Thought I would start a new thread as part one is nearly full and found thread one to be of great support.

So its deadline week this week for our applicants then the nervous wait begins to find out of they have made it to interview. DD applying for HSPS at Cambridge. We know it is a long shot but got to be in it to win it and she is very keen to try. Looking at the admissions info it does not look as though she will need to sit a test prior but all the best to those who will have to.

Oh, I hope no one gets it as bad as I did . I think days 6-10 are often the worst, hate to tell you...

Feel better soon! Lots of rest!

Geamhradh · 27/10/2021 07:34

Hope all sick people feel better soon.
DD sent in another supplementary form yesterday (about Covid disruption?)
About to tackle the writing.
I joined (and quickly left) the WIWIKAU FB group. Whilst its mission statement may be informing parents/students about university in general, the page is full of horror stories of a non academic variety ranging from mouldy flats at one end to horrific abuse at the other, with much of the middle ground being occupied by parents and kids crying all weekend when the time comes to go back, and parents going to get their kids who are dropping out. Confused

I find it quite stressful too and there is a man there who mansplains to everyone. Hmm. I think it has been particularly as you describe since TAGs when a whole off shoot 'protest' group got invented and whole new levels of indignation have been reached. But it still has some plus points although, on the whole, MN is a better source of info, once curated!

It was useful for me yesterday to find out that a bus pass for students in Bath is £350! I shall add that to my list of reasons why Bath shouldn't be DS's second choice (he doesn't want it to be anyway but I am keener).

Some of the advice on WIWIKAU is great : some of it is terrible...

Ooh, hadn't realised there was infighting and mansplaining. Sigh. I did see the thread about the bus pass. I'll stick to here I think. Not often we get to say MN is a voice of calm reason!
Piggywaspushed · 27/10/2021 09:04

Well, small corners!

MareofBeasttown · 27/10/2021 09:34

Absolutely not joining that group. I will remain in blissful ignorance here.

If DS has managed to move countries and schools at age 16, I am going to assume he can handle most of what unis will throw at him.

doubleshotcappuccino · 27/10/2021 10:09

@Piggywaspushed am I looking at the wrong info ? I thought Bath freedom travel pass was £192. We were watching YouTube videos of Bath students last night .. looks beautiful and a welcome distraction from thinking about the C word !

I wouldn't be surprised if £350 was incorrect. The DD in question seems to have a rather loose grip on finances ,along with other issues!

doubleshotcappuccino · 27/10/2021 13:24

@Piggywaspushed ditto here !

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 27/10/2021 14:11

Hmmmmm DD second choice is Bath but was speaking to a friend yesterday who is a lecturer and she was saying how expensive Bath is. I think we will need to look into it as I am not flush by any means and will not be able to financially support her at Uni (she does have a small trust fund to give her a monthly lump sum though). Cambridge would be the cheapest for us as DD would be entitled to a bursary. Strange that the best Uni would also be the cheapest but I suppose its because its a rich Uni. We will definitely be looking into Liverpool & Nottingham more closely if she doesnt get into C.

We pay accommodation for DS1 in Lincoln so won't want to fund DS2 disproportionately. Lincoln is quite cheap. It's definitely an attraction of Sheffield!

Horace123 · 27/10/2021 14:37

@ProggyMat College email has arrived - just as well because the instructions about written work are different to those on the website. Thanks for the heads up.

@SandyBayley Sorry you DD has been under the weather - hopefully she'll be 100% and well rested for the medicine exams next week.

ProggyMat · 27/10/2021 14:44

@Horace123 Yay! Smile
DD is going to get her’s emailed over next week- after the CAT!

Puffalicious · 28/10/2021 15:35

Don't know why I'm a bit on edge today- email arrived saying DS being considered for Mansfield college. Standard email but it's made it all a bit real!

No, he applied for Mansfield, but it's just taken ages to get any direct correspondence from them. We've had 2 unconditional offers in before Oxford even replied.

Excited - Ds has had his first offer - AAA from Birmingham (standard Compsci offer). Am very proud and happy about that one.
