Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

As we press the "send and pay" buttons on UCAS, we wish all our DC the best of luck in this tough year with so much uncertainty.

Congratulations @SandyBayley🎉, although I think all of us were expecting that outcome for her! That will take the pressure off the interviews to come and I can be glad that one of the Newcastle interviewees will need their place😉!! I think someone has a Dundee offer, so this is the second.

... will NOT need their place!

@Monkey2001 - you're very kind. She is smart and hardworking but then again there are an awful lot of smart and hardworking candidates every year. Can't guarantee she wouldn't have Newcastle as her insurance but she needs to get an offer first!

KingscoteStaff · 11/01/2022 13:03

Well done your girl @SandyBayley!!!

opoponax · 11/01/2022 14:15

Congratulations to your DD @SandyBayley. Did she get her first choice college?

SandyBayley · 11/01/2022 15:05

Thanks @opoponax - she got an offer from college she was allocated to for her 2nd interview. She's rather taken with it so alls we'll than ends well Smile

FanSpamTastic · 11/01/2022 15:18

Congratulations @SandyBayley - must be such a huge relief to have one under her belt! DD has only just started with interviews.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 11/01/2022 15:23

@SandyBayley

Thanks *@opoponax* - she got an offer from college she was allocated to for her 2nd interview. She's rather taken with it so alls we'll than ends well Smile
Great news re offer AND college. That's DH's old college and the one DS1 grew up dreaming he'd be going to too... but he got rejected 2 years. Bah!
MidLifeCrisis007 · 11/01/2022 15:28

2 years ago... not 2 years (he reapplied but to a different college... and got rejected from that too!!!).

opoponax · 11/01/2022 15:30

Ah that's good, I do like a happy ending!

KingscoteStaff · 11/01/2022 15:39

So who's counting - is that 2 offers now? Sandy's and... didn't someone get a Dundee offer?

opoponax · 11/01/2022 16:41

Yes there was a Dundee offer towards the end of last year. Another great option. Ninewells is brilliant.

kackle · 11/01/2022 17:11

@SandyBayley

DD got an Oxford offer! Delighted that it's her first one. Is that the first offer on this thread?
huge congratulations @SandyBayley
mumsneedwine · 11/01/2022 17:48

@SandyBayley huge congratulations. So lovely to hear offers coming through. Let's hope more start trickling onto UCAS v v soon.

Onewildandpreciouslife · 11/01/2022 17:53

Congratulations for your DD @SandyBayley!

My DD has just been invited to interview by Nottingham. So pleased for her - she had pretty much given up hope of getting anywhere this year, and we had a long chat this lunchtime about what to do on her gap year.

A little hope goes a long way!

mumsneedwine · 11/01/2022 18:22

@Onewildandpreciouslife congratulations. My DD may well meet her as she's helping with interviews. Good luck !!

Monkey2001 · 11/01/2022 21:17

@Onewildandpreciouslife I know a newly qualified doctor who only got one interview when he applied. It was Nottingham and he got in and had a great time there. Hope your DD is successful too!

Excellent news @Onewildandpreciouslife - I do like Nottingham. Such a nice campus.

bitsbots · 11/01/2022 21:31

Huge congratulations! 🎉@SandyBayley

Phantomfan · 12/01/2022 09:31

Congratulations @SandyBayley. It must be such a relief for your dd to have an offer.

Ive name changed but have contributed on mumsnet before and followed this thread and others.

My dd is Yr12, I noticed that your dd did a summer residential at Oxford. Can I ask was it the 18-24 or the 15 to 17 Medical course? Its quite expensive at £5k was it worth it?Also looking at BMAT courses too, although my Dd has her eyes set on St Andrews or Edinburgh which I know are difficult to get into ( dd is on TSR so she's aware that she needs to really research her choices in order to secure interviews).

Any other advice gladly received and good luck to everyone else.

SandyBayley · 12/01/2022 10:51

@Phantomfan - DD hadn't done any residential courses. She did a one day online BMAT course.

Phantomfan · 12/01/2022 11:16

Im obviously getting everyone confused (does not take much these days fuzzy brain). Will look at the BMAT courses.

Monkey2001 · 12/01/2022 12:59

@Phantomfan St Andrews isn't one of the difficult ones to get into - UCAT cut off lower than Newcastle, I think they require a certain number of 7/As at GCSE and your PS needs to show you have explored medicine. Edinburgh is ridiculously difficult to get an interview unless you are WP.

OP posts:
opoponax · 12/01/2022 13:24

We will need to see how the UCAT pans out for DD, Monkey, but what kind of UCAT would she need with all her other stats perfect? RUK too.

opoponax · 12/01/2022 13:24

Sorry meant for Edinburgh
