort. But - without trying to minimise the issues and I do totally get that at this stage of a student's life everything feels hugely important - it's not much different from pretty much all ST application processes being stopped last year, no interviews and lots of people doing "self assessment tickbox exercises" in order to rate themselves as suitable for a training number. The NHS is a pretty crap employer and the sort of shambles these students are experiencing to get onto the start of that ladder feels a bit like "start as you mean to go on". I do feel for them. But there are students moaning on TSR that they can't possibly do an exam on Wednesday because they won't be ready (but apparently they were ready last Wednesday?). It just feels as though they have no idea what the next 40-50 years of their life is going to be like if this derails their coping ability so much. I appreciate I'm probably being unfair. It's been a crap couple of years and this was their chance to show what they can do. But, given that the shambles has already happened, this seems like (probably) the least worst way of trying to solve it. (Assuming they do provide a new paper).
Chilldonaldchill · 05/11/2021 19:29

Sorry I meant to post this on the other board.

Gottasinggottadance · 05/11/2021 20:28

Have been lurking for a while, as I have a DC who has applied for Oxford. Getting a place seems a massive long shot but we will all be really disappointed if DC doesn't get an interview at the very least - wondering when we will hear? Dc has been offered an unconditional offer for Glasgow (we are in Scotland so already has highers) though which was v exciting and unexpected - thought it would be ages before we heard anything.

mumsneedwine · 05/11/2021 20:37

@Chilldonaldchill not sure you fully understand what's happened. Everyone should have had the same time to sit the same exam last Wednesday. However some did, some kept getting kicked off due to technical difficulties, some lost answers after submission, some never got on at all. All (except the ones who never go on) will be judged by their BMAT Unis using this exam. So it's not like the whole cohort was affected. Some had minor issues, some none at all and some had a ridiculous situation.
Some students don't know they have to resit the exam on Weds and won't do until Monday. An exam that determines whether they get interviews at their chosen Unis. It should be a level playing field and it is now anything but.

Puffalicious · 05/11/2021 21:21

Great news gottadance hope DS gets his Glasgow soon. Thought he may have heard since other Scottish unis have offered. Hopefully soon.

ACloseMatch · 06/11/2021 00:07

DD got an email today saying to hold some dates in early December for possible interview. Eek! She will be sooo crushed if she doesn't get one now.

BilberryBaggins · 06/11/2021 00:10

Just gatecrashing the thread to say to anyone who felt their entrance papers didn’t go well, dd was placed in Band 4 (ie the lowest) - which fortunately she didn’t know till the day before offers came out.

She’s in her 1st term at Oxford.

It’s not all about the exam!!!

BobbyGentry · 06/11/2021 01:54

.

MareofBeasttown · 06/11/2021 09:09

Feeling a bit sad today as DS has begun studying for upcoming tests rightaway without even the luxury of a little break. His school is tough on them and Further Maths at A level is a killer. ( not implying that other subject choices are not equally hard).

SayYouDontMind · 06/11/2021 09:11

My DS applied to Oxford, St A, Edinburgh and Glasgow and hasn't heard anything yet and wasn't really expecting to. He's already got his Highers (5 x As) and is predicted 3 As at Advanced Highers. Is it only certain subjects that are making these earlier offers? He's choosing a mix of PPE, Economics & IR, Philosophy/Politics. I know we'll hear in a couple of weeks whether he's got an interview or not at Oxford but wasn't expecting to get any offers on the others until after January.

Gizmo98765 · 06/11/2021 09:35

@ACloseMatch is this for Oxford or Cambridge and what subject and college please?

DS has couple of interviews lined up with other Uni’s but not heard anything from his top three yet (including Cambridge). DS yr13 England.

mich101 · 06/11/2021 10:49

Hi, new to this! DS year 13 and has applied for Engineering at Cambridge. He left starting any Engaa practice until a couple of weeks ago 🤦‍♀️ So sat a few past papers… which he said went fine but I saw his scores and were pretty low! He said although really hard he felt he did ok on actual exam day… so who knows!! He as an offer from Sheffield (his 3rd choice) so far. Well done to everyone else on offers and good luck to those waiting patiently!!

Gottasinggottadance · 06/11/2021 11:05

Sayyoudontmind, I'm new to this as dc is my eldest - but I guess it must depend on the subject as to whether unis make offers at this stage. DC has applied for a science subject - I don't know if this is possibly less popular than some subjects.

Best of luck to everyone waiting.
