Thought I would start a new thread as part one is nearly full and found thread one to be of great support.

So its deadline week this week for our applicants then the nervous wait begins to find out of they have made it to interview. DD applying for HSPS at Cambridge. We know it is a long shot but got to be in it to win it and she is very keen to try. Looking at the admissions info it does not look as though she will need to sit a test prior but all the best to those who will have to.

Congratulations to your dd SirVix, sounds unlikely to be a mistake!

badasscafe1 · 05/11/2021 09:46

@ProggyMat @Horace123 Edinburgh Classics bus has left station- DD first offer through this morning!

Geamhradh · 05/11/2021 09:48

And Politics and IR!
DD just got offer from Lancaster. 85% in her exams (she's expected to get a straight 100 if not 100 with distinction)
I like Lancaster. Grin
Congratulations to everyone else!

SirVixofVixHall · 05/11/2021 09:50

I have read it and it all seems fine. A very nice surprise that it is so early. 🙂

PermanentTemporary · 05/11/2021 10:04

Exciting day badass and geam Smile

ProggyMat · 05/11/2021 10:08

@badasscafe1 Whoop! Well done to your DC! What subject?
And yes, the bus has just pulled in at our stop too! Smile

badasscafe1 · 05/11/2021 10:10

pure classics here..... 3 year....

ProggyMat · 05/11/2021 10:11

@badasscafe1 Apologies - Classics Blush
DD or DS?

Shadedog · 05/11/2021 10:11

Ds applied to Edinburgh too so I’ll have to casually question him later (he’s definitely sick of me - I mithered him yesterday about making sure he got to the exam room in plenty of time like he’s a 6yo). He has an offer from Newcastle already (BBB or BBC with A in EPQ). I had heard Edinburgh was traditionally quite late so it’s exciting to hear.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/11/2021 10:13

@Lessofallthisunpleasantness

Hi, new here. I have a question. My DD decided relatively late to apply to Oxford. She has put that application in but has not put her other 4 applications in yet. Would any of you recommend waiting to find out if she has an interview at Oxford before putting the other applications in or just put them in? She isn't quite decided about which to pick as her other four. We haven't been able to visit any of them but they are all kind of big major city ones so I am not sure if a visit would help anyway.
I think she can do whatever she's most comfortable with, so long as she makes the deadline. I suppose one consideration is whether any of the other courses are likely to interview - all of my DDs did, so having them a bit spread out with three inc Cambridge before Xmas and two after was good.
ProggyMat · 05/11/2021 10:29

@badasscafe1 I didn’t realise there was a 3 year degree. DD applied for Classics MA : 4 years.

badasscafe1 · 05/11/2021 10:33

@ProggyMat my bad-- was putting in an Oxbridge context (ie DD is already studying Greek and Latin) so not the 4 year course

ProggyMat · 05/11/2021 10:37

My DD is too but I didn’t realise there was a 3 year course?
I can remember reading that there was an opportunity to start in Yr2 - not sure if it was Edinburgh or Glasgow- but I wondered how that would work with ‘first year halls’ etc.

Horace123 · 05/11/2021 10:49

@badasscafe1 Yay! Well done to badasscafe junior! Are you in Scotland? We are also waiting for an Edinburg bus but a bit nervous because of the cap the government imposed last year on numbers of English students for Scottish unis.

I won’t see DS now for 10 days (super excited as heading off this evening to a former red list country to see my family who I haven’t seen since mid 2019) so hope he (1) manages to actually upload the written stuff for Oxford, (2) checks emails and UCAS and (3) keeps me updated.

Do universities do early rejections as well as early offers? Do kids get emails or do they need to check UCAS every day? DS got promising looking communication from Durham but it just said “We are actively considering your application”. Ggrr.

@ProggyMat are you regretting getting us on to the bus analogy??

@Geamhradh and @SirVixofVixHall Congrats - very exciting news. Sorry if I’ve missed anyone - having trouble seeing everything on phone.

badasscafe1 · 05/11/2021 10:59

@Horace123 we're in England-- and no idea about rejection notices.... not the progressed in my thinking- today's offer took me by surprise, suddenly all very real!

SirVixofVixHall · 05/11/2021 11:17

Congratulations to those young people getting much wanted offers. Smile .
This is my eldest child so all new to me, how long is the wait normally ? I was expecting it to be next Spring but it seems it varies ?

ProggyMat · 05/11/2021 11:40

@Horace123 DD is a ‘sharer’ so sent a text this morning
Perhaps DS is caught up in the excitement of going away and isn’t checking his emails?
Hope he has a lovely time!
I like the bus analogy - it’s the only thing keeping me going through this exhausting process!
Well done to all offer holders and keep the faith to all still waiting for the first one- they’ll be along soon!

Valleyofthedollymix · 05/11/2021 12:05

Coming in here. DS is applying to Cambridge for Geography. Totally sees it as just another university on his UCAS and worth a punt. He's not a stellar candidate who lives and breathes his subject, he's just a lovely bright person who I'm sure will do fine anywhere.

My god he's lazy though. Whenever I suggest any extra work he just says why would I do that. He's the most ruthlessly pragmatic 17 year old on the planet - it's all about going to a good university with minimal effort. It's a sort of skill, I suppose.

He has no written work to hand in or any additional exams so it really is a low investment application. I think he's right not to be too invested as it is such a lottery - I went to Oxford assuming that there had been a terrible error in letting me in and it was amazing how many mediocre people there were there and how many brilliant people at other universities.

In addition to DS's laziness we're being very light touch parents at the moment (polite way of saying borderline negligent) because his sister is ill. I feel guilty but I think DS is very happy we're off his case.

Valleyofthedollymix · 05/11/2021 12:05

Oh and he's got offers from Bristol and Manchester either of which would be great.

MareofBeasttown · 05/11/2021 12:19

Well done to those who have got offers! I would rest easier if DS got an offer from at least his 3rd choice uni.

PermanentTemporary · 05/11/2021 12:19

Feeling you on the light touch Valley - my elderly and cognitively impaired Mum is in hospital and I'm managing her affairs, and I have a newish boyfriend I want to see, so ds just has to get on with it. I comfort myself by thinking in most other eras he'd be in the militia and thinking about marriage.

Chilldonaldchill · 05/11/2021 12:27

@SirVixofVixHall

DD went through this last year. I think it's very variable but if it helps... She got two offers virtually by return of post (but her predicted grades significantly exceeded their standard offer). Bristol came through after about 2.5 or 3 weeks if I recall correctly (about 10 days after the on hold notice). Cambridge obviously came on results day on January (you know in advance when that will be). Durham rejected her but she didn't hear that till April.
Horace123 · 05/11/2021 13:08

@ProggyMat and @badasscafe1 The bus has arrived!!!! DS texted during lunch to say he has an offer from Edinburgh! He needs 34 points with 665 at higher level. I really can't see him not meeting that so we are over the moon! A bit weird that they don't specify that Latin has to be at least a 6 but I've just checked their website and this is their standard offer. I am so excited I'm almost purring.

Proggy - sorry, my earlier post was a bit rushed - I'm the one off on holiday for a week. DS staying here with DH and DD. Glad he messaged about Edinburgh before my flight.

ProggyMat · 05/11/2021 13:17

@Horace123 Yayyy!!!
The confusion was probably my fault Blush
Lovely news just before your holiday!

ealingwestmum · 05/11/2021 13:41

We’ll done Horacejunior!

Looking forward to hearing from any of you waiting for the language to depart. Or is it arrive? Grin
