Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

As we press the "send and pay" buttons on UCAS, we wish all our DC the best of luck in this tough year with so much uncertainty.

Birmingham interview done, and the article to be discussed in the Barts interview has arrived.

That's great about Bristol @HoneyMobster!

HoneyMobster · 19/01/2022 20:55

@Puffalicious - this is the thread I think you want 😊 Ask away...

BunnyRuddington · 20/01/2022 17:20

@HoneyMobster that's absolutely amazing! DS missed out on Bristol by 30 pts but he knew it was a risky choice.

4 interviews and one offer by the 3rd week in January is stellar.

HoneyMobster · 20/01/2022 17:30

You're very kind @BunnyRuddington - what was the final Bristol cut off. I think DD just edged it 😬

BunnyRuddington · 20/01/2022 21:40

I believe it was 2830. I read that on here fairly early on so DS was prepared for his rejection. He got 2800 Band 2.

HoneyMobster · 20/01/2022 22:17

Oh you're talking about last year @BunnyRuddington - I was wondering where the cut off would be this year....

BunnyRuddington · 21/01/2022 07:40

No, definitely this year. Someone out the cut off was that not long after the applications had gone in Smile

HoneyMobster · 21/01/2022 07:44

I don't think that's right @BunnyRuddington - there have been rejections and there have been interview invites. There are also a group above 2830 who have not been invited yet so the cut off might rise a bit. DD got 2880 and has an invite.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 21/01/2022 07:47

A girl at DD's school got an Oxford offer with a 26XX Ucat. Weird to think she wouldn't interview at Bristol (or many other med schools for that matter) with that score.

BunnyRuddington · 21/01/2022 07:52

Well done to her though Midlife Smile

HoneyMobster · 21/01/2022 07:52

It is a bit all over the place but I guess UCAT measures specific skills and attributes. It's also a case of good day / bad day.

KingscoteStaff · 21/01/2022 07:57

So far on TSR, lowest Bristol UCAT with an interview is 2880.

I did have a list of the highest UCATs scores that have received a rejection rather than an 'On hold', but I've lost track of it. Certainly there are lots of 'On hold' 2850-2870s with their fingers crossed for another tranche of interview invitations.

HoneyMobster · 21/01/2022 07:59

That's what I thought @KingscoteStaff - limbo us a terrible place to be.

Newcastle interview for DD this morning.

KingscoteStaff · 21/01/2022 08:22

Fingers crossed for her HM - DD has Newcastle and Barts next week, with Bristol the week after. And THEN heads down for the next set of mocks the week after half term!

I was heartened to listen in to the exuberant 'Where shall we go after exams?' Zoom call last night - who knew teens still go to Ayia Napa and Zante just like we did!

HoneyMobster · 21/01/2022 08:34

I am also excited for the post exams fun. After the disappointments of Summer 2020 for our DC they deserve a summer of fun in 2022. I think DD is planning Greece but not party Greece.

Monkey2001 · 21/01/2022 08:52

DS2 (Y13) is full of environmental concern and disapproves of going abroad! DS1 and friends are going to Sicily in the summer.

I went to work on a building site in Birmingham for the summer.
Different worlds, I guess.

KingscoteStaff · 21/01/2022 09:47

Sorry @NoNotHimTheOtherOne - didn't mean to suggest that foreign trips were normal in the 80s. I paid for mine with my 3 years of earnings as a Saturday girl in Boots.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 21/01/2022 10:04

DD is keen to do a bit of travelling in the Summer. She's been hoarding her allowance for the last couple of years and has also been applying for jobs at some festivals (including Leeds) - and I guess they'll all have access to their CTFs too.

Her original plan was to go inter-railing with 5 mates but I've managed to persuade her that's not a great idea.... so she's now more sensibly planning to go with just one other (a prospective medic by coincidence).

This cohort deserve a bit of fun after the disruption and stresses they've faced in the last 2 years. I was inter-railing through Greece when I got my IB results back in the mid 80s. I remember drinking a lot of Ouzo that epic night......

On another note, I hope the Newcastle interview went/goes well this morning @HoneyMobster

HoneyMobster · 21/01/2022 10:25

@NoNotHimTheOtherOne - I worked in M&S the summer after I did A Levels and saved money for inter-railing. We got as far as Istanbul.

DD has saved money from her various jobs and birthday/Christmas to fund her holiday. She's hoping to get some work at a major sporting event which pays very well.

HoneyMobster · 21/01/2022 13:44

Newcastle done. 30 minutes. Very nice interviewers and broadband connection held up. DD happy.

Presumably she did better in the BMAT?

Oxford won't know her UCAT score. UCAT scores are only sent to medical/dental schools that require UCAT and that the student has applied to.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 21/01/2022 21:42

Yes - I'm well aware of that @NoNotHimTheOtherOne

I think we should all take comfort from the fact that our DCs can have good days and bad days.... and some people see huge potential where others don't. Nothing is black and white when it comes to Med School applications!

opoponax · 21/01/2022 21:57

The BMAT and UCAT are very different exams so it's not surprising that someone could do much better in one than the other. I don't think it is that unusual for someone to get an Oxbridge offer and not have a stellar UCAT or even go on to get any other offers. It possibly just means that some might be suited to one type of course more than another. Different med schools are looking for different things. That has to be a good thing.
